The Development of a normative profile to determine the extent of handedness in children

  • Handedness establishment is decisive in the development of manual skill and occupational performance, and unestablished handedness has been associated with developmental delay. Furthermore, evidence exists that motor and learning problems could occur if a child's handedness is misclassified. The accurate assessment of handedness in preschool children by paediatric occupational therapists is therefore important. However, unestablished handedness has received little attention within the occupational therapy literature, and there is a lack of comprehensive handedness assessments designed to investigate unestablished handedness and related neuromotor behaviours. Exploring handedness-related neuromotor behaviours such as unimanual and bimanual hand use executed in midlin, ipsilateral and contralateral spaces in addition to hand performance, is likely to inform subsequent treatment approachens and render them more effective.
