    <title language="eng">Smart geosynthetics for structural health monitoring using fully distributed fiber optic sensors</title>
We report on the development of a complete system for structural health monitaring of large-scale geotechnical structures. The system uses Brillouin frequency domain analysis (BOFDA) for distributed measurement of strain and temperature along glass optical fibers (GOFs) by determining the so-called Brillouin frequency shift (BFS). ln a number of research activities we managed to optimize the BOFDA measurement setup regarding the spatial resolution and the accuracy of the measured quantities. Moreover, we realized a simultaneaus measurement of strain and temperature by using nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers (NZDSFs) with several multiple Brillouin scattering resonances. ln cooperation with our German and ltalian industry partners we finally succeeded in fabricating low-attenuation smart geosynthetics as a sensor component of a fully distributed Brillouin-based fiber optic monitaring system.

    <title language="eng">Distributed POF sensors for structural health monitoring in civil construction applications</title>
In this paper, a cost-efficient distributed fiber optic measurement system based on Rayleigh scattering is presented. The distributed digital incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR) method is developed for detection of significantly large strain in the range from 3 % up to 10 % as required by end users. For this purpose, a vector network analyzer used in the I-OFDR is replaced by a compact and cost-effective digital data acquisition system. This digital emitting/receiving unit enables the recording of the complex transfer function carrying information about the local deformations along the entire sensing fiber.

    <title language="eng">Distributed polymer optical fiber sensors using digital I-OFDR for geotechnical infrastructure health monitoring</title>
We present a distributed polymer optical fiber sensor system for deformation monitoring of geotechnical infrastructure. The sensor system is based on the digital incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR) for the detection of local strain events along a perfluorinated polymer optical fiber (PF-POF) used as a sensing fiber. For the best possible load transfer, the PF-POFs were integrated onto geosynthetics which pose a sensor carrier for the sensing fiber. By using elastic PF-POF instead of a standard glass fiber as a sensing fiber the strain range of geosynthetics-integrated fiber optic sensors could be extended up to 10 % in accordance with the end-user requirements.

    <title language="eng">Temperature-corrected determination of mechanical deformations in geotechnical structures using Brillouin-based fiber optic sensors</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Structural Health Monitoring based on distributed Brillouin measuring techniques has been playing bigger and bigger role for applications in large-scale critical structures over the last decade. &#13;
The Brillouin sensing techniques make use of low-loss single-mode optical fibers as distributed sensors allowing compound strain and temperature profile discrimination along the measured section even over several tens of kilometers. Thereby, the measured Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) features much stronger dependence on the longitudinal strain in the sensor fiber than on the temperature distribution along the fiber optic sensor. By detection of slight structural changes in monitored civil structures, such as dams, pipelines and tunnels, the influence of temperature on the measured BFS cannot be neglected. &#13;
In simple cases of fiber optic sensors embedded deeply enough into earth structures no significant temperature gradients caused by weather conditions such as sunrays could be observed. The temperature contributes here only to the signal offset and the local mechanical deformations arisen due to soil displacement can be read directly from the distribution of the BFS. Also special cable solutions for separate determination of temperature and strain have been tested by us under field conditions. The use of two separate optical fibers for strain and temperature detection limits the spatial resolution and measurement accuracy in the determination of both physical quantities. &#13;
In search of the optimal sensory solution for monitoring of mechanical deformations taking into account the temperature component in the measured signal the use of so called nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers has been investigated in several laboratory tests. Due to different doping concentration in the core new resonance acoustic modes can propagate in such optical fibers which results in multipeak structure in the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS). The appearance of more than one resonance peak in the BGS offers the possibility to realize simultaneous measurement of longitudinal strain and temperature by analysis of applicable BFSs as function of both physical quantities using only one low cost optical fiber.

    <title language="eng">Applications and prospects for distributed sensing using polymer optical fibres</title>
One of the unique advantages of polymer optical fibres (POF) is that they can be used to measure very high strain values up to 100 % and beyond exceeding the strain limits of silica fibre-based sensor principles. In this paper the distributed strain measurement capabilities of POF based on backscatter change evaluation are summarized and distributed backscatter measurement technologies are intro-duced. Application examples in the structural health monitoring (SHM) field are presented: a promising approach is the integration into technical textiles for high-strain measurement in earthwork structures and crack detection in buildings. The potential of POF for future applications in SHM such as distributed relative humidity sensing is discussed.

    <title language="eng">Distributed Brillouin fiber optic sensor system for long-term structural health monitoring</title>
We report on the development of a distributed fiber optical sensor system for structural health monitoring of largc-scale geotechnical and civil infrastructures. The system is based on Brillouin frequency domain analysis (BOFDA) for distributed measurement of strain and temperature along Standard silica optical fibers used as sensors. By additional incorporation of the fiber optic sensors in geosynthetics, two-dimensional sensors can be realized. Such smart geosynthetics can be used for reinforeerneut of geotechnical and masonry structures and the embedded fiber optic sensors can provide information about the condition of the structures and detect the presence of any damages and destructions in real time.

