TY - JOUR A1 - Bettge, Dirk A1 - Starcevic, Jasminka T1 - Quantitative description of wear surfaces of disc brakes using interference microscopy JF - Wear N2 - The technical systems to be investigated are disc brakes and steel–steel rolling contact. The friction processes in a disc brake are rather complex and not yet understood in detail. This is mainly due to the complexity of the brake pad material, which consists of a wide variety of components, and the complexity of the chemical reactions occurring at the wear interface between brake disc and brake pad. Whereas partner projects are studying on the chemistry and the crystallography, we are analyzing the topographic properties of the surfaces involved on the microscopic scale. For this purpose, several methods are known. But besides high lateral resolution, relatively large object fields and height ranges are needed. Interference microscopy was therefore chosen as the main method. This paper deals with its advantages and disadvantages in wear experiments. From this type of test can be derived information useful in guiding the development of tribomaterials and in helping select candidate materials for specific applications. A large variety of tribotesting methods exists, and indeed several are not yet standardised. One of these methods is the oscillating sliding test, where a ball moves in relation to a disc, usually with small strokes. This method is almost non-destructive and can be applied to very small specimens. One of the most important parameters in laboratory tests is the humidity of the surrounding air. Experimental results on the friction and wear characteristics of different ceramics tested against different ball materials at room temperature in oscillating sliding contact are presented here and discussed, taking into account the effects of the test duration, relative humidity, and counterbody material. T1 - Effect of Transcrystallization in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Poly(p/phenylene sulfide) Composites on the Interfacial Shear Strength Investigated with the Single Fiber Pull-Out Test JF - Journal of macromolecular science B N2 - The effect of transcrystallinity in carbon fiber reinforced poly(p-phenylene sulfide (PPS) composites on the apparent shear strength was investigated with the single fiber pull-out test. Transcrystalline zones around the reinforcing fibers do not seem to improve the adhesion level significantly. Neighbor fibers hinder the formation of the transcrystalline zone and a ductile fracture behavior can be observed. However, the apparent strength level is slightly higher for composites containing such reinforcing neighbor fibers compared with single fiber composite samples. During annealing a brittle interface can be formed in the multifiber composite yielding a higher level of the apparent shear strength. Oscillating sliding tests were performed in high vacuum environment in the temperature range between -40°C and +160°C. Results indicate that MoS2 filled PEEK show the best tribological performance in vacuum. Particularly, in the lower temperature range and at higher loads the friction behaviour is improved by the MoS2 content. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A series of MoS2 and combined MoS2/ta-C coatings were prepared by lasercontrolled arc evaporation (Laser-Arc) in order to study the tribological coating behaviour under vacuum and atmospheric conditions. Very low friction coefficients down to 0.005 were measured under high vacuum. By using a ta-C underlayer beneath the MoS2 a increased lifetime up to 5×105 load cycles could be obtained. Also under atmospheric conditions the underlayer had a beneficial effect on coating performance.
