T1 - A serial SPECT-CT study in a celiac disease patient with cerebellar ataxia and psychiatric symptoms T2 - Neurological sciences N2 - Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated systemic disorder triggered by gluten and related prolamins in genetically predisposed individuals. Here, we described a case of a 31-year-old Caucasian woman who exhibited cerebellar and psychiatric dysfunctions. The patient underwent single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT-CT) before and after a gluten-free diet (GFD). There was an improvement in cerebellar perfusion accompanied by a remission of cerebellar manifestations. The maintenance of the psychiatric manifestations was related to the persistence of the hypoperfusion in the frontal lobes. The patient's psychiatric symptoms did not change after 4 months under a GFD in the hospital. To our knowledge, this is the first case that shows the relationship between improvement in cerebellar perfusion and remission of cerebellar clinical manifestations in a CD patient under a GFD. T1 - Growth, structure, and morphology of ultra-thin tin oxide phases forming on Pt₃Sn(111) single crystals upon exposure to oxygen T2 - Surface science N2 - Here we report an investigation of ultrathin tin oxide films on Pt3Sn(111) using low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM), microspot low-energy electron diffraction (𝜇-LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD), and high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Oxidation at ∼390–410 ◦C produces triangular, two-dimensional oxide islands that nucleate rapidly and exhibit self-limited lateral growth, attributed to limited Sn diffusion from the subsurface of the crystal. 𝜇-LEED shows that the initially formed (4 × 4) Sn oxide is subsequently converted to a more oxygen-rich (2 × 2𝑛) ‘‘stripe’’ phase. At 630 ◦C, enhanced Sn mobility enables a closed (4 × 4) film. The (2 × 2𝑛) phase is shown to consist of a (2 × 2) Sn lattice modulated by 1D stripe defects with spacings of 𝑛 = 4–6 atomic rows; LEED and SXRD measurements show diffraction features corresponding to this striped superstructure. The two oxides can be distinguished in XPS by their O 1s lineshapes: the (4 × 4) phase shows a clear doublet attributable to distinct O species, whereas the (2 × 2𝑛) phase exhibits a broader envelope consistent with a distribution of O coordination environments. The Sn 3d5∕2 spectra are similar for both phases, reflecting closely related Sn bonding motifs. The spectra are consistent with those of previous near-ambient-pressure XPS measurements, suggesting that the surface oxides forming under CO oxidation conditions are similar to those studied here. DC, pulsed I–V characteristics, loadpull and S-parameters of the AlGaN HFET devices were measured before and after irradiation. In parallel, a thick GaN reference layer was also irradiated with the same ions and was characterized by X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, Hall measurements before and after irradiation. Small changes in the device performance were observed after irradiation with carbon and oxygen at a fluence of 5 × 1010 cm−2. Remarkable changes in device characteristics were seen at a fluence of 1 × 1012 cm−2 for carbon, oxygen, iron and krypton irradiation. Similarly, remarkable changes were also observed in the GaN layer for irradiations with fluence of 1 × 1012 cm−2. The results found on devices and on the GaN layer were compared and correlated. High energy irradiation with protons, carbon and oxygen produced no degradation in devices while krypton irradiation at the fluence of 1x1010 cm-2 resulted in a small reduction of 2% in the transconductance. Similarly, for GaN samples irradiated with protons, carbon and oxygen at high energy no changes were seen by XRD, PL and Hall effect, while changes in lattice constant and a reduction in PL intensity were observed after irradiation with high energy krypton. Low energy irradiation with carbon and oxygen at a fluence of 5x1010 cm-2 results in small change in the device performance while remarkable changes in device characteristics are seen at a fluence of 1x1012 cm-2 for carbon, oxygen, iron and krypton irradiation. Similarly changes are also observed by XRD, PL and Hall effect for the thick GaN layer irradiated at the fluence of 1x1012 cm-2. The device results and GaN layer properties are strongly correlated. Irradiation was performed at 68 and 120 MeV with fluences in the range from 1 × 10^7 to 1 × 10^13 cm2 . Before and after irradiation, dc and pulsed I – V characteristics, loadpull and S -parameters of the AlGaN HFET devices were measured. A thick GaN reference layer was characterized by x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and Hall measurements before and after irradiation. Proton, carbon and oxygen irradiation show no degradation in devices while krypton irradiation shows a small change at a fluence of 1 × 10 10 cm2 in the device characteristics. Aquatic-to-terrestrial subsidies are relatively small in most terrestrial ecosystems, but they can provide high contents of limiting