Application of the inertial navigation system 3D-self-calibration-method for the minimization of the measurement uncertainty For the accuracy of inertial navigation systems for indoor localization it is important to get high quality sensor data of the multi-sensor system. This can be realized using high quality sensors or the developed 3D-self-calibration-method for low cost sensors. Based on the calibration procedure of the accelerometer (ACC) and the magnetic field sensor (MAG), the additional integration of the gyroscope (GYRO) leads to a reduction of the indoor positioning error. This improves both the approximation for the accelerometer, the magnetic field sensor and the gyroscope so that the standard deviation of a single sensor is minimized. There are errors in the whole system. To determine these error sources it is important to define the measurement uncertainty. In this paper it is presented that the measurement uncertainty can be reduced by the application of the developed 3D-self-calibration method. Radio-based multi-sensor system for person tracking and indoor positioning Sensor based person tracking is a challenging topic. The main objective is positioning in areas without GPS connection, i.e. indoors. A research project is carried out at BAM, Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, to develop and to validate a multi-sensor system for 3D localization. It combines body motion sensing and a guard system for the tracking and recording of the status of persons. The so named BodyGuard system was designed for sensor-based monitoring and radio-based transmission of the movement of a person. Algorithms were developed to transform the sensor data into a spatial coordinate. This paper describes how the BodyGuard system operates, which main components were used in the system, how the individual sensor data are converted into 3D motion data, with which algorithms the individual sensors are processed, how individual errors are compensated and how the sensor data are merged into a 3D Model. Final objective of the BodyGuard system is to determine the exact location of a person in a building, e.g. during fire-fighting operations. Development and qualification of FBG-based strain patches and rosettes A fibre Bragg grating (FBG) strain patch specially adapted for long-term and high-strain applications was developed and characterised. Additionally, in the case of unknown main stress axis, two fibre optic strain rosettes were developed. The design concept for the patch and the rosettes is based on a glass fibre reinforced plastic (gfrp) carrier material. The patches were characterised due to their strain gauge factor and fatigue behaviour. As a result, FBG strain patches with linear strain behaviour and excellent fatigue resistance were developed and can be used as part of a monitoring system for aerospace structures or wind turbine power plants. The rosettes were designed to be small in geometrical size and their strain transfer behaviour was characterised. Wireless sensor network with temperature compensated measuring technology for long-term structural health monitoring of buildings and infrastructures Damage to buildings occurs if a construction component fails. The result is a partial or total collapse which can be dangerous for people for example if it's a bridge or a large hall. The collapse of the terminal building at the Airport Charles de Gaulle in Paris and the damage at the historic City Archives of Cologne are typical examples of such accidents. Another problem is the contradiction of the increasing volume of traffic (particularly heavy traffic) and the great age of bridges. The probability increases that the load-bearing capacity of a bridge decreases. For example the collapses of the Mississippi Bridge and of the Inntal Motorway Bridge can be seen as results. Therefore it is necessary to control endangered structures during their life span. In order to prevent these kinds of accidents, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing developed a radio-based, self-configuring measuring system in cooperation with the ScatterWeb Company, Berlin (Germany). This measuring system consists of identically designed sensor modules which are self-sustaining, wireless, act as transmitters and receivers and are equipped with a special sensor technology for long-term monitoring of buildings or engineering facilities. The sensor unit uses strain gauges for stress analysis and contains interfaces for additional sensors. The system in particular applies to buildings and structures for transport and traffic and large-scale industrial facilities, where a subsequent wiring installation is difficult or impossible. The objective is to make a statement about the practicability of a Lamb wave generator (LWG) and about the application relevant parameters (specimen materials and dimensions, wave characteristics, excitation, transmission und reflection). Guided waves enable an effective differentiation of structural and defective indications as well as a classification of different defect types. For the investigations, a LWG was developed which combines the advantages of the single excitation of a piezoelectric actuator and the possibility of a group excitation. Early damage detection of structural defects using guided waves Limited access to the object of relevance is often an essential problem in testing routines, e.g. for non-destructive testing of industry facilities or components of means of transportation. The presented project is about the development of a non-destructive testing method for application over great distances (up to 100 m). The method is based on directed excitation and measuring of Lamb waves (guided waves). It enables an effective differentiation of structural and defective indications as well as a classification of different defect types. The advantage of guided waves is the ability of propagation over great