    <title language="eng">Sulfur-containing block polymers from ring-opening copolymerization: coordinative encapsulants for transition metals</title>
Sulfur-containing polymers can coordinate transition metals via sulfur-centered, chemically soft lone pairs, although this typically occurs in a spatially uncontrolled manner. In this study, we employed the controlled ring-opening copolymerization of oxetane with sulfur-containing comonomers to construct a series of amphiphilic block copolymers featuring thioester and thiocarbonate functionalities. These copolymers self-assemble in aqueous solution into aggregates with a sulfur-rich core capable of coordinating transition metals. This behavior could be resolved by employing cryo-transmission electron tomography and then extended to complexes incorporating functional coligands. Our study demonstrates how selective catalysis can be harnessed to produce functional polymers with tunable metal coordination properties, paving the way for an emerging class of sulfur-containing copolymers.

    <title language="eng">Femtosecond laser ablation of indium phosphide in air: dynamical, structural and morphological evolution</title>
The irradiation of single-crystalline indium phosphide (c-InP) by Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser pulses (130 fs, 800 nm) in air is studied by means of in-situ time resolved reflectivity measurements [fs-time-resolved microscopy (100 fs-10 ns) and point probing analysis (ns - µs)] and by complementary ex-situ surface analytical methods (Micro Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Force, and Optical Microscopy). The dynamics of melting, ablation, and optical breakdown as well as structural changes resulting from rapid solidification are investigated in detail. Different laser-induced surface morphologies are characterized and discussed on the basis of recent ablation and optical breakdown models.

    <title language="eng">Time- and space-resolved dynamics of ablation and optical breakdown induced by femtosecond laser pulses in indium phosphide</title>
Femtosecond time-resolved microscopy has been used to analyze the structural transformation dynamics (melting, ablation, and solidification phenomena) induced by single intense 130 fs laser pulses in single-crystalline (100)-indium phosphide wafers in air on a time scale from ~100 fs up to 8 ns. In the ablative regime close to the ablation threshold, transient surface reflectivity patterns are observed by fs microscopy on a ps to ns time scale as a consequence of the complex spatial density structure of the ablating material (dynamic Newton fringes). At higher fluences, exceeding six times the ablation threshold, optical breakdown causes another, more violent ablation regime, which reduces the energy deposition depth along with the time of significant material removal. As a consequence, ablation lasts longer in a ring-shaped region around the region of optical breakdown. This leads to the formation of a crater profile with a central protrusion. In the melting regime below the ablation threshold, the melting dynamics of indium phosphide has been quantified and subsequent superficial amorphization has been observed upon solidification on the ns time scale leading to amorphous layer thicknesses of the order of a few tens of nanometers.

    <title language="eng">Corrosive extracellular polysaccharides of the rock-inhabiting model fungus Knufia petricola</title>
Melanised cell walls and extracellular polymeric matrices protect rock-inhabiting microcolonial fungi from hostile environmental conditions. How extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) perform this protective role was investigated by following development of the model microcolonial black fungus Knufia petricola A95 grown as a sub-aerial biofilm. Extracellular substances were extracted with NaOH/formaldehyde and the structures of two excreted polymers studied by methylation as well as NMR analyses. The main polysaccharide (~ 80%) was pullulan, also known as α-1,4-; α-1,6-glucan, with different degrees of polymerisation. Αlpha-(1,4)-linked-Glcp and α-(1,6)-linked-Glcp were present in the molar ratios of 2:1. A branched galactofuromannan with an α-(1,2)-linked Manp main chain and a β-(1,6)-linked Galf side chain formed a minor fraction (~ 20%). To further understand the roles of EPS in the weathering of minerals and rocks, viscosity along with corrosive properties were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The kinetic viscosity of extracellular K. petricola A95 polysaccharides (≈ 0.97 × 10-6 m2 s-1) ranged from the equivalent of 2% (w/v) to 5% glycerine, and could thus profoundly affect diffusion-dominated processes. The corrosive nature of rock-inhabiting fungal EPS was also demonstrated by its effects on the aluminium coating of the AFM cantilever and the silicon layer below.