resources that increase consumer fitness and ecosystem production. However, they also may carry significant contaminant loads, particularly in anthropogenically impacted watersheds. Global change processes, including land use change, climate change and biodiversity declines, are altering the quantity and quality of aquatic subsidies, potentially shifting the balance of costs and benefits of aquatic subsidies for terrestrial consumers. Many global change processes interact and impact both the bright and dark sides of aquatic subsidies simultaneously, highlighting the need for future integrative research that bridges ecosystem as well as disciplinary boundaries. We identify key research priorities, including increased quantification of the spatiotemporal variability in aquatic subsidies across a range of ecosystems, greater understanding of the landscape-scale extent of aquatic subsidy impacts and deeper exploration of the relative costs and benefits of aquatic subsidies for consumers. The crystal structure is a twofold superstructure of the aristotype ZrSSi and consists of puckered cationic [GdS]+ double slabs that are sandwiched by planar sulfur sheets containing S22– dumbbells. The thermal decomposition of GdS2 proceeds via the sulfur-deficient polysulfides GdS1.9, GdS1.85 and GdS1.77 and eventually results in the sesquisulfide Gd2S3. GdS2 is a paramagnetic semiconductor which orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 7.7(1) K. A metamagnetic transition is observed in the magnetically ordered state. Employing epitaxial stress on rutile TiO2(001) substrates, the transition can be tuned to occur close to room temperature. Striving for applications in oxide-electronic devices, the lateral homogeneity of such samples must be considered as an important prerequisite for efforts towards miniaturization. Moreover, the preparation of smooth surfaces is crucial for vertically stacked devices and, hence, the design of functional interfaces. Here, the surface morphology of VO2/TiO2(001) films was analyzed by low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction as well as scanning probe microscopy. The formation of large terraces could be achieved under temperature-induced annealing, but also the occurrence of facets was observed and characterized. Further, we report on quasi-periodic arrangements of crack defects which evolve due to thermal stress under cooling. While these might impair some applicational endeavours, they may also present crystallographically well-oriented nano-templates of bulk-like properties for advanced approaches. The catalytic activity may further be enhanced by alloying ceria with trivalent, catalytically active metals, such as Sm, promoting the formation of Ce3+ active sites. In this work, the structural and chemical properties of (111)- and (100)- oriented CeOx islands alloyed with samarium were explored by low-energy electron microscopy and X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. After Sm deposition on the as-grown CeOx islands, the near-surface region of (100)-oriented CeOx is reduced after exposure to H2 at 470 ∘C, whereas the deeper layers as well as the whole (111)-oriented islands retain the Ce4+ state. Subsequent reoxidation with O2 leads to the complete Ce4+ state recovery, suggesting the healing of oxygen vacancies. Additional annealing at 470 ∘C induces samarium diffusion into the ceria matrix. Yet, subsequent exposure to H2 reduces neither the (111)- nor the (100)-oriented CeSmOx islands, suggesting a quite unexpected stability of this system. Our results show that samarium oxide grows in a hexagonal A-Sm2O3 phase on Ru(0001), exhibiting a (0001) oriented-top facet and (113) side facets. Upon annealing, a structural transition from the hexagonal to cubic phase occurs, in which the Sm cations exhibit the +3 oxidation state. The unexpected initial growth in the A-Sm2O3 hexagonal phase and its gradual transition to a mixture with cubic C-Sm2O3 showcases the complexity of the system and the critical role of the substrate in the stabilization of the hexagonal phase, which was previously reported only at high pressures and temperatures for bulk samaria. Besides, these results highlight the potential interactions that Sm could have with other catalytic compounds with respect to the here gathered insights on the preparation conditions and the specific compounds with which it interacts. We have investigated the growth and redox properties of ceria nanoislands grown on Au(111) between 700 and 890 °C, which yields the CeO2–Au(111) model catalyst system. We have observed a distinct correlation between deposition temperature, structural order, and oxide composition through low-energy electron microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, intensity–voltage curves, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Improved structural order and thermal stability of the oxide have been achieved by increasing the oxygen chemical potential at the substrate surface using reactive oxygen (O/O2) instead of molecular O2 during growth. In situ characterization under reducing (H2) and oxidizing atmospheres (O2, CO2) indicates an irreversible loss of structural order and redox activity at high reduction temperatures, while moderate temperatures result in partial decomposition of the ceria nanoislands (Ce3+/Ce4+) to metallic cerium (Ce0). The weak interaction between Au(111) and CeOx would facilitate its reduction to the Ce0 metallic state, especially considering the comparatively strong interaction between Ce0 and Au0. Besides, the higher reactivity of atomic oxygen promotes a stronger interaction between the gold and oxide islands during the nucleation process, explaining the improved stability. Thus, we propose that by driving the nucleation and growth of the ceria/Au system in a highly oxidizing regime, novel chemical properties can be obtained. It is typically found in its +III oxidation state, which is stabilized by a 5f7 electron configuration. CmIII exhibits intense lumi-nescence from its first excited 6D’7/2 to its 8S’7/2 ground state in the red part of the visual spec-trum. Due to the nature of the 5f electron shell, this luminescence is sensitive to changes in the chemical environment of the CmIII probe, while being detectable in the trace concentration range. This unique combination has established CmIII luminescence spectroscopy as an ideal tool for speciation studies in complex systems, particularly those relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle. In this review, we present an overview of the developments and applications of CmIII lumines-cence spectroscopy in the last 20 years since the last comprehensive review was published. The discussed studies have been categorized according to their chemical environment into reactions at the water/mineral interface, studies of solids containing CmIII, aqueous complexation studies, spectroscopy in non-aqueous systems, and interaction of CmIII with biomolecules and biota. These systems correlate in large parts with areas of application in nuclear waste disposal sci-ence, separation processes within current and proposed nuclear fuel cycles, and radioecological research. We summarize the most important findings in the studies, identify emerging trends and persistent challenges in the field of CmIII luminescence spectroscopy. Finally, we offer an outlook on potential future developments and research directions in this area. Only the (100)-oriented ceria islands undergo substantial initial reduction upon samarium deposition at 740 K via a pathway similar to the strong Ce–ceria interfacial interaction, while the (111)-oriented islands remain in the Ce4+ oxidation state. This remarkable structure sensitivity is explained by the different energies required for oxygen vacancy formation for both oxide orientations. Subsequent mild re-oxidation with O2 results in the complete recovery of the Ce4+ oxidation state in the (100)-oriented islands, indicating the complete healing of oxygen vacancies. In contrast, extended annealing at moderate temperatures likely induces persistent samarium incorporation into the cerium oxide matrix. Our results provide new insights into the complex structure–activity relationships in mixed rare-earth metal oxide systems and have promising implications for optimizing catalytic reactions over such compounds in reducing environments. Humans are exposed to ES through the diet and phytomedicines. After its absorption, ES undergoes metabolic activation by CYP1A2 and SULT1A1 in the liver, which can give rise to DNA adducts and hepatocarcinogenesis. Until now, quantitative genotoxicity data for ES in human liver cells are scarce, correlating DNA adduct levels with critical effects such as clastogenicity. Here, we used human HepG2 and HepG2-CYP1A2 cells as well as primary human hepatocytes (PHH) to study the genotoxic, clastogenic and cytotoxic potential of ES and its crucial metabolite 1′-hydroxyestragole (1′OH-ES). In addition, primary rat hepatocytes (PRH) were used for selected endpoints. Treatment of HepG2-CYP1A2 cells with ES (0–2 mM) led to the concentration-dependent formation of E3′- N 2 -dG adducts. Apart from a moderate γH2AX induction, neither p53 accumulation nor cytotoxicity was observed. However, clastogenicity was demonstrated at ES concentrations ≥ 1 mM. Incubation of HepG2 cells with 1′OH-ES (0—35 µM) led to 10–50-fold higher E3′- N 2 -dG adduct levels compared to equimolar ES concentrations. Furthermore, 1′OH-ES caused γH2AX formation, p53 accumulation and cytotoxicity, which was confirmed in PHH. In agreement, 1′OH-ES induced clastogenicity at concentrations ≥ 25 µM. Molecular dosimetry revealed that a certain E3′- N 2 -dG adduct level is required to trigger clastogenicity and cytotoxicity. This was confirmed by Benchmark Concentration (BMC) modelling, showing that the BMC for clastogenicity is 12–17-fold higher than the respective BMC for DNA adduct formation. Our data indicate that a threshold level of DNA adducts is required, both in rat and human liver cells, to trigger markers of clastogenicity. These levels are unlikely to be reached in humans following chronic ES exposure through phytomedicines or the diet.