distances. This offers innovative possibilities for the investigation of large or difficult to access constructions. The testing method can be helpful in a broad variety of applications. It is useable for the characterization of plane or cylindrical, thin-walled surfaces of metal or fiber laminated materials. Particularly the investigation of aircraft wings and other aerospace components as well as the investigation of pipelines are addressed fields of application. For this purpose, different magnetostrictive coated fiber optic sensors were developed and various experiments were performed to verify their mode of Operation and to determine the respective reproducibility. The measuring principle is illustrated by obtained experimental results, which showed a change in wavelength from 1 pm at a magnetic field strength change of 0.25 mT. Consequently, this innovative, in-process and non-contact inspection method leads to an increase in quality and reliability of high-performing machine parts, devices and cables. The basic physical concept is based on a magnetostrictive multilayer coating system that strains the high-resolution FBG element. Focusing of ferroelectret air-coupled ultrasound transducers Air-coupled ultrasound has been applied increasingly as a non-destructive testing method for lightweight construction in recent years. It is particularly appropriate for composite materials being used in automotive and aviation industry. Air-coupled ultrasound transducers mostly consist of piezoelectric materials and matching layers. However, their fabrication is challenging and their signal-to-noise ratio often not sufficient for many testing requirements. To enhance the efficiency, air-coupled ultrasound transducers made of cellular polypropylene have been developed. Because of its small density and sound velocity, this piezoelectric ferroelectret matches the small acoustic impedance of air much better than matching layers applied in conventional transducers. In our contribution, we present two different methods of spherical focusing of ferroelectret transducers for the further enhancement of their performance in NDT applications. Measurements on carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) samples and on metal adhesive joints performed with commercially available focused air-coupled ultrasound transducers are compared to measurements executed with self-developed focused ferroelectret transducers. M. Ultrasonic testing of adhesively bonded joints using air-coupled cellular polypropylene transducers In air-coupled ultrasonic testing, the impedance mismatch between the transducer and the air is commonly being solved by adding matching layers to composite transducers. To avoid the difficult technological procedure regarding matching layers, some new piezoelectric materials have been proposed. Most promising are ferroelectrets, which are charged cellular polymers, having ferroelectric and consequently piezoelectric properties. In particular, the extreme softness of cellular polypropylene (cPP) leads to a high piezoelectric constant and to a good impedance match with the air, making matching layers redundant. Its elasticity modulus below 1 MPa causes an additional effect not observed with common piezoelectric materials: that is the electrostrictive effect, here defined as the thickness change due to the attractive force between the transducer electrodes. This effect exceeds the piezoelectric effect at excitation voltages over 1 kV. The extreme softness of cPP leads also to high flexibility, enabling easy focusing by bending the transducer. We have developed air-coupled ultrasonic transducers based on cPP. This includes the electrical matching networks for the transmitter and for the receiver. The transmitter is excited with voltages up to 2.5 kV, so that the electrostrictive effect dominates, leading to sound pressure around 145dB at the transducer surface. These transducers have been applied for testing carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer plates, adhesive joints and other composite structures. Here we report about ultrasonic transmission of two types of adhesive joints. The first one is multi-layer aluminium components with some artificial disbonds, which are common in aerospace industry, and the second one is an aluminium-steel joint with polyurethane adhesive, which is used in automotive industry. Due to this EFPI-sensors were deemed to be unfit for distance determination in comparision with FBG sensors. With the conventional measurement method a continous measurement of the EFPIsensors was necessary. Otherwise data about the distance change was lost. Additional it is necessary to detect the tumaround points in the interference signal with 100%. This made it worse for the analysis and the use of the sensor. At BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing a measurement System called "EFPI-Scan" is developed which can measure the absolute gap distance of four connected EFPI-sensors synchronous. Every measurement channel is temperature independetn and long term stable. Test measurements showed a deviation of maximum ±1 gm per hour. Furthermore it is possible to measure with different measurement modes (abolute, relative and a combination of both). Based on a smart multilayer jacket around the fibre over the physical length of the FBG, magnetic fields generated by rotating machine parts, power generators or power cable can be easily detected, analysed and evaluated. Consequently, this innovative, on-line and non-contact inspection method results in an increase in quality and reliability of high-performing machine parts, devices and cables. The basic physical principle is based on a magnetostrictive multilayer system that strains the high-resolution FBG element in presence of magnetic fields. Subsequently, a fixed relationship between induced magnetic field and wavelength change of the FBG element describes