    <title language="eng">Towards nanoreliability of CNT-based sensor applications: Investigations of CNT-metal interfaces combining molecular dynamics simulations, advanced in situ experiments and analytics</title>
In this paper we present results of our recent efforts to understand the mechanical interface behaviour of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in metal matrices. We conducted experimental pull-out tests of CNTs embedded in Pd or Au and found Maximum forces in the range 10 - 102 nN. These values are in good agreement with forces obtained from molecular Dynamics simulations taking into account surface functional Groups (SFGs) covalently linked to the CNT material. The dominant failure mode in experiment is a CNT rupture, which can be explained with the presence of SFGs. To qualify the existence of SFGs on our used CNT material, we pursue investigations by means of fluorescence labeling of surface species in combination with Raman imaging. We also report of a tensile test system to perform pull-out tests inside a transmission electron microscope to obtain in situ images of CNT-metal interfaces under mechanical loads at the atomic scale.

    <title language="eng">Influence of the Compatible Solute Ectoine on the Local Water Structure: Implications for the Binding of the Protein G5P to DNA</title>
Microorganisms accumulate molar concentrations of compatible solutes like ectoine to prevent proteins from denaturation. Direct structural or spectroscopic information on the mechanism and about the hydration shell around ectoine are scarce. We combined surface plasmon resonance (SPR), confocal Raman spectroscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the local hydration shell around ectoine and its influence on the binding of a gene-S-protein (G5P) to a single-stranded DNA (dT(25)). Due to the very high hygroscopicity of ectoine, it was possible to analyze the highly stable hydration shell by confocal Raman spectroscopy. Corresponding molecular dynamics simulation results revealed a significant change of the water dielectric constant in the presence of a high molar ectoine concentration as compared to pure water. The SPR data showed that the amount of protein bound to DNA decreases in the presence of ectoine, and hence, the protein-DNA dissociation constant increases in a concentration-dependent manner. Concomitantly, the Raman spectra in terms of the amide I region revealed large changes in the protein secondary structure. Our results indicate that ectoine strongly affects the molecular recognition between the protein and the oligonudeotide, which has important consequences for osmotic regulation mechanisms.

    <title language="eng">Reduced bleaching in organic nanofibers by bilayer polymer/oxide coating</title>
Para-hexaphenylene (p-6P) molecules exhibit a characteristic photoinduced reaction (bleaching) resulting in a decrease in luminescence intensity upon UV light exposure, which could render the technological use of the nanofibers problematic. In order to investigate the photoinduced reaction in nanofibers, optical bleaching experiments have been performed by irradiating both pristine and coated nanofibers with UV light. Oxide coating materials (SiOx and Al2O3) were applied onto p-6P nanofibers. These treatments caused a reduction in the bleaching reaction but in addition, the nanofiber luminescence spectrum was significantly altered. It was observed that some polymer coatings [a statistical copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and 2,2-bis-trifluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole, P(TFE-PDD), and poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA] do not interfere with the luminescence spectrum from the p-6P but are not effective in stopping the bleaching. Bilayer coatings with first a polymer material, which should work as a protection layer to avoid modifications of the p-6P luminescence spectrum, and second an oxide layer used as oxygen blocker were tested and it was found that a particular bilayer polymer/oxide combination results in a significant reduction in bleaching without affecting significantly the emission spectrum from the nanofibers.

