Ge two-dimensional hole gases (2DHG) in strained modulation-doped quantum-wells represent a promising material platform for future spintronic applications due to their excellent spin transport properties and the theoretical possibility of efficient spin manipulation. Due to the continuous development of epitaxial growth recipes extreme high hole mobilities and low effective masses can be achieved, promising an efficient spin transport. Furthermore, the Ge 2DHG can be integrated in the well-established industrial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices technology. However, efficient electrical spin injection into a Ge 2DHG—an essential prerequisite for the realization of spintronic devices—has not yet been demonstrated. In this work, we report the fabrication and low-temperature magnetoresistance (MR) measurements of a laterally structured Mn5Ge3/Ge 2DHG/ Mn5Ge3 device. The ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 contacts are grown directly into the Ge quantum well by means of an interdiffusion process with a spacing of approximately 130 nm, forming a direct electrical contact between the ferromagnetic metal and the Ge 2DHG. Here, we report for the first time a clear MR signal for temperatures below 13 K possibly arising from successful spin injection into the high mobility Ge 2DHG. The results represent a step forward toward the realization of CMOS compatible spintronic devices based on a 2DHG.

N2 - In this work we present the progress in regard to the integration of a surface plasmon resonance refractive index sensor into a CMOS compatible 200 mm wafer silicon-based technology. Our approach pursues the combination of germanium photodetectors with metallic nanohole arrays. The paper is focused on the technology development to fabricate large area photodetectors based on a modern design concept. In a first iteration we achieved a leakage current density of 82 mA/cm2 at reverse bias of 0.5 V and a maximum optical responsivity of 0.103 A/W measured with TE polarized light at λ = 1310 nm and a reversed bias of 1 V. For the realization of nanohole arrays we used thin Titanium nitride (TiN) layers deposited by a sputtering process. We were able to produce very homogenous TiN layers with a thickness deviation of around 10 % and RMS of 1.413 nm for 150 nm thick TiN layers.

N2 - In this work, we present the monolithic integration of a TiN nanohole array and a Ge photodetector towards a CMOS compatible fabrication of a refractive index sensor in a 200 mm wafer silicon technology. We developed a technology process that enables fabrication with high yields of around 90%. Ge photodetectors with a Ge layer thickness of 450 nm and an area of 1600 µm2 (40 µm x 40 µm) show dark current densities of around 129 mA/cm2 and responsivities of 0.114 A/W measured by top illumination (TE polarization; λ = 1310 nm; angle of incidence = 14 °) at a reverse bias of 1 V. Nanohole arrays were structured in a 150 nm thick TiN layer. They were integrated into the back end of line and placed spatially close to the Ge photodetectors. After the metallization, passivation, and pad opening, the nanohole arrays were released with the help of an amorphous silicon stop layer. A significant impact of the TiN nanohole arrays on the optical behavior of the photodetector could be proven on the wafer level. Photocurrent measurements by top illumination confirm a strong dependence of optical properties on the polarization of the incident light and the nanohole array design. We demonstrate very stable photocurrents on the wafer level with a standard deviation of σ < 6%.

N2 - Titanium nitride (TiN) is a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible material with large potential for the fabrication of plasmonic structures suited for device integration. However, the comparatively large optical losses can be detrimental for application. This work reports a CMOS compatible TiN nanohole array (NHA) on top of a multilayer stack for potential use in integrated refractive index sensing with high sensitivities at wavelengths between 800 and 1500 nm. The stack, consisting of the TiN NHA on a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer with Si as substrate (TiN NHA/SiO2/Si), is prepared using an industrial CMOS compatible process. The TiN NHA/SiO2/Si shows Fano resonances in reflectance spectra under oblique excitation, which are well reproduced by simulation using both finite difference time domain (FDTD) and rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) methods. The sensitivities derived from spectroscopic characterizations increase with the increasing incident angle and match well with the simulated sensitivities. Our systematic simulation-based investigation of the sensitivity of the TiN NHA/SiO2/Si stack under varied conditions reveals that very large sensitivities up to 2305 nm per refractive index unit (nm RIU−1) are predicted when the refractive index of superstrate is similar to that of the SiO2 layer. We analyze in detail how the interplay between plasmonic and photonic resonances such as surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), Rayleigh Anomalies (RAs), and photonic microcavity modes (Fabry-Pérot resonances) contributes to this result. This work not only reveals the tunability of TiN nanostructures for plasmonic applications but also paves the way to explore efficient devices for sensing in broad conditions.

