T1 - Einfluss der Temperatur auf das tribologische Verhalten von DLC-Schichten N2 - Diamantähnliche Kohlenstoffschichten (DLC) zeichnen sich durch ein sehr günstiges Reibungs- und Verschleißverhalten aus. Auf vielen Werkzeugen und hochbelasteten Bauteilen ist DLC daher bereits erfolgreich im Einsatz. In naher Zukunft wird die Bedeutung dieser Schichten als Oberflächenschutz in tribologischen Systemen weiter ansteigen. Wie viele Applikationsbeispiele zeigen, ist die Leistungsfähigkeit von DLC als Schicht zur Verringerung von Reibung und Verschleiß zwar groß, weist aber auch Grenzen auf. Vor allem bei höheren Temperaturen (> 300 °C) treten Strukturveränderungen oder sogar Oxidationsvorgänge auf, die auch die tribologischen Eigenschaften der Schichten verschlechtern können. Reibungs- und Verschleißuntersuchungen (Schwingungsverschleiß) von DLC-Schichten wurden im Temperaturbereich von 25 °C bis 250 °C durchgeführt und zeigen ein schnelleres Durchreiben der Schicht bei höheren Temperaturen. Die Lebensdauer der Schichten wird mit zunehmender Prüftemperatur reduziert. Einsatzgrenzen für DLC-Schichten können abgeleitet werden. For this application, two novel tribometers of the same type have been designed using commercially available components for sliding motion at 40 kHz with amplitudes between 2.5 µm and 5 µm. The tribometers are equipped with means to measure amplitude, frequency, power required to keep the samples in motion and load applied. The effective motion between the two contacting bodies is monitored in each of the tribometers. These data are used to evaluate the coefficient of friction. The wear rate was determined after the tests. The set-ups were tested using well-known 100Cr6H (AISI 52100) samples before investigating novel, non-commercial substrates such as AlFeCrTi-alloys and tungsten carbide-based coatings as well as Magnéli-type coatings (Tin-2Cr2O2n-1 and TinO2n-1). This paper presents the principle of the ultra-high frequency tribometers and first tribological quantities of materials and coatings tested up to and above 1011 cycles. Very low wear rates in the range 10-8 mm³/Nm down to 10-10 mm³/Nm were determined under dry oscillation in air. T1 - Wear of carbon nitride coatings under oscillating sliding conditions N2 - An extended study on tribological properties of carbon nitride coatings under oscillating sliding conditions has been carried out. The coatings were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering with graphite target using nitrogen as reactive gas in an argon/nitrogen atmosphere during the deposition process to deposit carbon nitride, CNx. Coating thickness was about 2 µm. A 200–300 nm thick Ti interlayer was used to enhance adhesion. The nitrogen flow during the deposition was varied to control the amount of nitrogen in the coating. Maximum amount of N-content was about 28 at%, achieved at a maximum N2 flow rate. Other deposition parameters were target to substrate distance, substrate temperature during deposition and bias voltage. The results show a large variation of hardness depending mainly on the nitrogen content and bias voltage. Higher bias voltage produced harder coatings as did lower nitrogen content. The tribological properties were tested unlubricated and lubricated by paraffin oil under gross slip fretting conditions at room temperature against alumina as counter material. Most coatings, but not all, showed a more or less pronounced dependence of wear on relative humidity with wear rates from 10-5 to 10-6 mm3/Nm. The best coatings with regard to a low wear rate and the least dependence upon relative humidity were carbon nitride coatings deposited at elevated substrate temperatures up to 350 °C. The wear resistance of these coatings was increased under the most severe conditions by about one order of magnitude. The results are discussed on the basis of a transfer layer formation. The results show clearly that wear is not significantly correlated to the coating hardness which itself is strongly dependant on the nitrogen content. However, under lubricated conditions with paraffin oil, wear rates were generally very low with wear coefficients at about 10-8 mm3/Nm. Part 1: Influence of contact pressure N2 - Different fretting tests of thin steel wires under different conditions (loads, strokes, number of cycles and mean pressures) were performed. The wires used had 0.45 mm in diameter and the material was a cold-drawn eutectoid carbon steel (0.8% C) with a tensile strength over 2800 MPa. The tests were carried out with 90° "crossed cylinders" configuration varying the stroke, normal load and testing time (number of cycles). Afterwards the volumetric wear was obtained using surface profilometry with diamond stylus. With a classical study of the coefficient of wear with respect to the sliding distance, the results show that the wear coefficient increases with normal load and stroke, consequently, for the same sliding distance, the wear produced was higher when the load and/or stroke is increased. In this work, the coefficient of wear is decreasing continuously as the test is running. In order to analyze better the wear behaviour, another method, in which the volumetric wear is compared with respect to the Archard's loading factor, is proposed. As result of this method, two distinctive behaviours were detected; one corresponds to the running-in period with a more aggressive wear behaviour and the second one to the stable steady state period. In