Symmetry of Ground Reaction Forces during the Deadlift Exercise in dependency of different Gripping Techniques

  • Unspecific low back pain (ULBP) is related to symmetry, morphology and strength of the back muscles. For the treatment of ULBP, exercise therapy is the treatment of choice. The deadlift exercise is commonly used in athletes to develop basic strength of the trunk muscles but lately it is also suggested to be used in patients with ULBP. Until now, there is no data available how the different gripping techniques affect symmetry during the deadlift and therefore the safety of this exercise in a rehabilitative or preventive setting. The aim of thisstudy wasto investigate whether different gripping techniques during the deadlift exercise affect the symmetry of the ground reaction forces during the exercise. Sixteen healthy participants were asked to perform a deadlift on a ground reaction force plate three times with three different gripping techniques each time. The different gripping techniques were double pronated (DP), handed supinated (HS) and non‐handed supinated (NHS). The main outcome measurement was the symmetry of the ground reaction forces during the deadlift exercise. Therefore, the maximum side to side differences and the mean side to side differences during the performance of the deadlift were analysed with a repeated measures ANOVA. Post‐hoc testing was done with the Bonferroni‐test. The three different gripping techniques show significant differences between the groups for the maximal differences (F(1.2)=7.523, p=0.01) and the mean differences (F(1.419)= 6.347, p=0.013). Posthoc testing revealed significant differences between DP and HS for the maximum asymmetry (p=0.009) and for mean asymmetry (p=0.035). Between DP and NHS there were significant differencesfor maxiumum asymmetry (p=0.003) and a tendency for differences for mean asymmetry (p=0.051). No significant differences were found between HS and NHS (p>0.05). The results of this study show that the use of different gripping techniques significantly affect the side to side asymmetry during the deadlift. The DP grip results in lower asymmetry the switch grips HS and NHS. Therefore, this study indicates that the DP gripping style should be used in patients with ULBP.show moreshow less