the characteristic sensitivity curve. Intensive tests regarding characterisation of this magnetic field FBG sensor have been carried out and its performance has been evaluated. A contribution to intelligent automatic validation of structure-integrated fibre optic strain sensors Sensors integrated into devices and structures provide essential data to control, optimize or manage machines and structural components. In the last years, processes, applications and machine parts became more and more intelligent. Consequently, the need for sensor validation increased significantly in order to rely on sensor data and measurement results. Structure-integrated fibre optic strain sensors, such as fiber Bragg gratings (FBG), are of special interest in the composite manufacturing industry. This type of sensor makes it possible to gain information and to collect measurement data about entire production processes and whole life-time cycles of composite-made machine parts and structures. However, validation concepts and approaches for this type of sensors are barely reported in literature. Furthermore, all the reported activities have the drawback that the sensor diagnosis strategy is implemented as limited mathematical models and/or complex time-consuming spectral analysis tools which are applied in data post-processing loops. However, to automate sensor validation and to apply real-time and in-field sensor fault detection, it is necessary to acquire measurement data and information about the measurement reliability at the same time. G. Modelling and simulation of a fibre Bragg grating strain sensor based on a magnetostrictive actuator principle A new concept for the self-diagnosis of embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors was developed, simulated and experimentally tested. This concept is based on a magnetostrictive metallic layer directly coated on the fibre cladding over the grating segment of the FBG sensor, so that an on-demand external magnetic field in a millitesla scale can produce a controllable artificial strain as an indication signal for the remote optical interrogator. The relationship between the pre-defined magnetic field and its induced Bragg wavelength shift characterizes this validation concept. Any deviation of the local bonding state of the interfaces from the initial or/and any change of shear strain transferring mechanism from composite matrix to the optical fibre core will result in alterations in this sensitive relationship, and thus triggers an immediate alert for a further inspection. The finite element method is used to simulate the strain of this configuration as result of different values of the magnetic field in order to optimize the geometrical sensor parameters. The simulations are verified by experiments results. © (2016) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only. Air-coupled ultrasonic testing emerged to suit these requirements as it does not require any liquid coupling medium. In conventional air-coupled ultrasonic transducers, matching layers are used in order to decrease the impedance mismatch between transducer and air. Matching layers can be omitted by using ferroelectrets, which are charged cellular polymers having ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. Especially a low Young's modulus, low density and low sound velocity of cellular polypropylene (cPP) are properties being required for well-matched air-coupled ultrasonic transducers. In our contribution we show recent enhancements of cPP transducers resulting in focused sound fields and thus improved lateral sensitivity. The influence of different transmitter apertures was evaluated using measurements of the emitted sound field. In this paper, we propose a scheme for retrieving relevant information to detect steps and to estimate the correct step length from raw inertial measurement unit (IMU) data. This approach uses Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (BLSTM-RNNs). Designed to take contextual information into account, the network can process data gathered from different positions, resulting in a system, which is invariant with respect to transformation and distortions of the input patterns. An experimental evaluation on a dataset produced from 10 individuals demonstrates that this new approach achieves significant improvements over previous attempts and increase the current state-of-the-art results even in the presence of variations and degradations. We achieved a mean classification rate of 98.5% and a standard deviation of 0.70 for 10000 different test sequences and an average error of 1.45% regarding the step length. Thus is the best result on the task gathered in the experiments compared with competing techniques. The FBG strain sensor was jacketed with a magnetostrictive layer based on iron-nickel which, when excited by a specific magnetic field, adds an artificial strain to the sensor. The fixed relationship between magnetic induction and wavelength shift of the FBG strain sensor characterizes the bond strength and adhesion between the sensor and the surrounding structure. Due to an easily applicable magnetic field, it is possible to validate the sensor performance in a non-contact, fast way without disturbing the data-acquisition process. During the last two decades, sensor networks transferred from wired to wireless sensor networks. Several methods exist to measure moisture in building materials. Most of the introduced commercial moisture measurement methods provide information about the local or near surface moisture. A feasibility study is presented to demonstrate, how the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signal, transmitted from the BLE-module embedded in building materials, correlate with changing moisture content. The feasibility of this influence was investigated in the presented study. The maximum and minimum RSSI were systematically recorded and analysed.
