In order to determine the parameters for different technical solutions for sheet metal forming, the influence of temperature on the forming behaviour of Mg-3Al-1Zn-sheets has been investigated. Forming limit curves were acquired at temperatures between 175 and 240 ºC. The formability of Mg-3Al-1Zn-blanks in conventional and hydro-mechanical deep drawing as well as high pressure sheet metal forming has been evaluated. Apart from common technologies, applying heated blanks and/or dies, more sophisticated forming technologies were tested by means of locally controlled temperature fields. In order to evaluate the formability of magnesium blanks especially by high pressure sheet metal forming, cup drawing experiments were performed by use of several shapes of a punch. A demonstrator geometry, aligned with determined particularities of Mg-3Al-1Zn - sheet metal forming, was chosen. Finally, demonstrator parts were manufactured by hydro-forming. Supplementary forming tests of tailored blanks have been carried out in order to extend the future application area of commercial sheets.