all the tests the running-in period was similar with regard to the wear rates but in the stable period the wear rates were increasing with higher loads or strokes. T1 - Influence of counterbody material on wear of ta-C coatings under fretting conditions at elevated temperatures N2 - The high temperature tribological performance of tetrahedral amorphous carbon coatings has been analyzed at elevated temperatures up to 250 °C in air against three different counterbody materials-steel 100Cr6, a-alumina and silicon nitride. The results show that the counterbody material influences the friction and wear behavior and therefore coating life time strongly. This effect is well known for these coatings at room temperature under dry environmental conditions, equivalent to conditions above 100 °C when water molecules desorb from the surface. However, the sharp difference in tribological performance between silicon nitride on the one hand and alumina and steel on the other hand cannot be understood in this context. Analyzing the friction behavior during the running-in phase, it is evident that only alumina and steel form a stable interface with constant low friction and relatively low wear rates. Silicon nitride forms an unstable interface with fluctuating COF and relatively high wear rates due to its own inherent tendency to tribo-oxidation. T1 - Analysis of different strategies to reduce fretting wear in thin steel roping wires N2 - After having checked in a previous study the influence of stroke and normal load in laboratory fretting tests accomplished with thin steel roping wires, in this paper the effect of the contact pressure (test configuration), environmental conditions (relative humidity) and reduction of the friction coefficient (lubricants) on the wear behaviour were analysed. The wires were 0.45 mm in diameter and the material was a cold-drawn eutectoid carbon steel (0.8% C) with a Tensile Strength over 2800 MPa. The tests were performed on an oscillating test rig and the volumetric wear of both specimens of the tribocouple was determined separately from three-dimensional topographies of the wear scars acquired by means of a confocal profiler, and a calculation algorithm developed in using MATLAB®. The strong effect of humidity and lubrication on wear behaviour was proved, whereas a slight effect of contact pressure was derived. The tribometer is equipped with means to measure amplitude, frequency, power required to keep the sample in motion and load applied. The effective motion between the two contacting bodies is monitored. These data are used to evaluate the coefficient of friction. The wear rate was determined after the tests. The set-up was tested using novel, non-commercial substrates such as AlFeCrTi-alloys and tungsten carbide-based coatings as well as Magnéli-type coatings (Tin-2Cr2O2n-1 and TinO2n-1). For the processing of large LIPSS covered surface areas (5 mm × 5 mm), the laser fluence and the spatial spot overlap were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry. The laser-processed surfaces were characterized by optical microscopy (OM), white light interference microscopy (WLIM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Spatial LIPSS periods between 450 and 600 nm were determined. The nanostructured surface regions were tribologically tested under reciprocal sliding conditions against a 10-mm diameter ball of hardened 100Cr6 steel. Paraffin oil and engine oil were used as lubricants for 1000 sliding cycles at 1 Hz with a normal load of 1.0 N. The corresponding wear tracks were analyzed by OM and SEM. In particular cases, the laser-generated nanostructures endured the tribological treatment. Simultaneously, a significant reduction of the friction coefficient and the wear was observed in the laser-irradiated (LIPSS-covered) areas when compared to the non-irradiated surface. The experiments reveal the potential benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications. Teh conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry for the processing of large surface areas covered homogeneously by two different types of LIPSS - either near wavelength or sub-100 nm structures. The tribological performance of the nanostructured surfaces was characterized under reciprocating sliding at 1 Hz against a ball of hardened steel using different lubricants and normal forces. After 1000 cycles the corresponding wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. For specific conditions, the wear was strongly reduced and laser-generated nanostructures endured the tribological treatment. Simultaneously, a significant reduction of the friction coefficient was observed in the laser-irradiated LIPSS-covered areas, indicating the benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications. The spatially Gaussian shaped beam used for the laser processing was transformed via beam shaping into a top hat distribution at the surface of the samples for optimization. Die Präparation der Verschleißpartikel über eine Entnahme und Übertragung einer geringen Schmierstoffmenge mit einer Mikropipette auf eine TEM-Trägerfolie ist mit einem geringen Aufwand möglich. Der präparative Aufwand ist relativ gering. Das benötigte Schmierstoffvolumen beträgt wenige Mikroliter (0,001ml). Die Untersuchung zeigt die geringe geometrische Größe der Verschleißpartikel und bestätigt indirekt die These der Reaktionsschichtbildung mit einer geringen Schichtdicke, die ständig verschleißt und