The most studied ones are sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), but others can corrode metals as well, e.g. acid-producing bacteria or methanogenic archaea (MA). However, these studies were mostly focused on metals related to the petroleum industry but metals for other industries, e.g. dentistry, are also susceptible to corrosion. The inert Titanium (Ti) is often used as an implant material, but it is a base metal. The formation of a passivating oxide layer allows Ti to be corrosion resistant at normal conditions. Nonetheless, scanning electron microscope images on dental implants from patients with acute peri-implantitis showed clear signs of corrosion. Currently, the corrosion mechanism of dental implants is unknown, but many indications suggest that oral microorganisms, including MA (Methanobrevibacter oralis) and SRB (Desulfomicrobium orale), could be involved. To determine if MA or SRB can corrode Ti (pure Ti or Ti-6Al-4V alloy), corrosion rate, methane and sulfide concentrations were analyzed. Electrical potential measurements using in-house developed electrochemical cells indicated a potential change on Ti in the presence of a corrosive MA strain compared to an abiotic control. Microbial composition comparison will be analyzed using samples from dental pockets of 150 infected patients by considering the quality of the implant and 50 healthy people by means of amplicon sequencing. Enrichments and isolation of pure cultures from the dentals samples are also examined for their corrosion behavior. Overall, this is the first study investigating the susceptibility of dental implant material to corrosion using human related MA. Geladene, zelluläre Polypropylen-Folien eignen sich besonders gut als Wandlermaterial aufgrund ihrer, verglichen mit Piezokompositen, hundertfach niedrigeren akustischen Impedanz bei gleichem piezoelektrischem Koeffizienten. Doch das winkel- und frequenzabhängige Verhalten der Wandler ist kaum untersucht und wenig quantifiziert. In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, dass diese Folien eine schichtdickenabhängige Sensitivität zwischen 0.1 mV/Pa und 10 mV/Pa aufwiesen. Ein Maximum in der Sensitivität fand sich nahe ihrer mechanischen Resonanzfrequenz im Ultraschallbereich, aber auch im niederfrequenten Hörschallbereich. Darüber hinaus konnte die Winkelabhängigkeit der Sensitivität charakterisiert werden. Die Analyse konnte dabei zeiteffizient mit einem breitbandig emittierenden, thermoakustischen Wandler umgesetzt werden, sodass pro Winkel eine Messung für die Berechnung der Übertragungsfunktion des Wandlers genügte. Quantifiziert wurden die Ergebnisse durch das einmalige Vermessen des Schallfeldes des Emitters mittels Laser-Doppler-Vibrometrie. Mit den erzielten Ergebnissen wurde zum einen das komplexe Sensitivitätsverhalten der Wandler untersucht, aber auch eine grundlegende Methodik aufgezeigt, wie Wandler quantitativ, multivariat charakterisiert werden können. Winkel- und frequenzaufgelöste Sensitivitäten erlauben zum einen die Analyse der Anwendbarkeit der Wandler für sämtliche Einsatzgebiete, zum anderen stehen so Rückschlüsse über die mechanische Dynamik von Elektretfolien in Aussicht, da deren Sensitivität direkt mit ihrem Elastizitätsmodul skaliert. For that purpose, both Conv. A and Mod. SA were used with same weld heat input at different deposition rates. For assessment of the HAC susceptibility, the externally loaded Implant-test [ ] was used. Both conducted test series with Conv. A and Mod. SA showed similar crack critical stress of about 280 MPa. Below this value, no delayed fracture appeared. The welds with Mod. SA showed higher hydrogen concentrations. The fracture occurred in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) or in the weld metal (WM). But in all specimens, cracks initiated at the notch root of the spiral notch of the implants within the coarse-grained HAZ. However, the test series with Mod. SA showed a significant extension of the time-to-failure of several hours compared to tests carried out with Conv. A, see Fig. 1a. The reason is the deeper weld penetration in case of Mod. SA (Fig. 1b and Fig. 1c), which causes longer diffusion path for hydrogen. The fracture topography of the ruptured implant specimens with Conv. A was typical ductile in specimen center and quasi-cleavage like at the edge of the specimens. When using Mod. SA, the topography changed to primarily quasi-cleavage fracture topography with shares of intergranular fracture and secondary crack appearance. Der wesentliche Wirkmechanismus beruht auf der Beeinflussung des Eigenspannungszustands durch