Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)are ideal candidates for optical encoding of various materials. Particles with tailor-made emission patterns can be used as anti-counterfeiting markers and luminophores in security inks and to track material flows. Microenvironment-specific changes in the emission properties of the UCNP tags can be used to study, signal, and sense changes of physico-chemical parameters in different environments, e.g., building materials.