    <title language="eng">Distributed strain measurement with polymer optical fibers integrated into multifunctional geotextiles</title>
Fiber optic sensors based on polymer optical fibers (POF) have the advantage of being very elastic and robust at the same time. Unlike silica fibers, standard PMMA POF fibers can be strained to more than 40% while fully maintaining their light guiding properties. We investigated POF as a distributed strain sensor by analysing the backscatter increase at the strained section using the optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique. This sensing ability together with its high robustness and break-down strain makes POF well-suited for integration into technical textiles for structural health monitoring purposes. Within the European research project POLYTECT (Polyfunctional textiles against natural hazards) technical textiles with integrated POF sensors, among others sensors are being developed for online structural health monitoring of geotechnical structures. Mechanical deformation in slopes, dams, dikes, embankments and retrofitted masonry structures is to be detected before critical damage occurs. In this paper we present the POF strain sensor properties, reactions to disturbing influences as temperature and bends as well as the results of the different model tests we conducted within POLYTECT. We further show the potential of perfluorinated graded-index POF for distributed strain sensing with increased spatial resolution and measurement lengths.

    <title language="eng">Polymer optical fiber sensors for distributed strain measurement and application in structural health monitoring</title>
Polymer optical fiber (POF) sensors have the unique ability to measure high strain distributed along the fiber up to 40% using the optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique. Both, standard PMMA fibers and perfluorinated (PF) graded-index (GI) POF are introduced and evaluated in potential use and applicability. Further, distributed length change measurement based on cross-correlation analysis of the characteristic fiber signature of PF POF is introduced. We conclude the advances in distributed POF strain sensors technology with respect to application in structural health monitoring. Special focus is on the sensor integration into technical textiles for health monitoring of geotechnical structures and masonry structures. Measurement results of sensor-equipped textiles in different model tests are presented, displacement of soil and cracks in retrofitted masonry structures are detected and evaluated.

    <title language="eng">Distributed strain measurement in perfluorinated polymer optical fibres using optical frequency domain reflectometry</title>
We present the latest advances in distributed strain measurement in perfluorinated polymer optical fibres (POFs) using backscatter techniques. Compared to previously introduced poly(methyl methacrylate) POFs, the measurement length can be extended to more than 500 m at improved spatial resolution of a few centimetres. It is shown that strain in a perfluorinated POF can be measured up to 100%. In parallel to these investigations, the incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) technique is introduced to detect strained fibre sections and to measure distributed length change along the fibre with sub-millimetre resolution by applying a cross-correlation algorithm to the backscatter signal. The overall superior performance of the OFDR technique compared to the optical time domain reflectometry in terms of accuracy, dynamic range, spatial resolution and measurement speed is presented. The proposed sensor system is a promising technique for use in structural health monitoring applications where the precise detection of high strain is required.

    <title language="eng">A novel fiber optic technique for quasi-distributed and dynamic measurement of length change and refractive index</title>
We present a novel technique for dynamic and simultaneous measurement of displacement and refractive indices at multiple reflection points in optical fibers. This quasi-distributed sensor is based on the incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR) technique and allows for m-resolution length change measurement and precise refractive index measurement. We show that the dynamic measurement ability and the simple sensor design allows for new applications in the field of structural health monitoring and chemical process control.

A dynamic and quasi-distributed sensor principle for simultaneous measurement of length changes and optical power changes between reflection points in an optical fiber is presented. The technique is based on the incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR). Length change resolutions &lt; 1 µm and measurement repetition rates up to 2 kHz can be achieved using standard single-mode and multi-mode optical fibers. Simultaneous length change and refractive index measurement as well as field test results showing the deformation of a masonry building under seismic load are presented. Promising fields of application for this technique are the structural health monitoring sector and chemical process control.

    <title language="eng">A novel quasi-distributed long-gauge fiber optic strain sensor system for dynamic measurement</title>
We present a novel technique based on incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) to measure length changes quasi-distributed between reflection points in optical fibres. The technique enables length changes to be measured with a resolution better than 1 µm and allows for static and dynamic measurement capabilities up to 2 kHz. We demonstrate that dynamic measurements of multiple fibre sections can be conducted independently from each other with high precision. Due to the precise and dynamic measurement capabilities, the proposed sensor system is expected to open new fields of application, especially in the structural-health-monitoring sector. Possible applications are discussed in the paper.

