TY - CONF A1 - Helmerich, Rosemarie T1 - Wrought iron arch bridge: measurements and materials testing N2 - In 1882, the East-West suburban train viaduct was built through Berlin as part of the public traffic solution in the late 19th Century. Today, the only left over iron arch bridge is a pair of two arches Crossing the Spree river in the middle of Berlin. Before dismantling the former parallel two original pairs of iron arches and rebuilding new arches for the high-speed railway line through Berlin in 1997, BAM was involved in an extensive test program of the heritage iron arch structure. Especially the estimation of accumulated damage in critical details and the verification of the old material properties at early stage was important information to the bridge owners. The testing program included two strain and displacement measurement campaigns, non-destructive testing, materials testing and microscale metallographic analysis of critical details. The measured strain cycles were significant lower in number and size than expected. Most of the cycles were compression stress cycles only. The work was planned in Cooperation with the Berlin consultancy Professor Hilbers that was responsible for the design and calculation of the reconstruction measures. Additionally, after calculation of the possible reuse of the old arches, we compared measured data from strain measurements with the results from calculation. The measured data and the calculated data show a good qualitative correlation. T1 - Durability of CFRP-laminate strengthening N2 - First bridge structures have been strengthened by means of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced-Polymer (CFRP)-laminates extemally glued to the concrete surface in the last two decades. At present there is no Information about the durability of these Systems after having been in Service for more than ten years. The paper presents laboratory tests and case studies with automated non-destructive testing to analyse the current bond condition of extemally bonded CFRP-laminates to concrete structures, strengthened about ten years ago. The paper presents the feasibility and the limitations of ultrasonic inspection of selected areas of CFRP-laminate-strengthened structures co-funded by the German Center of Competence in Civil Engineering (DIBt) in a national project. Areas of interest were the end region of laminates or areas with educated doubts about their bond integrity selected and marked in the inspection records during main inspections. In a feasability study, the functionality of the ultrasonic test for bond evaluation below CFRP-laminates without any surface protection measure, was confirmed by testing a CFRP-laminate strengthened slab with artificial voids in a blind laboratory test with an accuracy of + 1 cm. The accuracy depends on the step width, line interspace and the distance between ultrasonic transducer and receiver. This accuracy suits a measuring grid of 1 cm. The case studies consider flexural strengthening and repair of prestressed concrete structures as well as longitudinal and transverse strengthening of bridge slabs with simple reinforcement. Both alternatives were considered, covered with mineral surface protection layer and without. The measurement results of automated scanned surfaces is presented in color-codes images. In the tested areas with no or thin surface protection the non-destructive inspection did not uncover severe defects or Deterioration processes. None the less, proposals for further research is given, in testing of the acceptable bond defects and in advancing the ultrasonic test including the devlopment of sensors for this application. T1 - Nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring N2 - The European project Smart Management of the Sustainable Human Environment (SmartEN) aims at developing and planning of early proactive measures to reduce the environmental impact of human actions, the influence of climate changes and to protect infrastructure as well as the environment. The work of SmartEN is organised in an initial training network (ITN) of early stage researchers (ESRs) in European universities, research Institutes and in industry. The participation of specialists from different disciplines as structural engineering, structural health monitoring, non-destructive testing, computational techniques and telecommunication allows a cross-themes Cooperation. The Cooperation between young engineers and scientists from different disciplines aims at improving the career perspectives of early stage researchers in both public and private sectors and enables them to create multidisciplinary networks in the field of structural monitoring. The project is structured into four thematic work Programmes: Wireless sensor networks, sensor signal processing, non-destructive evaluation and smart proactive management. Besides an in-depth theme about corrosion mapping with ground penetration radar (GPR) in work Programme 3, BAM is involved in specifying the links between NDE, inspection and SHM in structural engineering, including small and medium span bridges. The Work Programmes considers multidisciplinary tasks besides the PhDs that solve a specific open task in the defects detection. Multidisciplinary tasks to be considered in the field of NDE are the limitation and applicability of methods for the intended use for detection of the most critical parameter considering (1) Implementation of NDE in structural health monitoring, (2) Requirements on non-destructive evaluation, (3) Optimum sensor placement in infrastructure with special focus on small and medium span bridges and (4) Combined Monitoring and inspection Systems. In Smarten Work Programme 3, we studied the contribution of NDE to monitoring from a civil engineering point of view. An example presents NDE requirements from laboratory tests on demonstration specimens for ground penetration radar. With the understanding of the mechanism, a novel method for detecting reinforcement corrosion in concrete with GPR is proposed, together with a series of signal processing toolkits for corrosion visualization and image comparison. The European commission is funding the European Integrated Project Sustainable Bridges to comply with future traffic demands. The main objective of the project is to reliably assess and upgrade the bridge infrastructure for the required increase of axle loads and transport volume. 32 Institutes from 12 countries develop unified procedures for the assessment and improvement of the existing railway bridge stock under the guidance and review of six major European railway companies. Non destructive testing (NDT) is given a high priority. One of the work packages concentrates on the potential of advanced NDT-methods and creates a toolbox with advisable methods for the condition assessment of all types of railway bridges. Although NDT-methods are implemented in the quality assurance process in many industries, their application in the railway infrastructure is not common. Only a few countries have included selected NDT-methods into advanced condition assessment procedures for the management of their bridge stock. This paper describes also current activities to enhance pulse-phase thermography, impulse-radar and acoustic methods. The advanced methods enable infrastructure owners to verify construction plans, to assess structures, repair and strengthening quality or to identify in-service damages. Latest development is an automated scanning system for combined acoustic and electromagnetic measurements. The results are then combined through data fusion techniques to further increase their value for the bridge owners.