sich stetig neu bildet. The lubricated tribological testing was carried out with fully formulated as well as with non-formulated synthetic base oil. It was possible to analyze individual particles with dimensions as small as about 5–30 nm which are likely the 'primary' wear particles. A majority of the particles, however, are agglomerated and, thus, lead to the formation of larger agglomerates of up to a few micrometers. Chemical analysis led to the conclusion that most of the observed particles generated in formulated oil, especially the larger ones, are composed of the additives of the lubricant oil. In non-formulated base oil, the primary particles are of similar dimensions but contain only iron, chromium and oxygen, but most likely stem from the mating materials. This finding points to the fact that the main wear mechanism under lubricated conditions with fully formulated oil is more like a continuous shearing process rather than a catastrophic failure with the generation of larger primary particles. When the oil is non-formulated, however, several wear mechanisms act simultaneously and the wear rate is increased significantly. Generated larger primary particles are milled down to the nanoscale. When the oil is fully formulated, wear mainly takes places at the additive layer or tribofilm; thus, the steel surface is protected. The objective of this study was to characterize for friction and wear properties under dry reciprocating sliding condition at different experimental conditions. The polymer specimens were made to oscillate against steel cylinder as a counterpart. This kind of contact condition are frequently found in bushes, sliding bearing, electronic parts, seals, etc. The friction and wear behavior of neat PEK and composite was quite different at room temperature and elevated temperature. It was observed that glass fiber reinforcement is beneficial in controlling the wear of PEK matrix at room temperature than at elevated temperature. The test results are discussed by considering the surface properties i.e. material removal and film transfer formation. The alcohol chemical vapor deposition (ACCVD) method was employed to prepare CNFs and the deposition temperatures were 600 and 700 °C, respectively. Prior to the CNF deposition, Ni catalyst was deposited onto the nACo® surface using the magnetron sputtering. The influence of the deposition temperature on the carbon nanofibers structure was investigated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The higher order degree of CNF structure is observed with increasing deposition temperature. Tribological tests were carried out under fretting contact conditions against Al2O3 ball. It is shown that the coefficient of friction (COF) decreases from 1.0 to 1.2 for the clean nACo® surface to 0.2–0.4 for the CNF layers deposited on the nACo® surface. The test method was oscillating sliding with a ball-on-disk arrangement in an SRV machine. Alumina balls were used as counter body. The friction behaviour was determined on-line, and the wear behaviour was determined from calculations on the basis of wear scar dimensions and profilometric measurements. The friction depends on temperature and shows an increase for most materials for increasing temperature; the smallest friction at all temperatures is found for monolithic TiC. The wear behaviour shows different trends for the different materials. In tests against SiC a maximum of wear is found at 500°C, for TiC at 200°C and for TiB2 at 750°C. By stitching AFM images acquired over the wear scar, the detailed structure of the scar can be characterized even when the scar is much wider than the typical maximum scan range of the AFM (50–100 µm). The results obtained by AFM are compared with those yielded by white light interferometry (WLI). The comparison validates the WLI measurements; at the same time, it shows decisive differences in the resolutions of these two methods. As a consequence, AFM measurements are necessary whenever a precise characterization of the structure of the scar is required. However, since stitching of AFM images is rather time-consuming, white light interferometry is recommended as a faster method whenever experiments are aimed at just a gross characterization of the scar and the measurement of mean quantities (e.g. the wear volume). The experimental conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry for the processing of large surface areas (5 × 5 mm²) covered homogeneously by the nanostructures. The irradiated surface regions were subjected to white light interference microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealing spatial periods around 600 nm. The tribological performance of the nanostructured surface was characterized by reciprocal sliding against a ball of hardened steel in paraffin oil and in commercial engine oil as lubricants, followed by subsequent inspection of the wear tracks. For specific conditions, on the titanium alloy a significant reduction of the friction coefficient by a factor of more than two was observed on the laser-irradiated (LIPSS-covered) surface when compared to the non-irradiated one, indicating the potential benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications. The material combination was α-alumina as upper specimen and steel 100Cr6 as lower specimen. For each of the contact geometries 5 independent measurements were carried out and evaluated independently. The agreement between the single results of