    <title language="eng">Monitoring of composite pressure vessels using surface applied distributed fiber optic sensors</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In this paper, we report on surface-applied distributed fibre optic sensors for monitoring composite pressure vessels designed for hydrogen storage. Previous reports have revealed that integrating optical fibres within vessel composite structures effectively enables the monitoring of structural behavior throughout their lifetime.&#13;
However, integrating optical fibres during the manufacturing process is complex and time-consuming. Therefore, we aim to simplify this process by attaching the optical fibres to the vessel’s surface. This method is significantly more timeefficient than the integration process and can be applied to any vessel. Our results demonstrate that surface-applied fibre optic sensors can detect and precisely localise damage.&#13;
Additionally, signs of damage can be recognised even before the damage occurs. Predictive maintenance using fibre optic sensors could reduce premature maintenance costs and periodic inspections while increasing safety and extending the vessel’s useful service life. The role of machine learning in predictive maintenance is also discussed.

    <title language="eng">Application of Intensity-Based Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry to Bridge Monitoring</title>
Although distributed fiber sensing techniques have been widely used in structural health monitoring, the measurement results of bridge monitoring, particularly under destructive testing, have rarely been reported. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first report of distributed vibration measurement results, which we obtained during a three-day destructive test on an abolished bridge. A coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) was used to acquire the vibration information while the bridge was being sawed. The obtained signal was analyzed in time and frequency domain. Some characteristics of the sawing-induced vibration were retrieved by the short-time Fourier transform; the vibration exhibited several high frequency components within the measured range up to 20 kHz and all the components appeared in the same time slot. Some unexpected signals were also detected. Thorough analysis showed that they are quite different from the sawing-induced vibration and are believed to originate from internal damage to the bridge (probably the occurrence of cracks).

    <title language="eng">Evaluating distributed fibre optic sensors integrated into thermoplastic composites for structural health monitoring</title>
Strain sensors used for structural health monitoring (SHM) must provide reliable measurement data during their entire service lifetime. To achieve this for fibre optic sensors integrated into composites, the integration of the sensor has to be adapted according to the process conditions. This paper describes the fabrication of thermoplastic composite samples with integrated distributed fibre optic sensors (DFOS) based on copper-nickel and polyimide coated silica optical fibres. The performance of these DFOS as SHM sensors is evaluated in terms of reliability by measurements derived from comparative measurements with resistance strain gauges and from fatigue tests with 10 million load cycles.

    <title language="eng">Structural health monitoring of hydrogen pressure vessels using distributed fiber optic sensing</title>
We report on distributed fiber optic sensing-based monitoring of hydrogen composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) to simultaneously increase the operational lifespan and mitigate maintenance costs. Our approach represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first application of distributed fiber optic sensing for COPV Type IV monitoring, where the sensing fibers are attached to the surface, rather than integrated into the composite material. Specifically, we attach an optical fiber of 50 m to the pressure vessel's surface, covering both the cylindrical and dome sections. We note that our fiber optic sensing technique relies on swept wavelength interferometry providing strain information along the entire length of the optical fiber with high spatial resolution even at the millimeter scale. When the vessel is pressurized, the sensing optical fiber shows a linear strain response to pressure at every position along the fiber. After thousands of load cycles, the vessel finally fails with the optical fiber detecting and precisely localizing the damage in the vessel’s blind dome area. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of state-of-the-art signal processing methods and machine learning for advancing predictive maintenance. This could reduce the number of regular inspections, mitigate premature maintenance costs, and simultaneously increase the vessel’s remaining safe service life. We believe that the structural health monitoring of hydrogen pressure vessels with fiber optic sensors can enhance trust in hydrogen technology contributing to the energy transition in the future.

    <title language="eng">Wavelength-scanning distributed acoustic sensing for structural monitoring and seismic applications</title>
We introduce wavelength-scanning coherent optical time domain reflectometry (WS-COTDR) for dynamic vibration sensing along optical fibers. The method is based on spectral shift computation from Rayleigh backscatter spectra. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used for fast and high-resolution strain computation from raw measurement data. The applicability of the method is demonstrated for vibration monitoring of a reinforced concrete bridge. We demonstrate another application example for quasi-static and dynamic measurement of ground deformation and surface wave propagation along a dark fiber in a telecommunication cable.

    <title language="eng">Application of quasi-distributed and dynamic length and power change measurement using optical frequency domain reflectometry</title>
Application results of a dynamic technique for simultaneous measurement of length changes and optical power changes between multiple reflection points in an optical fiber are presented. The technique is based on incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR) and allows for measuring for example length changes and optical power changes quasi-distributed at repetition rates up to 2 kHz. Precise measurement with length change resolutions in the µm-range can be conducted using standard single-mode or multi-mode fibers. Previous results of dynamic refractive index change measurement and the use of polymer optical fibers for high-strain measurement are concluded and possible sources of measurement inaccuracies are discussed. Field test results with sensors installed on a masonry building during a seismic shake test are presented. The versatility and simplicity of this technique makes it potentially interesting for application in the structural health monitoring sector and chemical process control.
