    <title language="eng">Safety issues in the hydrogen value chain</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In a public lecture at UNAM JEDS Campus in Ongwediva, students, teachers and professors were introduced to safety issues in the hydrogen value chain, state of safety and open research issues. Existing knowledge gaps, identified by experts from the German Hydrogen Research Network, were presented to motivate the students and responsible persons at UNAM, that the implementation of a master course at the university is reasonable to train skilled workers for the development of a hydrogen infrastructure in Namibia.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Druckgasflaschen im Feuer - Acetylen</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Acetylen ist eines der wichtigsten technischen Gase und findet insbesondere Anwendung zum Schweißen und Schneiden verschiedener Werkstoffe. Damit Acetylen in entsprechenden Mengen vor Ort zur Verfügung gestellt werden kann, wird es in Druckgasbehälter abgefüllt. Diese Acetylendruckgasbehälter nehmen bezüglich ihres inneren Aufbaus eine Sonderstellung unter den Druckgasbehältern ein. Für die bessere Einschätzung von Gefahrensituationen führt die BAM seit vielen Jahren experimentelle Untersuchungen durch, die für die Gewinnung von Entscheidungshilfen bei Unfällen zur Verhütung von Schadensfällen mit Acetylenflaschen dienen. Untersucht wurde z. B. das Berstverhalten von Acetylenflaschen nach Einleitung eines Acetylenzerfalls durch äußere Feuereinwirkung im Freifeldversuch. Die Ergebnisse helfen insbesondere Rettungskräften, Feuerwehren und Entsorgungsfachbetrieben, Risiken besser abschätzen zu können und im Brandfall Sicherheitsabstände und Kühlzeiten zu definieren. In diesem Beitrag werden die umfangreichen Untersuchungsergebnisse vorgestellt, die unter anderem im Rahmen eines Forschungsvorhabens mit dem Britischen Gaseverband (BCGA) erzielt wurden. Die Ergebnisse sind z. B. unmittelbar in die Handlungshilfe für die Fire and Rescue Services in Großbritannien eingeflossen.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Prediction of Explosion Characteristics of Hydrogen Mixtures using Machine Learning Models</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Explosion characteristics of hydrogen mixtures have been extensively investigated at different conditions. Due to the intensiveness of the explosion characteristics experimental determination, empirical and semi-empirical models are commonly used to predict explosion limits in dependance of conditions: temperature, pressure, and mixture composition. However, unevenly distributed, and limited empirical data and the complex non-linear relationship of these explosion characteristics’ present significant challenges to empirical explosion limits prediction methods under various mixture conditions. Moreover, some empirical models and semi-empirical models are not comprehensive and limited in scope of application. To address these issues, the present study adapts a machine learning approach for improving the hydrogen mixtures explosion characteristics prediction at different conditions, offering a fast, flexible, and comprehensive accurate prediction approach. A Multi-Layer Perceptron model was trained, validated, and tested using key input features such as flammability state, initial mixture temperature, inert gas concentration, adiabatic flame temperature, and Lewis numbers. Data augmentation techniques were conducted to supplement and improve the predictive capability of the model. The model’s performance was compared with a separate experimental dataset. This machine learning approach offers a cost-effective and robust alternative to existing empirical explosion limit prediction method, thus also reducing the experimental effort for explosion limits determination.</abstract>

    <abstract language="deu">In den Virtual Talks der DECHEMA wurden allgemeine Aspekte der Sicherheit und Akzeptanz von Wasserstofftechnologien vorgestellt. Wie kann Vertrauen in neue Technologien geschaffen werden, wenn Unfälle aus der Vergangenheit zu Mythen und Märchen führten? Der Vortrag räumt mit allgemeinen Vorurteilen auf und zeigt, dass der Umgang mit Wasserstoff weder unsicherer, noch sicherer ist als der Umgang mit anderen Brenngasen. Basis für den sicheren Umgang mit Wasserstoff ist immer eine Risikoanalyse.</abstract>
    <abstract language="eng">In the DECHEMA Virtual Talks, general aspects of the safety and acceptance of hydrogen technologies were presented. How can trust in new technologies be built when past accidents led to myths and fairy tales? The presentation does away with general prejudices and shows that handling hydrogen is neither more unsafe nor safer than handling other fuel gases. The basis for the safe handling of hydrogen is always a risk analysis.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Trust in Hydrogen Technologies - Safety Issues in the Hydrogen Value Chain</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In June 2020, updated in July 2023, the German government presented the National Hydrogen Strategy (NHS), its first strategy for achieving the goals of its hydrogen policy. The NHS sets out a coherent framework for action for the future production, transportation and use of hydrogen and its derivatives, including the corresponding research, innovations and investments. Various measures have been defined to achieve goals such as the decarbonization of various sectors and the market introduction of hydrogen technologies. This will ultimately lead to the introduction of many “new” technologies in many areas of our daily lives, which will only be successful if decision-makers and the public are convinced that these technologies are safe. Therefore, the safety of hydrogen technologies is an important pillar in gaining and maintaining confidence in these new technologies. Safety must keep pace with, or better still, anticipate trends in technological development in order to avoid overly conservative and expensive safety solutions, and at the same time demonstrate the usability and safety of hydrogen. Otherwise, single incidents – not necessarily explosions – can easily lead to uncertainties and therefore to a decrease in trust and acceptance. The presentation will give an overview of how safety issues are addressed in Germany.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Understanding the science and technology of hydrogen and clean energy projects</title>
    <abstract language="eng">As part of the Global African Hydrogen Summit, participating young people and students in Namibia and Africa learned how science and technological developments are interrelated and influence the development of a hydrogen infrastructure in Namibia. There is a global shortage of skilled workers, particularly in Namibia, who are needed now to build pilot plants and in the future to operate large-scale plants in Namibia. The presentation was intended to motivate the audience to pursue a relevant course of study and thus create prospects for the future.</abstract>

