Research, application, validation and training is being conducted in a wide approach, in collaboration with partners from all over the world. This presentation gives an overview over some recent research topics and applications. Validation provides the objective proof that the chosen testing method is capable of achieving a certain result. Especially in a field without established standards, validation is a meaningful tool that the client has confidence in a certain method to solve the problem successfully and that his requirements are satisfied. Validation is closely connected with systematic testing which requires testing facilities. BAM provides a large amount of test specimens from small concrete members to large scale parts of bridges. T1 - Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for fast analysis of ingress profiles of ions on concrete N2 - An increasing number of reinforced concrete structures, often components of transportation infrastructure, suffer from deterioration, e. g. freeze-thaw effects or corrosion. De-icing salts, which have beenintensively used in the last decades, may cause pitting corrosion at the reinforcement following the Penetration of chloride ions. The penetration of alkaline ions may also influence the alkali silica reaction (ASR) of highway structures. For the application at building materials a relatively new method, the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), was used to determine element distributions and ingress profiles of ions on concretespecimens. LIBS is a testing method which complements the Standard Chemical methods. It is able to measure directly on an optical accessible surface of a specimen. The time needed for sample preparation and measurement is low. The described setup allows repeatable automated measurements at a high number of specimens. The results presented here, show how the heterogeneity of the material can be qualified and how the errors caused by the sampling procedure can be minimised. A mobile setup is available for on site element analysis. Following the results taken at laboratory samples, concrete samples obtained from parking decks and cores taken at highways are presented. The distribution of the characteristic ions and/or the Ingress characteristic of damaging substances are determined.
