TY - GEN A1 - Schimböck, Florian A1 - Seppänen, Jukka T1 - A Descriptive Comparison of Three Virtual Journal Club Formats to Promote Evidence-Based and Intercultural Learning in Nursing Education: A Pilot Study T2 - EDUNOVATIC 2020 : Conference Proceedings, 5th Virtual International Conference on Education, Innovation and ICTDecember 10 - 11, 2020 N2 - Background: Traditional journal club formats based on a presentation session followed by a group discussion are well-known in healthcare education but have many limitations. To overcome some of these, virtual journal club (VJC) formats using the learning management system (LMS) Moodle were developed. Aim: The aim of the study was to offer and compare three VJC formats (via forum, chat and videoconference) for nursing students of two universities in Germany and Finland and to report students’ satisfaction regarding structure, organisation, procedure and intercultural learning. Methodology: In this descriptive pilot study, 44 undergraduate nursing students (german: 16; finnish: 28) participated in three VJCs between December 2019 and January 2020. An online survey was conducted after each VJC to evaluate the VJC format. Results and Discussion: The VJC via videoconference scored best from the students’ point of view. Most of the participants thought that this kind of activity was educationally valuable, an opportunity to learn from other countries, useful in developing the ability to discuss scientifically in an other language and that it improved the individual academic development and training. Conclusion: In summary, the delivery of a VJC using LMS activities was simple, educationally valuable, and well regarded by undergraduate nursing students. A VJC seems a feasible method of delivering a journal club with the potential to foster international collaboration and improve intercultural competencies.