    <abstract language="deu">Im Rahmen des jährlich stattfindenden BAM-UBA-Behörden-Erfahrungsaustauschs wurde vorrangig Mitarbeitenden aus örtlich zuständigen Vollzugs- und Genehmigungsbehörden die in Planung befindliche Nationale Allianz für Wasserstoff-Sicherheit vorgestellt. Die Allianz besteht aus insgesamt acht Institutionen mit einer breit aufgestellten Expertise zur Sicherheit von Wasserstoff und verfolgt das Ziel, die Entwicklung fehlender Methoden und Kriterien zur technischen Sicherheit von Wasserstoff voranzutreiben, Wissenslücken zu identifizieren und diese durch gemeinsame Forschung zu schließen sowie unabhängige und wissenschaftlich fundierte Bewertungen technischer Risiken bei Wasserstoffanwendungen vorzunehmen.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Materialuntersuchung an Pipelinerohren unter Einsatz von Schneidladungen</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Extremprüfung an Pipelinerohren zur dauerhaften Gewährleistung der Sicherheit an Gasfernleitungen: An mehreren Pipelinerohren mit unterschiedlichen Dimensionen (Länge zwischen 8 und 36 m, Außendurchmesser von 400 bis 920 mm) und Wandstärken von 21 bis 38 mm wurden Versuche durchgeführt, bei denen unter Druck Risse in der Wandung durch geeignete Schneidladungen initiiert wurden. Diese Risse breiten sich aufgrund der in den Rohren in Form von Gasdruck gespeicherten Energie aus. In Abhängigkeit von den Materialeigenschaften der Pipelinerohre sowie den Prüfbedingungen von Druck (175 bis 300 bar) und Pipelinetemperatur (Umgebungstemperatur bis -30 °C) wurden die Rissgeschwindigkeiten und –längen bestimmt. Im Anschluss an die Versuche wurden die Rissstücke herausgetrennt, damit weitergehende Materialuntersuchungen (Scherfläche, Gefügestruktur etc.) durchgeführt werden können. Verschiedene Prüfmethoden wie z. B. Battelle Drop Weight Tear Test (BDTWW) oder Charpy Vee-Notched (CVN) liefern zum Teil stark voneinander abweichende Ergebnisse, so dass diese Untersuchungen in Anlehnung an einen West-Jefferson-Tests (WJT) durchgeführt wurden.</abstract>

Netzwerktreffens der Wasserstoffakteure im Landkreis TF und Region kamen auf Einladung der Bürgermeister der Gemeinden Baruth/Mark, Am Mellensee, Ludwigsfelde Akteure und Vertreter aus der Region zusammen, um den Aufbau einer Wasserstoffinfrastruktur zur wirtschaftlichen Förderung der Region zu diskutieren bzw. auch laufende Projekte vorzustellen. Die BAM hat ihre Wasserstoffaktivitäten auf dem BAM Testgelände Technische Sicherheit vorgestellt.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Eine Frage der Technik? Verfahren und Kriterien für den sicheren Betrieb von Wasserstoffanlagen</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Das Webinar wird im Rahmen von TransHyDE Systemanalyse (AP5.3 Akzeptanzbewertungen) durchgeführt und adressiert aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive relevante Aspekte der Sicherheit und öffentlichen Risikowahrnehmung von Wasserstoffprojekten. Dabei erfolgt ein Überblick über Standards der sicherheitstechnischen Forschung, Einblicke aus der Projektkommunikation mit Akteuren und Bürger*innen sowie die Vorstellung aktueller Forschungsergebnisse zur öffentlichen Wahrnehmung der Risiken von Wasserstofftechnologien. Die Diskussion geht den u.a. Fragen nach, welche Rolle das Thema Sicherheit in der aktuellen Planungspraxis spielt, wie transparent über Risiken kommuniziert werden kann, ohne Vertrauen zu gefährden und welche Kommunikationsansätze sich als zielführend zeigen, um gesellschaftlichen Unsicherheiten zu begegnen. Der Vortrag zeigt auf, dass der sichere Betrieb von Anlagen nicht nur mit der Technologie alleine gewährleistet werden kann.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">National Alliance for Hydrogen Safety</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Hydrogen as an energy carrier offers the possibility of establishing a global and local CO2-neutral energy economy. The Hydrogen Clusters4Future bundle already existing expertise in the field of hydrogen technologies in and around Aachen with actors from Industry, Science and Society. All while considering the entire hydrogen life cycle – from production to storage and distribution to use. Safety is also an important issue and independant analysis on a national level is actually not possible in Germany. Other countries like the US and Canada established national safety alliances to offer support to companies and authorities. BAM, together with other independant institutes in Germany started to establish the National Alliance for Hydrogen Safety and presented this alliance to the community of the Hydrogen Clusters4Future.</abstract>