die niedrige Martensitstarttemperatur bereits während des Schweißens. Dadurch werden die Druckeigenspannungen aus der behinderten Volumenausdehnung infolge Phasenumwandlung voll wirksam. Weiter weist die Schweißnaht eine hohe Härte auf, die die Schwingrissbildung verzögern kann, allerdings auch zu einer niedrigen Kerbschlagarbeit führt. Im ersten Teil dieses Beitrages werden grundlegende Untersuchungen zur schweißtechnischen Verarbeitung eines LTT-Zusatzwerkstoffes präsentiert. Dies beinhaltet zunächst die Sicherstellung der Schweißbarkeit sowie die Charakterisierung der Schweißgefüge und deren Härte mit dem Ziel, reproduzierbare Verbindungseigenschaften für die nachfolgende Schwingfestigkeitsprüfung herzustellen. Der zweite Teil des Beitrages beschäftigt sich mit den dazugehörigen Schwingfestigkeitsuntersuchungen an den Stählen S355J2 und S960Q unter Verwendung konventioneller Zusatzwerkstoffe im Vergleich zum LTT-Zusatz. Das verwendete Schweißdetail ist eine Verbindungsschweißung am Stumpfstoß unter Variation der Schweißnahtausführung (DY-Naht und V-Naht). Weitergehend wird eine bauteilähnliche Probe (die Längssteife) untersucht, bei der der LTT-Zusatzwerkstoff als zusätzliche Schweißlage aufgebracht wurde. Neben der Schwingfestigkeit werden die Schweißnähte hinsichtlich der Eigenspannungen, der Eigenspannungsstabilität im Schwingversuch sowie metallografisch charakterisiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass LTT-Zusatzwerkstoffe unter Einhaltung wesentlicher Konstruktionsrichtlinien zu einem deutlichen Anstieg der Schwingfestigkeit führen. T1 - Thermal properties and steel corrosion in light-weight alkali-activated mortars N2 - This study aims at investigating the use of coal fly ash-based alkali activated mortars as passive fire protection system for steel structures. These systems are used to slow down the temperature rise of the steel substrate in case of fire. In addition, the protective system should guarantee the ability to prevent and/or mitigate steel corrosion phenomena. The behavior of a light-weight mortar was compared to that of a normal-weight mortar. Density and porosity were measured to better characterize the physical properties of the mortars. The degree of protection in case of fire was assessed by performing medium-scale fire tests. Acoustic emission measurements were conducted to analyze cracking phenomena during the high temperature exposure. The corrosion process was evaluated using an electrochemical approach in order to monitor the durability of the developed material. Preliminary results show that a 20 mm-thick layer of light-weight mortar is able to protect the steel substrate from reaching the critical temperature of 500 °C for 38 minutes in case of cellulosic fire. In addition, alkali activated mortars provide protection for carbon steel in presence of aggressive environment (i.e. presence of chlorides). The corrosion resistance is strictly related to the physical properties of the developed mortars. T1 - Behaviour of reinforced alkali-activated fly ash mortars under leaching conditions N2 - Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete is one of the major deterioration mechanisms limiting the service life of reinforced concrete structures. While for conventional (Portland cement-based) concretes a great amount of experience exists in this regard, the factors that determine the onset of reinforcement corrosion in alkali-activated materials are incompletely understood yet. One aspect of corrosion protection is leaching and the accompanying changes of the concrete pore solution. In the present study, alkali-activated fly ash mortars with embedded carbon steel rebars were exposed to de-ionised water for periods up to 330 days, and the electrochemical response of the steel (free corrosion potential, polarisation resistance), the alteration of the mortar (ohmic resistance, mechanical strength, pore size distribution) as well as the pore solution composition were monitored. Although substantial alkali leaching was observed, the pH of the pore solution remained at values sufficient to protect the embedded steel from depassivation. The mortar did not exhibit indications of significant deterioration. Thus, the present results suggest that leaching is not critical for protection of steel reinforcement in alkali-activated fly ash mortars and concretes. The use of supplementary cementitious materials such as calcined clays as partial replacement for Portland cement offers a solution to limit this environmental impact. This paper investigates four clays from deposits in central Germany with the aim of obtaining