coefficient of friction and the coefficient of system wear as well as between the different groups and conditions are good. Largest scatter of the results were found in the dry air regime where both friction and wear depend strongly on the relative humidity. However, comparison of the absolute values of the coefficient of wear between the ball on disk contact geometry on one side and the 2 crossed cylinder contact geometries on the other side reveals a significant difference in that the ball on disk results are lower by about a factor of two. Part 2: Influence of crossing angle N2 - The wear behaviour of thin steel wires has been analyzed under oscillating sliding conditions in crossed cylinders contact geometry. The focus of this analysis was the influence of the crossing angle between the wires on the wear. The wires used had 0.45 mm in diameter and the material was cold-drawn eutectoid carbon steel (0.8% C) with a tensile strength higher than 2800 MPa. Two different types of tests were carried out, the first one representing the influence of the crossing angle for a constant load and the second one representing the influence of the crossing angle with constant contact pressure. In the first type of tests it was seen that as the contact angle decreases the contact pressure decreases too and hence less energy specific wear resistance is observed. As a consequence less wear is produced, thus increasing the life of the wires. In the second type of tests it was seen that with constant contact pressure but different crossing angles, nearly the same energy specific wear resistance was observed. This points at an identical wear behaviour in both type of tests but with a running-in and a steady state period as two different wear periods. The tests showed that the running in period may play an important role in the overall wear particle generation and hence the wear occurring in the steady state period is rather mild. Im Detail wird für Dental-Implantat-Werkstoffe eine Rangfolge aufgestellt, die vergleichend die Verschleißresistenz unterschiedlicher Ti-basierter Werkstoffe zeigt. Wird durch die Kaubewegung eine mehrachsige Beanspruchung in die Kontaktflächen der Schraubverbindung eingeleitet, kann durch partial slip im Randbereich dieser Kontaktfläche ein Verschleißprozess initiiert werden, der die Lockerung des Implantats begünstigt. Eine gute Verschleißresistenz verhindert oder schiebt die vorzeitige Lockerung hinaus. Um das Werkstoffverhalten in Bezug auf eine vorzeitige Lockerung der Implantatkrone bei geschraubten zweiteiligen Implantaten zu charakterisieren, wurden zylindrische Probekörper unter partial slip Fretting-Bedingungen mit Zyklenzahlen bis n = 200 000 beansprucht. Die Frequenz der aufgebrachten Tangentialkraft betrug 2 Hz, um die Kaubewegung zu simulieren. Die tribologischen Untersuchungen wurden auf einem Eigenbau-Tribometer mit der Kontaktgeometrie „gekreuzte Zylinder“ durchgeführt. Die zylindrischen Proben wurden aus den Werkstoffen Titan Grade 4 und der Ti-Legierung Ti6AI4V gefertigt. Ein Teil dieser Ti-basierten Proben wurde oberflächengehärtet. Die bisher erzielten Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die oberflächenbehandelten Proben dazu neigen, unter der Belastung die Kontaktfläche zu vergrößern. Dabei liegen diesen Befrachtungen AFM-Bilder von realen Oberflächentopografien auf der Mikro-/Nanoskala als Ausgangspunkt für die Simulationen zugrunde. In den Simulationen wird berücksichtigt, dass die Flächen während der Gleitreibung in den Kontaktspitzen elastisch und plastisch verformt werden können. Ebenso wird der Effekt des Einsatzhärtens in die Befrachtungen eingeschlossen. Die Ergebnisse der Computersimulation stellen einen Weg zur Untersuchung der Reibkräfte zu Beginn des EinlaufVorgangs dar, insbesondere dann, wenn sich dabei die wahre Kontaktfläche verändert hat. TiN, TiAlN and AlTiN coatings were prepared by using rotating cathode arc evaporation unit. The roughness of the WC-Co substrate Ra ranged from 0.05 to 0.2 µm and the coating thickness was 2.3 ± 0.2 µm. Part of the samples were subjected to the surface modification by the drag grinding finishing. Geometrical parameters of the surface were evaluated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fretting tests were conducted with 10 mm diameter alumina ball under 2 N load, 100 µm slip distance and the frequency of 10 Hz. It was found that the distribution of macroparticles strongly influences the geometrical parameters of the surface and the number of macroparticles increases with increasing Al content in the coating. In the case of the positive skewness Ssq of the coating surface, the kurtosis Sku provides a statistically significant effect on the COF, namely the COF depends inversely on the kurtosis Sku. The kurtosis value for TiN was the highest among as-deposited coatings, subsequently, the slowest increase rate in the COF was observed for the TiN coating. In the case of unfilled TPU, the wear mechanisms are dominated by particle detachment and roll formation. In principle, TPUG also showed a similar wear mechanism as that of unfilled TPU; in addition, particle pull-out and delamination are also observed. Wear volume of TPUG was significantly higher than that for the unfilled TPU and this is attributed to the different material removal processes taking place in the material during sliding. The polymer spheres as a filler material deteriorated the wear resistance of TPU because of improper