A1 - Kalinka, Gerhard A1 - Hinrichsen, G. T1 - An Avrami-based model for the description of the secondary crystallization of polymers JF - Journal of macromolecular science B N2 - A mathematical model for the description of the overall crystallization of polymers has been developed which separates the pure geometric spreading of the semicrystalline superstructures from the increasing crystallinity inside these entities. The model uses the Avrami theory for the geometric part and a freely optional function for the increasing local crystallinity. The two functions are combined by a mathematical procedure called convolution. The free option of the local crystallinity function enables this model to permit calculation of this function, which is not accessible to direct measurement. Thus with given Avrami parameters and measured values of the time-dependent overall crystallinity, this function of the local crystallinity (secondary crystallization function) can be calculated. The model has been applied to test data produced by computer simulations. T1 - Crystallization behavior of lithium iron phosphate glass powders in different atmospheres JF - Journal of the American ceramic society N2 - Crystallization behavior in different atmospheres (air, Ar, and 7% H2/Ar) of lithium iron phosphate glass (33Li2O–33Fe2O3–1Nb2O5–33P2O5 (LFNP)) powders with different sizes of 2–1000 µm was examined. The crystallization peak temperature (Tp) in Ar and 7% H2/Ar decreased with decreasing the particle size of glass powders, but the value of Tp in air was independent of particle size. The crystallized glass obtained by heating to Tp showed the formation of the α-Li3Fe2(PO4)3 and LiFePO4 crystalline phases. Fe2O3 crystals were formed only in the inside of crystallized glass plates in the heating in air. The crystallization of LiFePO4 was largely enhanced in the particle size of <2 µm during the heating in Ar and 7% H2/Ar atmospheres. The main crystallization mechanism in LFNP glass was found to be surface crystallization. Significant shrinkages were observed for glass compacts (pellets) in the heating in 7% H2/Ar. These results suggest that controlling particle sizes and atmospheres enables the design the morphology of LiFePO4 crystals in LFNP glass. T1 - Effect of Transcrystallization in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Poly(p/phenylene sulfide) Composites on the Interfacial Shear Strength Investigated with the Single Fiber Pull-Out Test JF - Journal of macromolecular science B N2 - The effect of transcrystallinity in carbon fiber reinforced poly(p-phenylene sulfide (PPS) composites on the apparent shear strength was investigated with the single fiber pull-out test. Transcrystalline zones around the reinforcing fibers do not seem to improve the adhesion level significantly. Neighbor fibers hinder the formation of the transcrystalline zone and a ductile fracture behavior can be observed. However, the apparent strength level is slightly higher for composites containing such reinforcing neighbor fibers compared with single fiber composite samples. During annealing a brittle interface can be formed in the multifiber composite yielding a higher level of the apparent shear strength.