N2 - Plasmonic nanohole arrays (NHAs) exhibit extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) evoked by resonant excitation of surface plasmons at an excitation wavelength, which is highly sensitive to changes in refractive index in the surrounding dielectric. This can enable the use of plasmonic NHAs in on-chip refractive index sensors. Such sensors can be realized on the cost-effective silicon platform by the integration of a plasmonic NHA and a Ge photodetector, provided that complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible materials are used for their fabrication. Titanium nitride (TiN) as a biocompatible and CMOS-compatible plasmonic transition metal nitride is well-suited for integration on the silicon platform; however, the comparatively large losses within the material require geometry optimization strategies in order to improve the optical properties of TiN NHAs for sensing. In this work, we investigated different TiN NHA geometries both in experiment and simulation. We extensively characterized square and hexagonal arrays with varying pitches and nanohole diameters and provide a detailed comparison of their optical properties. We also discuss characterization results for surface refractive index changes imposed by depositing a thin Al2O3 layer on top of the NHAs. While we do not observe a clear advantage of hexagonal arrays compared to square arrays for sensing, our results highlight the importance of geometry optimization for TiN NHAs integrated with devices.

N2 - The coating of materials with diamond-like carbon (DLC) is a very common way to change and improve their basic characteristics. Although DLC is used on several substrates, the chemical and physical properties throughout the coating process on plastics are yet sparsely investigated. Two types of protective
coatings one sp3-enriched (robust, r-type) and one with more sp2-centers (flexible, f-type) have been realized on polyethylene by PECVD deposition. SEM and AFM analysis of coated samples of DLC types revealed diverse surface topographies on different scales and images appeared even differently smoothed by the carbonaceous deposits. Grains of both DLC types are platelet-shaped and nearly double in size for the robust type indicating fundamental differences in the epitaxial DLC growth. NEXAFS spectroscopy showed significant details of carbon centers in chemically different neighborhood displaying a characteristic fingerprint behavior. Comparison of deposition models revealed a mechanism of interlayer formation which is discussed in detail. Interlayer formation is clearly the appropriate explanation of the process for the current carbon deposition between these two unequal materials. An improved understanding of hard DLC and soft polyethylene assembly is given in the presented work.

N2 - The manufacturing of synthetic materials and their wide range of use for daily life is accompanied by essential requirements. Besides the basic performance of materials such as flexibility, elasticity, fracture strength and chemical resistance, further determinants are long term stability or biocompatibility. To overcome mismatches in surface characteristics of optimal parent material they can be customized for their intended use resulting in suitable coatings for profitable applications. The determining factor for such modifications is the preservation of basic material performance in addition to the benefit of further advantages like changed adhesive, improved repellent or antibacterial behavior. Protective coatings of selected plastic materials have been realized by depositing a few layers of diamond-like carbon (DLC). The assembly of soft plastic material and robust DLC coating is important for the resulting material characteristics. The detailed understanding of materials interphasing between these unequal materials and the conjunction of carbon centers in chemically different neighborhood is part of the presented work. Results will be transferable to other plastic materials with diverse needs, e.g. energy storage devices, water treatments and coatings for everyday commodities or industrial parts.

N2 - Synthetic materials are used in a wide variety of fields. Depending on the intended application the plastic material must meet specific requirements. Since the material always interacts with its environment, particular attention is required regarding the surface. Possible damage of the plastic material and further risks could be caused by the adhesion of bacteria, biofilm formation and encrustations. Therefore, bacteria-repellent coatings and surface-modified materials that allow for an effective removal of adhered bacteria are of extremely high interest for many applications. In this study Polyethylene (PE) is chosen as simplest model for relevant plastic materials. Surface modification of PE samples is accomplished by plasma-deposited diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings to achieve increased abrasion strength and bacterial resistance. Two types of nanometer-scaled DLC films with different layer thicknesses are compared by multiscale microscopic analysis. Further spectroscopic measurements with synchrotron radiation are performed. These results will provide an enhanced understanding of layer formation at the interface between the basic plastic material and the DLC coating and will possibly lead to optimal parameters for the surface coating to achieve improved product characteristics.

N2 - Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are often utilized to change the base properties of raw materials, e. g. to gain robust or chemically inert surfaces. Here the deposition of hard DLC layers on soft polymers is tested. The common industrial polymers polyethylene (PE) and polyoxymethylene (POM) serve as model substrates in the present work. In order to examine the effect of the carbonaceous layers on PE and POM thin diamond-like carbon films were realized via PECVD. The topography of the different coatings was detected by AFM and SEM uncovering the different influence of the substrate material, e. g. interlayer formation for PE. The composition of the surface structures were analyzed in more detail by NEXAFS, showing the hybridization of carbon atoms in chemical different surroundings from the pure polymer to the carbon coating. The comparison of carbon coated PE- and POM-composites enables valuable insights into the interaction between soft substrates and hard coatings. For the chosen settings in PECVD, POM showed incomplete coating, while on PE a very stable and robust composite has formed.