pozzolans for the production of Portland-pozzolana cement. The results obtained show that the calcined clays possess pozzolanic properties, which differ depending on calcination temperature and the relative amounts of Kaolinite and 2:1 clay minerals. This bond is determined by the adhesion between the two materials and by the differential deformations of the mortar and the substrate. In the present contribution, the hygric deformations (shrinkage/expansion) of novel one-part alkali-activated mortars and their bond to concrete substrates are studied. Shrinkage of the mortars was studied at 50 % r.H., while expansion was studied on mortars stored over an open water surface (> 99% r.H.). The bond behaviour was studied by pull-off tests according to DIN EN 1542 and by optical microscopy. The alkali-activated mortars exhibit hygric deformations much lower than the deformations of an established, commercial mortar for sewer maintenance that was tested as reference in parallel with the alkali-activated mortars. The bond behaviour of the alkali-activated mortars depends strongly on their mix-design and curing. Optical microscopy showed that in the mortars with lower bond strength, cracks developed in the mortar during curing. Mortars with appropriate mix-design and curing did not exhibit cracking, and their pull-off strength (up to >3 MPa) conformed to the requirements of relevant standards. The transition of pro-cess industry due to the mounting digitalization of technical devices and their provided data used in chemical plants proceeds. Though, the detailed characteristics and con-sequences for the whole chemical and pharmaceutical industry are still unforeseeable, new potentials arise as well as questions regarding the implementation. As the digitali-zation gains pace fundamental subjects like the standardization of device interfaces or organization of automation systems must be answered. Still, process industry lack of sufficient system and development concepts with commercial advantage from this trend. Compared to traditional batch processes, intensified continuous production allows new and difficult to produce compounds with better product uniformity and reduced con-sumption of raw materials and energy. Flexible (modular) chemical plants can produce various products using the same equipment with short down-times between cam-paigns, and quick introduction of new products to the market. Full automation is a prerequisite to realize such benefits of intensified continuous plants. In continuous flow processes, continuous, automated measurements and closed-loop control of the product quality are required. Consequently, the demand for smart sensors, which can monitor key variables like component concentrations in real-time, is increasing. Low-Field NMR spectroscopy presents itself as such an upcoming smart sensor1,2 (as addressed, e.g., in the CONSENS project3). Systems utilizing such an online NMR analyzer benefits through short development and set-up times when applied to modular production plants starting from a desired chemi-cal reaction3. As an example for such a modular process unit, we present the design and validation of an integrated NMR micro mixer based on computational modelling suited for a desired chemical reaction. This method includes a proper design of a con-tinuous reactor, which is optimized through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the demands of the NMR sensor as well as for the given reaction conditions. The system was validated with a chemical reaction process. Consequently, the demand for powerful Process Analytical Technologies, which can monitor key variables like component concentrations in real-time, is increasing. Low-Field NMR spectroscopy presents itself as such an upcoming smart sensor1,2 (as addressed, e.g., in the CONSENS project3,4). Continuous measurement approaches can usually be differed in On- or In-line which both have advantages and drawbacks. On the one hand On-line measurements are easy to integrate even in existing setups through bypass systems, on the other hand issues like the representativity of the sampling must be considered. In the case of Inline analysis, where the whole fluid stream is analyzed, this issue can be avoided. Nevertheless, homogeneity of the mixture must be assured using NMR spectroscopy. This talk shall give a brief summary of current Online and Inline Low-Field NMR approaches. Furthermore, current research results using a tailor-made flow cell for inline analysis are shown pointing out the working range as well as limitations of these method in combination with NMR spectroscopy.
