    <title language="eng">CFD-analysis of Sensible Enthalpy Rise Approach to determine the heat release rate of electric-vehicle-scale lithium-ion batteries</title>
This paper analyses the suitability of the Sensible Enthalpy Rise Approach for measuring the heat release rate of electric-vehicle-scale lithium-ion batteries. An apparatus is designed that meets the conditions of an electric-vehicle-scale lithium-ion battery fire by using cement board as wall material. Modifications of the Sensible Enthalpy Rise Methodology are presented due to the high emissivity and inhomogeneous temperature distribution of the apparatus wall material: a power 4 approach for the heat flow from the walls to the ambient air and an alternative determination methodology for the wall temperature. A one factor at a time parameter study is performed with Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations, investigating a new calibration method based on a fit approach compared to common methods, the wall temperature determination, the approach for the ambient heat flow, the calibration power and the volume flow at the outlet. The simulations show, that suitable estimations of the heat release rate are obtained by using the modifications for wall temperature determination and the power 4 approach for the ambient heat flow. The three calibration methods provide suitable constants, if the calibration power in the same order of magnitude as the mean of the heat release rate profile of the test object.

    <title language="eng">Resonance Monitoring of a Horizontal Wind Turbine by Strain-Based Automated Operational Modal Analysis</title>
    <abstract language="eng">A strain-based automated operational modal analysis algorithm is proposed to track the long-term dynamic behavior of a horizontal wind turbine under operational conditions.&#13;
This algorithm is firstly validated by a scaled wind turbine model, and then it is applied to the dynamic strain responses recorded from a 5 MW wind turbine system. We observed variations in the fundamental frequency and 1f, 3f excitation frequencies due to the mass imbalance of the blades and aerodynamic excitation by the tower dam or tower wake. Inspection of the Campbell diagram revealed that the adverse resonance phenomenon and Sommerfeld effect causing excessive vibrations of the wind tower.

    <title language="eng">Impact damage characterization at RC plates with planar tomography and FEM</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Prediction of dynamic effects of reinforced concrete structures under impact loading is a technical challenge. This is a consequence of the great variability of the physical properties resulting from the wide adaptability of reinforced concrete and a consequence of the wide range of impact loading. Experiments and numerical investigations are normally used on a small scale to address the problem. In this paper, impact tests on reinforced conrete plates with the lateral dimensions of 1.5 m x 1.5 m and a thickness of 30 cm are presented. In bending reinforcement, besides the velocity two properties are varied, the diameter and the spatial distribution of the rebars. Experiments are performed at the Otto-Mohr-Laboratory of the Institute of Concrete Structures of the Technische Universit¨at Dresden. Due to the accelerated fall of the impactor the velocity ranges between 20 and 70 m/s. In addition to the measured quantities such as bearing forces, accelerations are also measured at 4 different positions on and under the plate, as well as the deflection at several positions. The measured data are used for the analysis of the damage form and the numerical examinations with the program Ansys Autodyn and the material model after Drucker-Prager.&#13;
Numerical investigations support the tests, with detailed analysis of individual effects. These numerical computations and the planar tomographic investigations were carried out at BAM in Berlin. With the help of planar tomographic evaluation, the damaged structure is&#13;
made visible and compared with the numerical results. Influences of the bending reinforcement are explained on the basis of damage evaluation in the local area and on selected measured values. In addition to the test evaluation, the tomographic and numerical methods are presented.

    <title language="eng">Shape matters: The effect of particle morphology on the fast-charging performance of LiFePO4/C nanoparticle composite electrodes</title>
For the successful use of lithium-ion batteries in automotive applications, reliable availability of high storage capacity and very short recharging times are essential. In order to develop the perfect battery for a certain application, structure–property relationships of each active material must be fully understood. LiFePO4 is of great interest due to its fast-charging capability and high stability regarding its thermal resistance and chemical reactivity. The anisotropic lithium-ion diffusion through the LiFePO4 crystal structure indicates a strong dependence of the electrochemical performance of a nanostructured active material on particle morphology. In this paper, the relationship of the particle morphology and fast-charging capability of LiFePO4/C core/shell nanoparticles in half-cells was studied. For this purpose, a new multistep synthesis strategy was developed. It involves the combination of a solvothermal synthesis followed by an in situ polymer coating and thermal calcination step. Monodisperse rodlike LiFePO4 nanoparticles with comparable elongation along the b-axis (30–50 nm) and a varying aspect ratio c/a (2.4–6.9) were obtained. A strong correlation of the fast-charging capability with the aspect ratio c/a was observed. When using LiFePO4 nanoparticles with the smallest aspect ratio c/a, the best electrochemical performance was received regarding the specific capacity at high C-rates and the cycling stability. A reduction of the aspect ratio c/a by 30% (3.6 to 2.4) was found to enhance the charge capacity at 10 C up to an order of magnitude (7.4–73 mA h·g–1).

