However, this fault-tolerant capability can get weakened or even eliminated in short circuit fault due to the influence of flux coupling between the two isolated three-phase sub-systems. In this paper, a mathematical model of DTP-PMSMs with different mutual inductance between the two sub-systems is developed and analyzed. Based on the model, different short circuit protection methods are discussed and compared. Finally, a simulation of an EPU consisting of a DTP-PMSM, and a simplified constant speed propeller (CSP), is implemented to verify the short circuit behaviors. The motor features a toroidal winding stator and a sinusoidal Halbach array permanent magnet rotor. The structure of the motor is modeled as several 2D hollow cylindrical layers for analysis and simulation. The motor model is developed with a focus on estimating parameters such as motor mass, power, and efficiency. Based on this model, a motor design algorithm is created to generate a motor design map. Serving as part of a multidisciplinary design approach, the electrical motor design map is generated as a look-up table for interfacing with other design disciplines, such as aerodynamic design, mechanical design, and propulsion system design. Therefore, motor design parameters are selected with particular emphasis on geometry and mechanical performance. The full factorial experimental method is applied to create the design map. Finally, comparative studies are conducted using the controlled variable method to analyze typical relationships between motor geometry, mass, power, efficiency, and design parameters. The analytical model for magnetic field distribution is established by solving the governing Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations of the vector magnetic potential. The no-load magnetic field distribution from SHAR and the magnetic field induced from the armature reaction are individually analyzed. According to superposition theory, the complete magnetic field distribution is derived. Furthermore, an analytical model for motor electromagnetic characteristics, including motor inductances, electromagnetic torque, and motor on-load induced voltage, is formulated. Lastly, the precision of the analytical model is verified through finite element analysis (FEA) simulations across various operational points.
