TY - JOUR A1 - Heyn, A. A1 - Meist, M. A1 - Michael, O. A1 - Babutzka, M. A1 - Valet, Svenja A1 - Ebell, Gino T1 - Electrochemical characterization of surfaces of galvanized steels under different exposure conditions using gel electrolytes N2 - The corrosion behavior of galvanized steels and zinc components under atmospheric exposure depends mostly on the corrosion product‐based cover layer formation under the prevailing conditions. The use of agar‐based gel electrolytes makes it possible to use electrochemical methods to obtain a characteristic value from these cover layers that describe their current and future protective capacity. It is shown here that different states of galvanized steel can be distinguished very well under laboratory conditions and that this method is also suitable for use under practical conditions. Based on the characteristic values and assuming future time of wetness, it is very easy to draw up a forecast for the future corrosion rate, which provides plausible values. Offshore energy production – offshore wind and power-to-X – are crucial to achieving climate targets. However, the impact of these offshore constructions – wind turbines and production platforms – on the marine environment remains unclear in many aspects. Potential sources of chemical emissions are corrosion protection systems, remobilization of contaminants from old sediments during construction, the brine of desalination plants and increased shipping for maintenance and transportation. In order to minimize the environmental impact of renewable energies, close monitoring is essential. The goal of this project is the development of a monitoring concept for an offshore power-to-X production platform. In addition to the right choice of materials, special design features that can have an impact on corrosion resistance must also be taken into account to ensure long-lasting corrosion protection. In practice, structural crevice arrangements are unavoidable, and therefore the crevice corrosion resistances of stainless steels are of particular importance. These and other influences are being investigated in this joint project. According to ISO 15630‐3, the time to brittle fracture by constant load under corrosive conditions in thiocyanate test solutions (A or B) at 50°C is measured. In the literature, a high scattering in stress corrosion tests is reported, which questions the integrity of the test procedure. This paper shows the results of studies about the influence of solution composition on hydrogen charging in electrochemical and permeation measurements. Electrochemical experiments show that polished steel surfaces without common drawing layers have more consistent free corrosion currents, polarization resistances, and B‐values in solution A with low scattering compared to the solution B experiments. The influence of temperature at 50°C and an ambient temperature of 22°C was also tested. The objective of ISO 27913 is “to provide specific requirements and recommendations on certain aspects of safe and reliable design, construction and operation of pipelines intended for the large-scale transportation of CO2 that are not already covered in existing pipeline standards such as ISO 13623, ASME B31.8, EN 1594, AS 2885 or other standards. Existing pipeline standards cover many of the issues related to the design and construction of CO2 pipelines; however, there are some CO2 specific issues that are not adequately covered in these standards. The purpose of this document is to cover these issues consistently. Hence, this document is not a standalone standard, but is written to be a supplement to other existing pipeline standards for natural gas or liquids for both onshore and offshore pipelines.” This contribution shall provide information on the content, the current stage of the revision process, encourage to contribute to this standard and make listeners aware to consider the influence of ISO standard on documents currently in draft.