    <title language="eng">Improving bio-oil chemical profile of seaweeds through anaerobic fermentation pre-treatment</title>
Biomass pre-treatments for bio-oil quality improvement are mainly based on thermal and chemical methods which are costly and hence reduce the sustainability of pyrolysis-based refineries. In this paper, anaerobic digestion (AD) and dark fermentation (DF) are proposed as alternative ‘green’ pre-treatments to improve this situation. For this purpose, three seaweeds namely Sargassum polycystum, (Phaephyta), Gracilaria tenuistipitata, (Rhodophyta) and Ulva reticulata, (Chlorophyta) with high ash and oxygen contents were pre-treated to improve their composition and structure prior to pyrolysis. The results reveal that both biological pre-treatments affected, positively, the composition and structure of the seaweed biomass with AD pre-treatment reducing N and S contents by 86% and 63%, respectively. DF was more efficient in terms of ash and moisture reduction with 25% and 70%, respectively. In addition, oxygen (O) reduction by 27% was observed after DF which was evidenced by FTIR spectroscopy indicating the reduction of most oxygen-containing functional groups in the biomass. On the other hand, the carbon (C) content increased in DF pre-treated seaweeds up to 42%, almost two times higher relative content than C in the raw seaweed. The changes in the composition of pre-treated seaweeds resulted in changes in their thermal degradation and the volatile profiles produced during pyrolysis. Interestingly, anhydrosugars and furans which account for some 70% (by area) in raw seaweeds markedly declined or become undetectable after DF pre-treatment and correspondingly more acetic acid and hydrocarbons were produced while after AD more aromatics with high toluene content (ca.17%) were generated. The results indicate that biooil with profiles more similar to petroleum-based composition i.e. rich in hydrocarbons and low in anhydrosugars, N and S can be generated by AD and DF pre-treatments and opens up the possibility of these approaches to effect cost reduction in the overall generation of bio-based fuels.

    <title language="eng">Valorization of macroalgae digestate into aromatic rich bio-oil and lipid rich microalgal biomass for enhanced algal biorefinery performance</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The valorization of macroalgae digestate as a secondary resource for high value chemicals and nutrients will promote the sustainability and circularity of anaerobic digestion based biorefinery. In this study, three digestates from A. nodosum C.linum and L. digitata were separated into liquid and solid fractions to investigate the production of high value added chemicals through pyrolysis using Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (Py-GC/MS) while the filtered liquid fractions were tested as an alternative culture media to grow C. sorokiniana under mixotrophic conditions. The digestates showed different thermal degradation and an improvement of bio-oil profiles compared to the starter material. Pyrolyzates from raw macroalgae were characterized by a high anhydrosugar content in contrast to high aromatics observed in the case of their digestates. Toluene, benzofuran and vinylphenol, base chemicals for many industries, represented together 30–37% of the total chemicals produced during pyrolysis of the three macroalgae digestate. On the other hand, C. sorokiniana cultured on digestate-based media showed a higher lipid content with an increase in monounsaturated fatty acids and a lower poly-unsaturated fatty acid content in comparison to microalgae grown in standard tris-acetate-phosphate media. Thus, the acyl composition was shifted in a direction more suitable for biodiesel production by this process. In addition, the increase of Chemical Oxygen Demand and Volatile Fatty Acids concentration in the digestate was found to reduce ammonium toxicity. Finally, 94% of Chemical Oxygen Demand and 83% of ammonium were removed by microalgae from the digestate-based media which will reduce the pollution risk of the biorefinery. Overall, the results indicate that using macroalgae solid digestates can generate improvements in the quality of&#13;
products obtained by pyrolysis and the liquid digestate can positively influence microalgae growth and its products.

    <title language="eng">Towards defining reasonable minimum composition thresholds – Impacts of variable CO2 stream compositions on transport, injection and storage</title>
    <abstract language="eng">To set up recommendations on how to define “reasonable minimum composition thresholds” for CO2 streams to access CO2 pipeline networks, we investigated potential impacts of CO2 streams with different and temporally variable compositions and mass flow rates along the CCS chain. All investigations were based on a generic “CCS cluster scenario” in which CO2 streams captured from a spatial cluster of eleven emitters (seven fossil-fired power plants, two cement plants, one refinery and one steel mill) are collected in a regional pipeline network. The resulting CO2 stream (19.78 Mio t impure CO2 per year) is transported in a trunk line (onshore and offshore) and injected into five generic replicate storage structures (Buntsandstein saline aquifers) offshore. Experimental investigations and modeling of selected impacts revealed beneficial as well as adverse impacts of different impurities and their combinations. Overall, no fundamental technical obstacles for transporting, injecting and storing CO2 streams of the considered variable compositions and mass flow rates were observed. We recommend to define minimum composition thresholds for each specific CCS project through limiting &#13;
i) the overall CO2 content, &#13;
ii) maximum contents of relevant impurities or elements, &#13;
iii) acceptable variability of concentrations of critical impurities, and defining impurity combinations to be avoided.

