Abstract This paper aims to discuss gender identity and gender roles issues encountered in the movie Stage Beauty (2004) from a queer theoretical framework. This discussion is carried out by focusing on the experiences of the two main characters in the movie: Ned Kynaston, an actor who is specialized in playing women parts, and Maria, his dresser, who intends to become an actress. We consider the relationship between these two characters with the changes in the law related to women roles in the Brit-ish theater in the xvii century to discuss gender identity and gender roles issues. In order to do that, we present some concepts based on a queer perspective in the first part of the article and then use them to analyze some specific scenes taken from the movie and to present a wider problematic found in Stage Beauty.
The aim of this paper is to achieve a better understanding of the impact of bilingualism on children, considering the dimensions of languages, language use and identity. Since 2009, we have been observing German-Brazilian children in an institutional out-of-home-setting in Bonn, Germany, as a case study. Our main question is: “which role does bilingualism play in constructing children’s identities?” The research techniques are participant observation and informal interviews with families. The results show the need of an updated concept that enables us to understand interactions between languages, cultures and societies. This paper represents a work in progress and is submitted as a contribution to the wider ongoing project of developing the concept of “ Mehrraum ” as an added value space.
