The formability of AZ31-sheet-metal rolled directly from optimised semi-continuously casted feedstock was investigated. Forming limit diagrams and limiting drawing ratios have been evaluated. Flow stress curves were determined using optical deformation analysis system. The influence of surface treatment on friction behavior was investigated in tempered strip drawing test.
Decreasing the weight of the automotive is an actual problem with high ecological and technical importance. When the engagement of the different car producers to force lightweight construction by the use of light metals in the past was still restricted to some aluminium application, the whole automotive industry now is agreed that the car of the future is a multi material design. New HS and UHS steel grades, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and CFK material are in competition to share in the up-coming automotive material concepts. Despite of the outstanding lightweight properties of magnesium sheets their application today is still limited to single prototypes and pre-industrial trials. The reason for this unsatisfying demand lies on the one hand in the current high price of the magnesium sheets and on the other hand in the higher efforts in the material processing needed. The price of the magnesium sheets clearly depends on the volume of customer demands and the related production capacity. The higher the demand and production, the lower the price. Under this consideration an increase of magnesium sheet production seems only possible when the use of sheets isn't restricted to special internal automotive application (which are now already under several investigation). Widespread application, including small parts outside automotive industry as well as large external automotive parts is needed. In the latter case the quality demand of the magnesium sheets is facing additional requirements concerning the higher geometrical and mechanical properties.