    <title language="eng">Corrosion testing in a laboratory container: Corrosion testing with artificial seawater and sediment</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Electricity generation by offshore wind turbine generators (WTG) is an important pillar of the energy transition. Corrosion processes on WTGs pose a particular challenge with regard to safe operation over longer periods of time due to the highly corrosive conditions in the offshore area. BAM is therefore conducting research to ensure a safe operation of the turbines over their intended service life to protect people and the environment.&#13;
In a joint research project, different corrosion-relevant areas of a WTG foundation structure were specifically simulated in test basins within a laboratory container. The aim of the work was, on the one hand, the gravimetric and electrochemical determination of corrosion rates in the different areas of an WTG that are relevant for cathodic corrosion protection (CCP): Underwater and sediment zone as well as the transition area between these two zones. Also, targeted tests were carried out under CCP. In addition, investigations regarding calcareous deposition during CCP were carried out on idealized specimens under laboratory conditions to better assess its influence on the protection process. The investigations were carried out in a laboratory container with different basins, which were filled with sand as sediment and artificial seawater according to ISO 15711and connected via a closed water circuit.&#13;
&#13;
The poster at EURCORR 2022 provides an overview of the investigations and the most important results. It will be evaluated, if a simulation of offshore corrosion conditions is possible to a certain extent in an idealized system with artificial seawater and sediment.

    <title language="eng">Harmful effects of lithium-ion battery thermal runaway: scale-up tests from cell to second-life modules</title>
    <abstract language="eng">For a comprehensive safety assessment of stationary lithium-ion-battery applications, it is necessary to better understand the consequences of thermal runaway (TR). In this study, experimental tests comprising twelve TR experiments including four single-cell tests, two cell stack tests and six second-life module tests (2.65 kW h and 6.85 kW h) with an NMC-cathode under similar initial conditions were conducted. The temperature (direct at cells/modules and in near field), mass loss, cell/module voltage, and qualitative vent gas composition (Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and diode laser spectroscopy (DLS) for HF) were measured. The results of the tests showed that the battery TR is accompanied by severe and in some cases violent chemical reactions. In most cases, TR was not accompanied by pregassing of the modules. Jet flames up to a length of 5 m and fragment throwing to distances to more than 30 m were detected. The TR of the tested modules was accompanied by significant mass loss of up to 82%. The maximum HF concentration measured was 76 ppm, whereby the measured HF concentrations in the module tests were not necessarily higher than that in the cell stack tests.&#13;
Subsequently, an explosion of the released vent gas occurred in one of the tests, resulting in the intensification of the negative consequences. According to the evaluation of the gas measurements with regard to toxicity base on the “Acute Exposure Guideline Levels” (AEGL), there is some concern with regards to CO, which may be equally as important to consider as the release of HF.

    <title language="eng">Composition and Explosibility of Gas Emissions from Lithium-Ion Batteries Undergoing Thermal Runaway</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Lithium-based batteries have the potential to undergo thermal runaway (TR), during which mixtures of gases are released. The purpose of this study was to assess the explosibility of the gaseous emission from LIBs of an NMC-based cathode during thermal runaway. In the current project, a series of pouch lithium-based battery cells was exposed to abuse conditions (thermal) to study the total amount of gases released and the composition of the gas mixture. First, the battery cells were placed in a closed vessel, and the pressure and temperature rise inside the vessel were measured. In a second step, the composition of gases was analysed using a Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer.&#13;
We found that the amount of released gases was up to 102 ± 4 L, with a clear dependence on the battery capacity. This study showed that the concentration of gaseous emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), ethane (C2H6), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) increased with higher cell capacity. Of the five studied flammable gases, the maximum concentrations of carbon monoxide (16.85 vol%), methane (7.6 vol%), and ethylene (7.86 vol%) were identified to be within their explosible range. Applying Le Chatelier’s law, a calculated lower explosion limit (LEL) of 7% in volume fraction was obtained for the gas mixture. The upper explosion limit (UEL) of the gas mixture was also found to be 31% in volume. A filter comprising pyrobubbles was used for the removal of the studied gas components released during the thermal abuse. The investigation revealed that the pyrobubbles filter was highly effect in the removal of HCN (up to 94% removal) and CO2 (up to 100% removal). Herein, we report the dependency of the method of thermal runaway trigger on the measured maximum temperature.

