The list was intended to raise awareness of the different smells in the rural and urban landscape that contribute to the enjoyment of nature, the appreciation of traditional arts and crafts, and food preparation. The research is based on a case study of Jimbocho, a book town in Tokyo known for its numerous shops for different book genres. This paper investigates the impact of the odours present at Jimbocho in contributing to place attachment. Interviews were conducted with bookstore owners to determine the social value of Jimbocho by investigating this heritage site’s role and its smells in shaping identity. The newly established regime therefore launched an ambitious reform course, which was flanked by a strong military component. Military architecture was deployed not only as a powerful means to visualize the new ideas but also as one of the most efficient instruments for realizing the elite’s vision of a modern state. This chapter shows how the new elite attempted to meet the challenges of modernity with hitherto established approaches, before the end of the 1850s signaled the beginning of a new age in military technology and strategy. Ladakh is rich in diverse deposits of clay, earth, and sand, but lacks forested areas or other sources of timber. The particular combination of available resources and an arid, high mountain climate made earthen buildings the only viable architectural basis for this region. More recently, earth has started to become a popular construction material again in many parts of the world, including India and notably Ladakh. This chapter examines this “new tradition” that returns to earth as an appreciated building material. The sense of smell is vital for self-preservation, particularly in detecting potential threats. In the discourse of cultural heritage, the significance of odours is a research topic that is increasingly coming into focus. Odours determine the character of people, spaces, and places, but due to their ephemeral nature, they are more elusive and transitory than any cues or information resulting from vision or touch. Therefore, particular assessment methods, such as so-called smellscapes, will be required to analyse and assess them. Even if the cultural significance of odours is subjective and culturally determined and cannot be inherently charged with significance, their meaning is connected to individual or collective memory and identity. The meaning of odours is explored in places that vary in scale, from private homes to schools, subway stations, and urban quarters, and that can be found in different cities in and outside of Europe. However, conservative right-wing factions within Turkish society view this decision as autocratic and contrary to the will and legacy of Sultan Mehmed II, who conquered Istanbul in 1453 and transformed the building from a church into a mosque. In July 2020, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the current president of Turkey, redesignated Hagia Sophia as a mosque by means of presidential decree. This initiative was seen as a reflection of his uncompromising attitude towards Turkey‘s Byzantine heritage (particularly concerning Hagia Sophia), which finds its roots back in the 1950s and in Erdoğan‘s own political career. Similar to Atatürk‘s 1934 decision, Erdoğan‘s action faced significant criticism for being autocratic, driven by a revanchist impulse, and prioritising his political ambitions. These two decisions were separated by 86 years, during which Turkey experienced radical political and societal changes. Thus, it is essential to contextualise the periods in which these actions were taken and to compare the similarities, differences, and motivations behind them from political, social, and heritage management perspectives. Hagia Sophia, one of Turkey‘s most recognised and culturally significant monuments, has consistently been a focal point of discussion regarding the instrumentalisation of cultural heritage. This article will also examine both presidential decisions through the lenses of heritage instrumentalisation and democratisation, as well as the perceptions of these two leaders in relation to their choices regarding Hagia Sophia. CY - Heidelberg ER - TY - GEN ED - Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra T1 - Visualising significance : mapping as common denominator : proceedings from the 6th International Conference on Heritage Conservation and Site Management N2 - Mapping as a tool and method is foremost employed as a means to analyse and organise information visually. We see maps daily: on television or the internet to see what the weather holds in store for us, on the subway to work, or our cellphones while navigating our way through the streets. Regardless of which objects or events maps record, maps help to filter, organise, and visualise information. However, contemporary maps are still criticised for their hegemonic, Eurocentric representations with their inherent claim for knowledge and, ultimately, legitimisation of power. Maps, with their ability to document heritage and its significance across various scales and objects, are not just tools for interpretation and communication. They also have the potential to challenge political agendas and offer alternative perspectives and narratives. The conference proceedings, which are based on case studies, showcase the diverse range of methodological approaches, data, and actors involved in the mapping process. This diversity underscores the complexity of the field and the many ways in which mapping can be approached and utilised. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the French military government’s management of Germany’s built heritage included both a repressive aspect, with the purging of so-called “belligerent” monuments, and a constructive aspect, with the valorization of heritage as a medium for democratic renewal. The different actions of the French architectural services in heritage matters are examined through a study of characteristic buildings and sites in the city of Koblenz: between the destruction of certain traces of the Nazi past, such as the former Thing theater; the protection of ruins, such as those of the Electoral Palace; and the reinterpretation of a conflicting memory, as in the competition to remodel the famous Deutsches Eck in a spirit of “peace and understanding among nations”.