adhesion and bonding of filler in the TPU matrix and therefore it contributed to more wear. In case of TPU the friction behaviour was strongly dependant on the temperature and surface roughness of the counter body. The results showed that below the glass transition temperature higher friction values are observed with higher counter body surface roughness. However, above the glass transition temperature, higher friction values are observed with a smoother surface roughness of the counter body. In case of TPUG, the friction behaviour was not significantly dependent on surface roughness of the counter body. Since such failures occurred only occasionally, the problem was not revealed by reciprocating sliding tests which are stressing a much smaller surface area compared to the tests in the hip joint simulator. Another type of failure, pits of 1–2 µm in diameter distributed randomly at the coating surface, was frequently observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and analyzed comprehensively by Focused Ion Beam technique in combination with Transmission Electron Microscopy in one case. Three main phenomena taking place at the very initial stage of wear could be identified: the abrasion of small asperities bulging out of the sample surface, the carving of swallow grooves with depth under 20 nm, and the partial or total closure of cavities present on the surface. This last phenomenon shows that, before the carving of a wear scar, the plastic deformation of particular regions of the sample, i.e. the volume around the cavities, takes place already after few cycles (in this case between 400 and 800) in the initial phase of the sliding test. The aim of this study was to investigate the friction and wear properties of these composites under dry oscillating sliding condition at room temperature (RT) as well as at elevated temperature (120 °C). The polymer specimens were made to oscillate against steel cylinder as a counterpart. The friction and wear properties of PEI and composites were strongly influenced by the temperature. Incorporation of carbon fiber in the PEI matrix has increased the wear rate at RT, while at elevated temperature this trend was opposite. Abrasive action of carbon fibers has severely damaged the counterpart and resulted in accelerated wear of the composite at RT. Solid lubricants filled (PTFE, MoS2, graphite) along with glass fiber is beneficial in improving the friction and wear performance of the PEI composite at RT, whereas at elevated temperature wear performance was deteriorated. Tribological performance of neat PEI and glass fiber composite was similar with each other at RT. Scanning electron micrographs and optical micrographs of the worn polymer specimens and the steel cylinders was used to study the possible wear mechanisms. The present test results were also compared with data available on the reciprocating wear of PEI and composites in the literature and trends have been reported. The laser peak fluence, the spatial spot overlap, and the number of overscans were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry in order to obtain large surface areas (5 mm × 5 mm) covered homogeneously by the LIPSS. The laser-processed regions were characterized by optical microscopy (OM), white light interference microscopy (WLIM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The friction coefficient of the nanostructured surfaces was tested during 1000 cycles under reciprocal sliding conditions (1 Hz, 1.0 N normal load) against a 10-mm diameter ball of hardened 100Cr6 steel, both in paraffin oil and in engine oil used as lubricants. Subsequently, the corresponding wear tracks were qualified by OM, SEM, and energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDX). The results of the tribological tests are discussed and compared to that obtained for near wavelength-sized fs-LIPSS, processed under somewhat different irradiation conditions. Some constraints for a beneficial effect of LIPSS on the tribological performance are provided. The results show, that the wear volumes of the systems increase exponentially with increasing temperature, for alpha-alumina more than for silicon nitride. Two different wear mechanisms seem to have a major influence: First, the abrasive action due to materials hardness and second, the tribo-oxidation when silicon nitride is counter material. Die hohe laterale Auflösung dieser modernen Methoden ermöglicht eine morphologische Charakterisierung der Verschleißpartikel bis in den nm-Bereich. Die hochauflösende Elementanalyse erlaubt eine Interpretation der Zusammensetzung und damit Rückschlüsse auf die Verschleißpartikelbildung. Die tribologischen Untersuchungen sind an einem Modell-Verschleißtribometer nach DIN 51834-2 geschmiert, aber ohne Ölkreislauf, durchgeführt worden. Die Präparation der Verschleißpartikel über eine Entnahme und Übertragung einer geringen Schmierstoffmenge mit einer Mikropipette auf eine TEM-Trägerfolie ist mit einem geringen Aufwand möglich. Der präparative Aufwand ist relativ gering. Das benötigte Schmierstoffvolumen beträgt wenige Mikroliter (0,001 ml). Die Untersuchung zeigt die geringe geometrische Größe der Verschleißpartikel und bestätigt indirekt die These der Reaktionsschichtbildung mit einer geringen Schichtdicke, die ständig verschleißt und sich stetig neu bildet. Die beschriebenen Verschleißprozesse sind in der Modell-Verschleiß-Prüfung mit sehr hohen Pressungen am Versuchsbeginn nachweisbar.