    <title language="deu">Wie sicher sind unsere Bauwerke?

    <title language="eng">3D Probabilistic Site Characterization</title>
The aim of the study is to infer the soil stratification from the provided CPT and borehole data. We infer the soil type at any location within the domain of interest from the SBT index Ic (Robertson, 2009). This index can be directly related to the CPT data through an empirical correlation model. In addition, the soil classes contained in the borehole logs can be expressed as bounds on Ic. A log-transformation was applied to Ic, Y = ln(Ic), and Y was modelled by a 3D Random Field, with a fully Bayesian hierarchical Gaussian Process model to explicitly capture uncertainties.

    <title language="eng">Specialties of HAZID-Study for Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicles</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This paper scopes the specialties of a hazard identification study for large and extra-large unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs). A generic node/function structure is derived from different large and extra-large UUV designs, partially own vehicle designs from research projects, and partially from commercial vehicles. For each node, a short overview of its components and the proper function or operations is defined. A set of guide words is used to prompt a hazard discussion for each node, which identifies unwanted functions, resulting in potential hazards and unmitigated consequences. Related to the SafeMASS-Report from DNV, this work concentrates on selected topics of the bridge-related function on voyage, control &amp; monitoring, and abnormal situations. For unmanned vehicles without any person on board, these three topics become more important for underwater vehicles with very limited connectivity or temporary disruptions of communication whereby an operator in a remote-control center could only be provided with rough vehicle or mission states. Therefore, vehicle control, whether in hard- or software, must handle most tasks belonging to the considered functions automatically or autonomously. Hence, the most appropriate reactions of the system to unwanted system&#13;
behavior must be implemented. This HAZID study could, on the one hand, be used as background for such an implementation, and on the other hand, it is used to verify the implemented actions on the risks and hazards.

    <title language="deu">Anwendung von Korrelationen zwischen Sondierergebnissen und dynamischen Bodeneigenschaften</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Die natürliche Variabilität des Bodens bewirkt, dass jegliche in-situ Messung dynamischer Bodenparameter stets nur den Untersuchungsort beschreiben, und jede Verwendung für benachbarte Orte bereits eine Extrapolation ist. Gleichzeitig ist die Ermittlung von Bodeneigenschaften in-situ mit erheblichen Kosten verbunden, insbesondere bei Standorten wie z. B. Offshore-Windparks. Im innerstädtischen Raum sind seismische Messungen wegen der vorhandenen Bebauung und Flächenversiegelungen nur eingeschränkt möglich. Es bietet sich daher an, indirekte Methoden auf Basis von Drucksondierungen anzuwenden, weil diese Untersuchungen inzwischen zum Standardrepertoire selbst bei kleineren Bauvorhaben gehören.&#13;
Der neue nationale Anhang zu DIN EN 1998-1 erlaubt die Anwendung von Korrelationen zwischen Sondierergebnissen und dynamischen Bodeneigenschaften zur Anwendung bei seismischen Standortanalysen. Es werden jedoch keine Hinweise zur Auswahl geeigneter Korrelationen gegeben. Mit ISO/TS 14837-32 liegt ein Standard vor, in dem sogar für sandartigen Boden und tonartigen Boden zwei konkrete Korrelationen zur Anwendung vorgeschlagen werden. Dasselbe gilt für den Entwurf des Eurocode 7-2, prEN 1997-2 von 2022.&#13;
Untersuchungen zeigen, dass seismische Verfahren, wenn sie nicht unter Labor-Freifeldbedingungen durchgeführt werden, signifikante Streuungen aufweisen. Sofern statistische Korrelationen eine Streuung aufweisen, die in derselben Größenordnung liegen wie Ergebnisse seismischer Verfahren, können beide Verfahren in Grundsatz alternativ eingesetzt werden. &#13;

    <title language="eng">Study of thermal runaway and gas emissions in NMC lithium-ion batteries: State of Charge Dependence Investigation</title>
Thermal runaway investigations were performed by subjecting single and double NMC pouch cells to thermal abuse condition inside an air-tight reactor vessel with an internal volume of 100 dm³. The study was divided into two series. The findings revealed the thermal runaway-induced explosion in the cells results in a rate of temperature increase greater than 10 K/s. The highest gaseous production was achieved at a range of 90 – 100% SOC and higher battery capacities 0.79 L/Wh (Series 1, 10 Ah cell) and 0.87 L/Wh (Series 2, 32 Ah cell). The investigation showed between 25 m³ and 84 m³ of explosible gas mixture could be released from electric vehicles of nominal useable electrical energy from 32 kWh up to 108 kWh at thermal runaway. It was also found that, the release of these explosible gases could undergo a secondary explosion.