N2 - We argue that perceived fairness of the income generation process affects the association between income inequality and subjective well-being, and that there are systematic differences in this regard between countries that are characterized by a high or, respectively, low level of actual fairness. Using a simple model of individual labor market participation under uncertainty, we predict that high levels of perceived fairness cause higher levels of individual welfare, and lower support for income redistribution. Income inequality is predicted to have a more favorable impact on subjective well-being for individuals with high fairness perceptions. This relationship is predicted to be stronger in societies that are characterized by low actual fairness. Using data on subjective well-being and a broad set of fairness measures from a pseudo micro-panel from the WVS over the 1990–2008 period, we find strong support for the negative (positive) association between fairness perceptions and the demand for more equal incomes (subjective well-being). We also find strong empirical support for the predicted differences in individual tolerance for income inequality, and the predicted influence of actual fairness.

N2 - The publishers are receiving more and more inquiries about the topic “Floating Architecture”, particularly about technical details, water chemistry, as well as ice and wave problems. Since there is a lack of technical literature on this topic, most students working on projects or theses related to this topic send their inquiries. A time of general and quick changes results in a large number of daily publications. Therefore it is difficult to understand why there is a lack of lit-erature about floating structures. One has to consider that sea levels will continue to rise and consequently a larger number of people will have to live on the surface of the sea. Obviously, some expert knowledge is required which needs a longer period of time to be gained through scientific advancements and experience. The publishers, who have been dealing with the topic of floating houses for some years, are grateful to the authors for their agreement to allow the publication of their papers on floating architecture. These papers were mainly prepared for two conferences on floating architecture held in the study centre of the IBA building, Großräschen. Therefore, the reader should know that, along with the usual papers, only a selection of self-explaining transparencies is shown in order to meet the printing requirements. The included list of both the authors and their addresses makes it easy for interested people to send any inquiries to them. A short introduction as well as an outlook at the end of each paper is meant to draw attention to current events in order to be able to promptly identify opportunities and risks connected with living on the water.

N2 - The epitaxial quality of thin films crucially depends on their interaction with the substrate. Up to now, Ag-terminated Si(111) has been employed as the model substrate for the growth of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride
(PTCDA) on semiconductors. In this study, we will show that Bi termination results in PTCDA films of superior epitaxial quality. We have studied the growth of PTCDA on bismuth-passivated Si(111) in detail by means of spot profile analysis of low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorptionfine structure
(NEXAFS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The XPS results reveal the presence of intact PTCDA molecules on the surface upon adsorption. NEXAFS data indicate the PTCDA molecules being oriented with their molecular plane parallel to
the surface. STM shows a very smooth growth front of the PTCDA film, preserving the step structure of the substrate. High-resolution SPA-LEED data demonstrate the presence of a multidomain surface with a rich variety of PTCDA surface structures,
which were identified to be most prominently herring-bone polytypes. However, in the monolayer range, quadratic brick-wall structures and a nearly square-like structure as well as a perylene-like structure have also been found. Despite the simultaneous
presence of multiple domains, the individual domains show excellent lateral ordering, with larger domain sizes as compared to the case of Ag-terminated Si(111).

N2 - Background: The 3D printing is relevant as a manufacturing technology of functional models for forensic, pharmaceutical and bioanalytical applications such as drug delivery systems, sample preparation and point-of-care tests.
Objective: Melting behavior and autofluorescence of materials are decisive for optimal printing and applicability of the product which are influenced by varying unknown additives.
Methods: We have produced devices for bioanalytical applications from commercially available thermoplastic polymers using a melt-layer process. We characterized them by differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescence spectroscopy and functional assays (DNA capture assay, model for cell adhesion, bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation test).
Results: From 14 tested colored, transparent and black materials we found only deep black acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and some black polylactic acid (PLA) useable for fluorescence-based assays, with low autofluorescence only in the short-wave range of 300-400 nm. PLA was suitable for standard bioanalytical purposes due to a glass transition temperature of approximately 60°C, resistance to common laboratory chemicals and easy print processing. For temperature-critical methods, such as hybridization reactions up to 90°C, ABS was better suited.
Conclusions: Autofluorescence was not a disadvantage per se but can also be used as a reference signal in assays. The rapid development of individual protocols for sample processing and analysis required the availability of a material with consistent quality over time. For fluorescence-based assays, the use of commercial standard materials did not seem to meet this requirement.