    <title language="mul">Nanomaterialien und andere innovative Werkstoffe: anwendungssicher und umweltverträglich</title>
    <title language="eng">Nanomaterials and other advanced materials: application safety and environmental compatibility</title>
    <abstract language="mul">Mit einer langfristigen Forschungsstrategie begleiten die für die Sicherheit von Mensch und Umwelt zuständigen Bundesoberbehörden (Umweltbundesamt, Bundesinstitut für Risikobe-wertung, Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin, Bundesanstalt für Materialfor-schung und -prüfung und Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt) die rasch voranschreiten-de Entwicklung neuer Materialien unter den Gesichtspunkten des Arbeits-, Verbraucher- und Umweltschutzes. Die Strategie steht daher in enger Verbindung zu den öffentlichen Förder-programmen für Nanomaterialien und andere innovative Werkstoffe, z. B. des BMBF („Vom Material zur Innovation“) und der EU („Horizon 2020“).&#13;
Die Forschungsstrategie baut auf den bisherigen Ergebnissen der 2008 begonnenen und 2013 erstmals bilanzierten gemeinsamen Forschungsstrategie der Bundesoberbehörden „Nanotechnologie - Gesundheits- und Umweltrisiken von Nanomaterialien"1 auf und erweitert den Blickwinkel auch auf andere Materialinnovationen, bei denen vergleichbare Risiken für Mensch und Umwelt bestehen oder abgeklärt werden müssen. Darüber hinaus greift sie die Idee „anwendungssichere chemische Produkte“2 aus der Initiative „Neue Qualität der Arbeit“ (INQA) des Bundesministeriums für Arbeit und Soziales (BMAS) und das Konzept der nach-haltigen Chemie3 auf, das vom Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, Bau und Reak-torsicherheit (BMUB) unterstützt wird. Durch eine anwendungssichere und umweltverträgli-che Gestaltung innovativer Materialien und ihrer Folgeprodukte sollen nicht akzeptable Risi-ken für Mensch und Umwelt von Anfang an weitgehend ausgeschlossen werden. Dies kann erreicht werden durch&#13;
1.&#13;
die Verwendung sicherer Materialien ohne Gefahreneigenschaften für Mensch und Umwelt (direkte Anwendungssicherheit) oder&#13;
2.&#13;
eine Produktgestaltung, die über den gesamten Lebenszyklus emissionsarm und umweltverträglich ist (integrierte Anwendungssicherheit) oder&#13;
3.&#13;
eine Unterstützung des Anwenders (product stewardship) durch den Hersteller bei technischen, organisatorischen und persönlichen Schutzmaßnahmen zur sicheren Verwendung und Entsorgung des Produktes (unterstützte Anwendungssicherheit).&#13;
Die Fortschreibung der Forschungsstrategie soll als Bestandteil des Nanoaktionsplans 2020 der Bundesregierung Beiträge der Ressortforschung zu folgenden Schwerpunkten leisten:&#13;
•&#13;
Charakterisierung und Bewertung der Risiken von Materialinnovationen&#13;
•&#13;
Unterstützung von Forschungseinrichtungen und Unternehmen&#13;
•&#13;
Fortschreiben von Rechtsvorschriften und Praxisempfehlungen&#13;

•&#13;
Gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz&#13;

    <title language="eng">Mechanical properties of Boehmite evaluated by Atomic Force Microscopy experiments and Molecular Dynamic Finite Element simulations</title>
Boehmite nanoparticles show great potential in improving mechanical properties of fiber reinforced polymers. In order to predict the properties of nanocomposites, knowledge about the material parameters of the constituent phases, including the boehmite particles, is crucial. In this study, the mechanical behavior of boehmite is investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experiments and Molecular Dynamic Finite Element Method (MDFEM) simulations. Young’s modulus of the perfect crystalline boehmite nanoparticles is derived from numerical AFM simulations. Results of AFM experiments on boehmite nanoparticles deviate significantly. Possible causes are identified by experiments on complementary types of boehmite, that is, geological and hydrothermally synthesized samples, and further simulations of imperfect crystals and combined boehmite/epoxy models. Under certain circumstances, the mechanical behavior of boehmite was found to be dominated by inelastic effects that are discussed in detail in the present work.The studies are substantiated with accompanying X-ray diffraction and Raman experiments.