    <title language="eng">Design of offshore jacket support structure for experimental fatigue life evaluation</title>
One crucial metric of interest to wind farm operators is the remaining useful life (RUL) of single components, wind turbines, or even entire wind farms. Occasionally, questions arise regarding how to operate a turbine, even in the presence of manufacturing or design errors, which from a computational design standpoint reduce the remaining lifetime below the intended service life. A typical measure involves adapting the monitoring and inspection plan. Using such a maintenance plan, the author intends to simulate the lifetime of jacket-type structure in a fatigue test. The objective of the experiment is to demostrate that systems like three-dimensional jackets possess redundancies that enable reliable continued operation, despite the reduced fatigue life of individual components due to technical flaws, if an appropriate maintenance concept is in place. This presentation discusses the steps leading to the procedure of the experiment including the design process and the maintenance planning.

    <title language="eng">8-MW wind turbine tower computational shell buckling benchmark - Part 1: An international ‘round-robin’ exercise</title>
    <abstract language="deu">An assessment of the elastic-plastic buckling limit state for multi-strake wind turbine support towers poses a particular challenge for the modern finite element analyst, who must competently navigate numerous modelling choices related to the tug-of-war between meshing and computational cost, the use of solvers that are robust to highly nonlinear behaviour, the potential for multiple near-simultaneously critical failure locations, the complex issue of imperfection sensitivity and finally the interpretation of the data into a safe and economic design.&#13;
This paper reports on an international ‘round-robin’ exercise conducted in 2022 aiming to take stock of the computational shell buckling expertise around the world which attracted 29 submissions. Participants were asked to perform analyses of increasing complexity on a standardised benchmark of an 8-MW multi-strake steel wind turbine support tower segment, from a linear elastic stress analysis to a linear bifurcation analysis to a geometrically and materially nonlinear buckling analysis with imperfections. The results are a showcase of the significant shell buckling expertise now available in both industry and academia.&#13;
This paper is the first of a pair. The second paper presents a detailed reference solution to the benchmark, including an illustration of the Eurocode-compliant calibration of two important imperfection forms.

    <title language="eng">LUKAS’ JACKET: A test structure for model and monitoring based lifetime management of offshore jacket support structures</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The goal of the experiments is to demonstrate that systems like three-dimensional jackets possess redundancies that, despite the reduced fatigue life of individual components, enable reliable operation if an appropriate maintenance concept is in place. In practice, individual potentially faulty components in the structure have been handled conservatively so far. To move away from this approach, methods and strategies in the field of life cycle management that enable economically optimal and reliable operation must be transferred from scientific research to practice. Experiments are the preferred method to establish the proof of concept.&#13;
&#13;
To realistically simulate the operational lifetime of a jacket structure through an experiment, cyclic loads must be applied to the structure to replicate typical fatigue processes. To ensure that the test structure is not a "disposable product" and can undergo multiple test cycles, the experimental concept includes system-level and component-level tests. The latter are conducted on removable joints. These elements at the nodes of the structure have been manufactured in multiple variations, both to potentially contain mentioned flaws and to undergo more load cycles individually than the main structure. Once the removable joint is sufficiently pre-damaged and thus the reduced remaining fatigue life is established, the element is inserted into the overall structure. The defined maintenance strategy is then implemented on the entire system. This strategy consists of structural health monitoring (SHM), inspections, and repairs. At defined intervals, cyclic loading is interrupted to apply dynamic loads. Using the installed monitoring system and coupled operational modal analysis (OMA), the modal parameters of the structure are determined, which can help identify potential system damage. Optimal sensor placement (OSP) can be determined based on a maximum value of information (VoI) across the entire pre-posterior predicted service life. For detailed investigations at the hotspots, inspections are conducted using non-destructive methods, among others. Overall global and local information about the structure's condition is gathered these methods, which are then incorporated into models describing the structure through Bayesian updating. This allows for initial system identification based on different system responses and later updating of the predicted parameters of analytical and numerical models. Utilizing the updated models, decisions regarding maintenance actions, such as further inspections or repairs, are made, which are subject to uncertainties. The probabilistic models enable a reliability- and risk-based maintenance strategy, where, for example, maximum failure rates can act as triggers for maintenance actions. These decisions are relevant for the planned duration of the simulated operational lifetime, as well as for potential lifetime extensions, which are currently of significant importance in practice. Optimizing the maintenance strategy for the operational lifetime of the structures with these methods will lead to a higher utility of the offshore wind farm.&#13;
&#13;
The work associated with the test structure encompasses a variety of topics (including fatigue, damage detection and identification, reliability, Bayesian updating, system identification, SHM, maintenance planning, decisions under uncertainties), which are integrated through corresponding models and methods. All these models have been and are being applied in the numerical accompaniment of the experiments. By applying them to a structure that includes the relevant locations and aspects of real-world structures, both well-functioning and suboptimal parts of the established framework will be revealed.