N2 - The use of cerium oxide for hydrogen sensing is limited by the low electrical conductivity of layers deposited from a ceria target. To increase the electrical conductivity, partially reduced cerium oxide layers were obtained from a metallic cerium target by reactive magnetron sputtering. The proportions of the oxidation states Ce3+, present in reduced species, and Ce4+, present in fully oxidized species, were determined by ex-situ XPS. For electrical characterization, films were deposited on planarized tungsten finger electrodes. IV curves were measured over several days to investigate possible influences of oxygen and humidity on electrical conductivity. The morphological stability of the layers under ambient conditions was investigated by microscopical methods. The XPS results show a significant amount of Ce3+ in the layers. The electrical conductivity of as-grown samples is several orders of magnitude higher than that of samples grown from a ceria target. However, the conductivity decreases over time, indicating an oxidation of the layers. The surface morphology of the samples was found to be changing drastically within days, leading to partial delamination.

N2 - The transition towards a new, renewable energy system based on green energy vectors, such as hydrogen, requires not only direct energy conversion and storage systems, but also the development of auxiliary components, such as highly sensitive hydrogen gas sensors integrated into mass devices that operate at ambient conditions. Despite the recent advances in nanostructured metal oxide thin films in terms of simple fabrication processes and compatibility with integrated circuits, high sensitivity, and short response/recovery times usually require the use of expensive noble metals or elevated tem-peratures (>250 ºC), which results in high power consumption and poor long-term stability. This article presents the first steps of the work on developing a novel resistive hydrogen gas sensor based on ultrathin cerium oxide films, compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology and capable of operating at room temperature. Here, we show a multidisciplinary bottom-up approach combining different work areas for the sensor development, such as sensor architecture, sensing mechanism and deposition strategy of the active layer, electrical contact design depending on the desired electrical output, and fast testing under controlled environments.

This paper examines the interconnectedness of soil biodiversity, climate change, and societal impacts, emphasizing the urgent need for integrated solutions. Human‐induced biodiversity loss and climate change intensify environmental degradation, threatening human well‐being. Soils, rich in biodiversity and vital for ecosystem function regulation, are highly vulnerable to these pressures, affecting nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and resilience. Soil also crucially regulates climate, influencing energy, water cycles, and carbon storage. Yet, climate change poses significant challenges to soil health and carbon dynamics, amplifying global warming. Integrated approaches are essential, including sustainable land management, policy interventions, technological innovations, and societal engagement. Practices like agroforestry and organic farming improve soil health and mitigate climate impacts. Effective policies and governance are crucial for promoting sustainable practices and soil conservation. Recent technologies aid in monitoring soil biodiversity and implementing sustainable land management. Societal engagement, through education and collective action, is vital for environmental stewardship. By prioritizing interdisciplinary research and addressing key frontiers, scientists can advance understanding of the soil biodiversity–climate change–society nexus, informing strategies for environmental sustainability and social equity.

N2 - In this paper, we provide an in-depth assessment on the Bjøntegaard Delta. We construct a large data set of video compression performance comparisons using a diverse set of metrics including PSNR, VMAF, bitrate, and processing energies. These metrics are evaluated for visual data types such as classic perspective video, 360° video, point clouds, and screen content. As compression technology, we consider multiple hybrid video codecs as well as state-of-the-art neural network based compression methods. Using additional supporting points in-between standard points defined by parameters such as the quantization parameter, we assess the interpolation error of the Bjøntegaard-Delta (BD) calculus and its impact on the final BD value. From the analysis, we find that the BD calculus is most accurate in the standard application of rate-distortion comparisons with mean errors below 0.5 percentage points. For other applications and special cases, e.g., VMAF quality, energy considerations, or inter-codec comparisons, the errors are higher (up to 5 percentage points), but can be halved by using a higher number of supporting points. We finally come up with recommendations on how to use the BD calculus such that the validity of the resulting BD-values is maximized. Main recommendations are as follows: First, relative curve differences should be plotted and analyzed. Second, the logarithmic domain should be used for saturating metrics such as SSIM and VMAF. Third, BD values below a certain threshold indicated by the subset error should not be used to draw recommendations. Fourth, using two supporting points is sufficient to obtain rough performance estimates.