    <title language="eng">Combined influence of ectoine and salt: spectroscopic and numerical evidence for compensating effects of aqueous solutions</title>
Ectoine is an important osmolyte, which allows microorganisms to survive in extreme environmental salinity. The hygroscopic effects of ectoine in pure water can be explained by a strong water binding behavior whereas a study on the effects of ectoine in salty solution is yet missing. We provide Raman spectroscopic evidence that the influence of ectoine and NaCl are opposing and completely independent of each other. The effect can be explained by the formation of strongly hydrogen-bonded water molecules around ectoine which compensate the influence of the salt on the water dynamics. The mechanism is corroborated by first principles calculations and broadens our understanding of zwitterionic osmolytes in aqueous solution. Our findings allow us to provide a possible explanation for the relatively high osmolyte concentrations in halotolerant bacteria.

    <title language="eng">Mechanic and surface properties of central-venous port catheters after removal: A comparison of polyurethane and Silicon rubber materials</title>
Central venous port devices made of two different polymeric materials, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)and silicone rubber (SiR), were compared due their material properties. Both naïve catheters as well as catheters after removal from patients were investigated. In lab experiments the influence of various chemo-therapeutic solutions on material properties was investigated, where as the samples after removal were compared according to the implanted time inpatient. The macroscopic,mechanical performance was assessed with dynamic, specially adapted tests for elasticity. The degradation status of the materials was determined with common tools of polymer characterisation, such as infrared spectroscopy, molecular weight measurements and various methods of thermal analysis. The surface morphology was an alysed using scanning electron microscopy. A correlation between material properties and clinical performance was proposed. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the polyurethane catheter materials can potentially result in increased susceptibility of the catheter to bloodstream infections and thrombotic complications. The higher mechanic failure,especially with increasing implantation time of the silicone catheters is related to the lower mechanical performance compared to the polyurethane material as well as loss of barium sulphate filler particles near the surface of the catheter. This results in preformed microscopic notches, which act as predetermined sites of fracture.

We report a new sequence selective terpolymerisation in which three monomers (butylene oxide (BO) A, PhNCS B and phtalic thioanhydride (PTA) C) are selectively enchained into an (ABA′C)n sequence. PTA/PhNCS/BO ring-opening terpolymerisation ROTERP can be coupled with CS2 ROTERP to generate tetrapolymers and with εDL ROP in switchable catalysis for blockpolymer synthesis.

    <title language="eng">Binderless-cBN as cutting material for ultra-precision machining of stainless steel</title>
The ultra–precision cutting of steel materials is possible but needs modifications of machine tools or the workpiece material. One approach of actual research is the development of cutting materials that gives the opportunity for direct cutting of surfaces with ultra–precision quality. Binderless–cBN is here one of the most promising materials. The paper shows results of experimental studies with binderless–cBN as cutting material while turning stainless steel. Various investigations were carried out to determine the wear mechanisms. Furthermore, measurements are shown regarding the surface quality. The achieved results show the high potential ofbinderless–cBN as cutting material for the machining of steel.

Jan Harloff-Puhr, 17.12.2013</enrichment>

    <title language="eng">Bleaching and coating of organic nanofibers</title>
Based on an analysis of the diffusive heat flow equation, we determine limits on the localization of heating of soft materials and biological tissues by electromagnetically excited nanoparticles. For heating by rf magnetic fields or heating by typical continuous wave lasers, the local temperature rise adjacent to magnetic or metallic nanoparticles is negligible. However, heat dissipation for a large number of nanoparticles dispersed in a macroscopic region of a material or tissue produces a global temperature rise that is orders of magnitude larger than the temperature rise adjacent to a single nanoparticle. One approach for producing a significant local temperature rise on nanometer length scales is heating by high-power pulsed or modulated lasers with low duty cycle.