    <title language="eng">Modeling in support of offshore wind farm end-of-life decision making</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The EU member states have set out ambitious long-term goals for deploying offshore wind energy. The installed offshore wind capacity is set to increase from 14.6 GW in 2021 to around 320 GW in 2050. This signifies the role of offshore wind energy as a major contributor to reaching the EU’s climate and energy goals. To ensure that the defined targets are met, a significant number of new wind farms has to be installed and existing wind farms reaching the end of their planned life need to be reused efficiently. Some of the relevant reuse alternatives are lifetime extension, repowering based on the existing support structures and repowering with new turbines.&#13;
As a basis of the decision-making regarding the reuse of existing offshore wind farm, the expected utility of each relevant option should be determined based on the associated expected rewards, costs and risks. The optimal concept maximizes the utility of the decision-maker and fulfills the existing constraints and requirements. To facilitate such a quantitative decision-making, models and methods have to be developed. In particular, models are required that enable predictions of (a) the condition and performance of the turbines and support structures and (b) the renumeration, costs and consequences of adverse events. These predictions have to consider (a) the governing uncertainties, (b) the available information from the planning, construction, installation and operating phase, (b) potential repair, retrofitting and strengthening schemes and (c) possible monitoring, inspection and maintenance regimes for the future operating phase.&#13;
Over the past years, several models, methods and tools have been developed at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) to support the structural integrity management of offshore wind turbine substructures. These include:&#13;
(a) a prototype for reliability-based, system-wide, adaptive planning of inspections of welded steel structures in offshore wind farms, &#13;
(b) a method for monitoring and risk-informed optimization of inspection and maintenance strategies for jacket structures subject to fatigue, and&#13;
(c) a probabilistic cost model of inspection and maintenance of welded steel structures in offshore wind farms. &#13;
&#13;
This contribution provides an overview on these works and discusses how they can be adapted and extended to support the decision-making regarding lifetime extensions and repowering of offshore wind farms.

This work was presented in the two-day workshop ‘Reliability-based methods in geotechnics’ organized by BAM and DGGT AK 2.15 in cooperation with the DGGT Academy. The presentation provides an overview of the sources of uncertainty in geotechnical analyses. A probabilistic 3D ground model of the cone-tip resistance from CPTs is developed utilizing sparse CPT data from a real offshore wind farm site in the North Sea. The predictive cone tip resistance model is used to derive a design property, such as the friction angle, using geotechnical transformation models. The friction angle profiles are then used to show an example of monopile design under uncertainty.

    <title language="eng">Evaluation of the fatigue resistance of butt‑welded joints in towers of wind turbines - A comparison of experimental studies with small scale and component tests as well as numerical based approaches with local concepts</title>
Wind turbines are exposed to a high number of load cycles during their service lifetime. Therefore, the fatigue strength verification plays an important role in their design. In general, the nominal stress method is used for the fatigue verification of the most common used butt-welded joints. The Eurocode 3 part 1–9 is the current design standard for this field of application. This paper presents recent results of fatigue tests on small-scaled specimens and large components with transverse butt welds to discuss the validity of the FAT-class. Furthermore, results from numerical simulations for the verification with the effective notch stress and the crack propagation approach are used for comparison. Based on the consistency between the numerical results and the fatigue tests, the influence of the seam geometry on the fatigue resistance was investigated. Finally, a prediction of the fatigue strength of butt-welded joints with plate thicknesses up to 80 mm was carried out.

    <title language="eng">Acoustic emission for monitoring of fatigue damage in concrete elements of wind turbine towers</title>
Wind energy has become an important player in the energy transition in Germany. Towers of onshore wind turbines are often designed as hybrid structures: the lower part is made of prestressed concrete whereas the upper part is made of steel tubes. The tall structures are permanently subjected to cyclic loads. A research project of BAM as part of the joint project WinConFat - Structure focusses on the evelopment of techniques to monitor fatigue damage evolution in the concrete part. Results of a previous project show that a combination of ultrasonic and acoustic emission testing can give an indication for critical conditions near the end of the fatigue life of the concrete. In the ongoing project acoustic emission sensors have been installed at the base and at the transition piece between concrete and steel of a hybrid wind turbine tower. Beside of acoustic emission measurement the sensor spacing allows for measuring the concrete ultrasonic velocity along the circumference in both levels. Additional measurements like strain, temperature, inclination, or acceleration allow for comparison of environmental loads and change of acoustic properties of the concrete. The paper focusses on first acoustic measurements recorded since December 2023 in comparison to operating data of the wind turbine.

