TY - CONF A1 - Königsbauer, Korbinian T1 - Distributed fiber optic sensing as a new approach for comprehensive multi-parameter monitoring of underground hydrogen storage facilities N2 - Hydrogen plays a significant role in the green energy transition and energy independence. Underground hydrogen storage facilities are of great importance for the hydrogen network, as they can store and regulate large quantities of gas. Due to the high explosion risk associated with hydrogen, these facilities need to be closely monitored to avoid any hazardous consequences, such as leaks or explosions. However, it is extremely challenging to perform a comprehensive, seamless and continuous monitoring of the facilities in practice. Distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOSs) are well-suited to address these challenges. The DFG project MUDFOS aims to develop a hybrid DFOS system capable of simultaneously and accurately measuring five key parameters (hydrogen concentration, temperature, strain, humidity, and vibration) that are critical for hydrogen infrastructure over long sensing distances based on Raman-, Rayleigh- and Brillouin-scattering effects.
