To be able to perform even drop tests with full-scale spent fuel casks BAM operates a large drop test facility capable to handle 200 tons test objects, and to drop them onto a steel plate covered unyielding target with a mass of approximately 2,600 tons. Examples of drop testing of full-scale test models (181 ton CONSTOR V/TC, 127 ton MSF prototype, various cubic containers for radioactive waste) as well as testing of reduced-scale models and component-size tests are briefly presented. The mechanical testing activities at BAM TTS are supported by a open-air drop tower for packages for dangerous goods with load capacity up to 50 tons and by guided impact testing inside a drop test machine up to a object mass of 1,000 kg. Furthermore, the fire test facility at the BAM TTS provides two test stands fired with liquid Propane. Those fire test stands are also designed and operated to meet the requirements of international safety regulations. The thermal test of a thick-walled waste container is shown exemplarily. Within the mechanical package design development assessment not only experimental tests are included, also analytical and numerical examinations like detailed stress calculation of the original cask design by verified FE models are performed by BAM.