    <title language="eng">Impact damage characterization at RC plates with planar tomography and FEM</title>
Prediction of dynamic effects of reinforced concrete structures under impact loading is a technical challenge. This is a consequence of the great variability of the physical properties resulting from the wide adaptability of reinforced concrete and a consequence of the wide range of impact loading. Experiments and numerical investigations are normally used on a small scale to address the problem. In this paper, impact tests on reinforced conrete plates with the lateral dimensions of 1.5 m x 1.5 m and a thickness of 30 cm are presented. In bending reinforcement, besides the velocity two properties are varied, the diameter and the spatial distribution of the rebars. Experiments are performed at the Otto-Mohr-Laboratory of the Institute of Concrete Structures of the Technische Universit¨at Dresden. Due to the accelerated fall of the impactor the velocity ranges between 20 and 70 m/s. In addition to the measured quantities such as bearing forces, accelerations are also measured at 4 different positions on and under the plate, as well as the deflection at several positions. The measured data are used for the analysis of the damage form and the numerical examinations with the program Ansys Autodyn and the material model after Drucker-Prager. Numerical investigations support the tests, with detailed analysis of individual effects. These numerical computations and the planar tomographic investigations were carried out at BAM in Berlin. With the help of planar tomographic evaluation, the damaged structure is made visible and compared with the numerical results. Influences of the bending reinforcement are explained on the basis of damage evaluation in the local area and on selected measured values. In addition to the test evaluation, the tomographic and numerical methods are presented.

    <title language="eng">Comparison of resonance and hydraulic testing on large scale fatigue tests of welded tubular joints for offshore wind turbine foundations</title>
Jackets structures as foundations for offshore wind energy converters are efficient solutions. But these structures require the welding of a large number of joints. The design of the Jacket structures is typically driven by fatigue. Therefore, consequently the fatigue strength of the joints is a primary parameter for an optimized design. The present paper investigates if tubular joints produced by manual welding using the current techniques have an improved performance compared to the relevant standards that are applied for the design of the foundations. To investigate this, 4 full-scale tests in geometry representative of a structure were performed, 2 using a resonance method and 2 using a three-point bending method with hydraulic actuators. The results are similar, with cracks initiated early and extending extensively before failure. The results are very close to the current T-curve from DNV RP-C203 applied for tubular joints.

    <title language="eng">Perspectives on Wind and Wave Load Reconstruction from SHM Data for Offshore Wind Turbines</title>
As many wind turbines approach the end of their design lifetime, from a technical point of view, comprehensive fatigue analysis of all critical parts is necessary to decide what comes after – continued operation, repowering, or decommissioning. Typically, it is a two-stage evaluation process consisting of a physical inspection of the structure and an analytical part to compare the design and actually experienced loading conditions. Structural health monitoring helps to reduce the uncertainties in the estimations by providing insight into deviations between the designed and the built structure. Furthermore, it allows the evaluation of the consumed fatigue lifetime by analyzing the strain measurements that mirror the actual structural response to experienced environmental and operational conditions. However, the measurement values are limited to a sparse number of instrumented spots on the structure, and further extrapolation to the non-instrumented (critical) sections is required to perform a complete fatigue assessment. One known approach is the external force reconstruction, which has only scarcely been considered for application in offshore wind turbines. In order to extend the previously developed thrust force reconstruction framework, this work discusses the possibilities and challenges of wind and wave loading reconstruction in offshore wind turbine support structures.

Geotechnical engineers are increasingly concerned with wave propagation problems. Manufacturers of geotechnical analysis software added features for soil dynamic analyses to their products initially devised for static geotechnical analyses. Though, users often lack the experience for conducting such advanced numerical analyses. Working groups 1.4 "Soil dynamics" and 1.6 "Numerical analyses in geotechnical engineering" of DGGT German Society for Geotechnical Engineering established a joint subgroup "Numerical analyses in soil dynamics" to address this shortcoming. The present paper presents the work of the subgroup so far and provides some guidance on conducting numerical analyses in soil dynamics.

    <title language="eng">Detection and monitoring of the fatigue crack growth on welds – Application-oriented use of NDT methods</title>
Early detection of fatigue cracks and accurate measurements of the crack growth play an important role in the maintenance and repair strategies of steel structures exposed to cyclic loads during their service life. Observation of welded connections is especially of high relevance due to their higher susceptibility to fatigue damage. The aim of this contribution was to monitor fatigue crack growth in thick welded specimens during fatigue tests as holistically as possible, by implementing multiple NDT methods simultaneously in order to record the crack initiation and propagation until the final fracture. In addition to well-known methods such as strain gauges, thermography, and ultrasound, the crack luminescence method developed at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), which makes cracks on the surface particularly visible, was also used. For data acquisition, a first data fusion concept was developed and applied in order to synchronize the data of the different methods and to evaluate them to a large extent automatically. The resulting database can ultimately also be used to access, view, and analyze the experimental data for various NDT methods. During the conducted fatigue tests, the simultaneous measurements of the same cracking process enabled a comprehensive comparison of the methods, highlighting their individual strengths and limitations. More importantly, they showed how a synergetic combination of different NDT methods can be beneficial for implementation in large-scale fatigue testing but also in monitoring and inspection programs of in-service structures - such as the support structures of offshore wind turbines.

    <title language="eng">SysPark: a software tool for system-wide adaptive planning of inspections of turbine support structures in offshore wind farms</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Fatigue is one of the main deterioration processes affecting the performance of welded steel support structures of wind turbines in offshore wind farms. In this contribution, we present a probabilistic physics-based fatigue deterioration model of a wind farm that accounts for the stochastic dependence among the fatigue behavior of different hotspots at turbine and wind farm level. The dependence exists because of uncertain common influencing factors such as similar material properties, fabrication qualities and load conditions. These system effects signify that an inspection of one hotspot provides indirect information of the condition of the remaining hotspots and thus enable an optimization of the inspection effort for a wind farm.&#13;
&#13;
The wind farm model consists of two levels: A turbine support structure (level 1 system model) is represented by its fatigue hotspots and their stochastic dependence. The fatigue performance of a hotspot is described by a probabilistic fracture mechanics (FM) fatigue model. The probabilistic model of the parameters of the FM fatigue model is calibrated based on design data and is thus directly linked to the design of the turbine support structures. Dependence among the fatigue performances of different hotspots in a turbine support structure is modeled by introducing correlations between the stochastic parameters of the FM fatigue models. A wind farm (level 2 system model) consists of different turbine support structures (level 1 system models). Additional correlations are introduced at wind farm level to account for the dependence among the fatigue behavior of hotspots belonging to different turbine support structures. The wind farm model enables the computation of (marginal) hotspot fatigue reliabilities, system fatigue reliabilities of individual turbine support structures and the system fatigue reliability of an entire wind farm. The probabilistic model of the parameters of the two-level system model can be consistently updated with inspection outcomes using Bayesian methods. The updated probabilistic model of the model parameters then forms the basis for updating the estimates of the fatigue reliabilities.&#13;
&#13;
We implement the wind farm model in a software tool named SysPark. The tool provides the means for planning inspections at wind farm level using an adaptive reliability-based threshold approach. In this approach, the first inspection campaign is planned in the year before the fatigue failure rates of the hotspots with the lowest fatigue reliabilities exceed a threshold failure rate. Once inspection results become available, the probabilistic model of the parameters of the wind farm model is updated. If repairs are performed, the wind farm model is additionally modified to describe the behavior of the repaired hotspots. The updated and modified model then enables the planning of the next inspection campaign and so on. The software tool is demonstrated in a case study considering a generic wind farm consisting of turbines with jacket support structures.

    <title language="eng">OWEC repowering from a structural engineering and research perspective</title>
A significant number of new wind farms has to be installed and, at the same time, existing wind farms reaching the end of their planned life need to be reused efficiently to ensure that the ambitous goals for deploying offshore wind are met. Some relevant reuse alternatives for offshore wind farms are lifetime extension, repowering utilizing existing substructures and full replacement. In this presentation - starting from experience gained from extending the lifetime of the of the U1 metro viaduct in Berlin - we discuss end-of-life decision making in offshore wind. We focus particularly on issues concerning substructures and highlight existing challenges and opprtunities in research and development.

Drop test towers are structures subjected to very specific dynamic loadings. At the drop test tower at the Test Site Technical Safety (TTS) of BAM routine inspections revealed a decline of structural integrity in form of loss of pretension in bolts of structural steel connections. To get an understanding about the underlying damage mechanisms as well as to assure the structural safety in operation, a multifaceted Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system was planned and installed at the structure with the help of digital models. For planning the monitoring system but especially for supporting the investigation of the damaging process finite element models are deployed. Though, to ensure the capability of the FE model to reproduce the real structural behavior in sufficient accuracy, it needs to be calibrated in respect to measured responses of the structure. The present contribution describes experimental and numerical investigations to identify the structural system of the steel tube lattice tower in preparation of the monitoring campaign. An ambient vibration test allowed the identification of the natural frequencies of several global vibrational modes of the drop test tower. For model updating first a sensitivity analysis is applied to identify the most influencing parameter. In succession a genetic algorithm was applied for optimization in the sense of minimization of the difference between measured and simulated characteristic responses. The updated model is finally validated on the dynamic response of the tower structure to a real drop test induced impact loading. The results showed a good agreement between numerical and experimental results though the robustness of the simulation should be improved by more sophisticated numerical modelling.