Guideline recommendations are often not implemented in practice. This can be attributed to factors such as patient preferences and characteristics, structural conditions, personnel or other resources, as well as cultural or ethical aspects. Adaptations to the local context (e.g., regional or hospital) result in so-called locally adapted guidelines (LAGL), which could improve implementation. We aimed to assess the awareness of LAGL among guideline developers in Germany.
Methods
An online survey was conducted via LimeSurvey in May 2024. The questionnaire, designed based on literature and expert opinions, consisted of 23 items, predominantly with dichotomous response options. Recruitment was conducted via email. Direct contact addresses were identified using the German guideline registry (n = 397). Additionally, a mailing list distribution was conducted through the guidelines working group of the German Network for Evidence-Based Medicine (n = 316). Only fully completed questionnaires were included in the analysis. Data cleaning and descriptive analysis were performed using Excel.
Results
A total of 63 questionnaires were fully completed. The most represented groups were physicians (65%) and methodologists (24%), most frequently in coordination (76%) or as group members (62%). The most judicious reasons for developing a LAGL were differences in patient populations (48%), currency of recommendations (46%), and patient values and preferences (44%). The most commonly cited likely reasons for developing a LAGL were economic considerations (32%), differences in patient populations (30%), and currency of recommendations (30%). Many respondents (59%) were aware of the possibility of adapting existing guidelines to the local context. Among these, approximately half (49%) had already locally adapted a guideline, with 75% using an adaptation framework.
Discussion
LAGLs are known among guideline developers in Germany and are generally developed using adaptation frameworks. Potential reasons for preparing LAGLs are diverse, with some discrepancies between perceived valid and likely reasons.
Highlights
Over half (59%) of surveyed clinical practice guideline (CPG) developers in Germany were aware of the possibility of adapting CPGs to local contexts, and nearly half of them had practical experience doing so.
Although several adaptation frameworks exist, only 44% of experienced adaptors were familiar with them, and among users, many found them only partly helpful.
Differences in patient populations, outdated recommendations, and patient values were rated as the most valid reasons for local CPG adaptation, while economic factors were seen as the most likely driver in practice.
Despite existing awareness, guideline adaptation to local settings remains underutilized and lacks structured implementation, highlighting the need for clearer definitions, better resources, and more practical examples.

T1 - Deposition of CeOₓ/SnOₓ-based thin films via RF magnetron sputtering for resistive gas sensing applications

N2 - Cerium oxide-tin oxide (CeOx/SnOx) thin films with varying Sn content were deposited using RF magnetron sputtering and investigated for hydrogen sensing applications. Structural, compositional, and morphological properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Gas sensing measurements showed effective hydrogen detection at room temperature, with the sensitivity strongly influenced by Sn content and oxygen vacancy concentration. Higher Sn concentration enhanced the sensing response, which was correlated with microstructural features obtained from AFM and EDX, as well as with the presence of Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states identified by XPS. This study highlights the potential of CeOx/SnOx thin films for possible back-end-of-line integration and provides proof-of-principle for room-temperature hydrogen sensing.

T1 - Titanium nitride plasmonic nanohole arrays with polymer coating : optical properties and their humidity-induced modifications

N2 - The use of titanium nitride (TiN) for the fabrication of plasmonic structures such as nanohole arrays (NHAs) can enable their integration into optoelectronic devices on the silicon (Si) platform, for example, for the realization of on-chip chemical sensors and biosensors based on refractometric transduction. With a corresponding functionalization of the TiN nanohole arrays, these ultra-compact devices can be utilized in the development of various affinity sensors and sensor systems, such as cost-effective electronic noses for the early detection of gases in the food industry or agriculture. In this work, we focus on two types of coating for functionalization of TiN nanohole arrays: electrochemically synthesized poly-N-methylaniline and layer-by-layer deposited polyacrylic-acid/poly-allylamine (PAA/PAH). Our investigation comprises the experimental characterization of the optical properties of TiN nanhole arrays coated with polymer layers of different thicknesses as well as a comparison with simulation results. We demonstrate the potential of our setup sensing applications by measuring changes in optical properties of TiN nanohole arrays coated with PAA/PAH upon exposure to air of different humidity.

T1 - Fabrication and optical characterization of CMOS-compatible honeycomb-like large-scale lattices of near-field coupled plasmonic TiN nanotriangles

N2 - Honeycomb-like plasmonic titanium nitride nanotriangle arrays defined by photolithography and fabricated in a modified silicon-germanium electronic–photonic integrated circuit process in a state-of-the-art pilot line. The nanotriangle arrays are characterized in experiments and simulations. The momentum-dependent reflectance spectra exhibit not only features that are consistent with surface lattice resonances in the honeycomb lattice but also minima governed by near-field coupling of the individual nanotriangles. The optical characterization results in combination with simulation-based predictions indicate that such nanotriangle arrays are capable of supporting collective plasmonic resonances that can be described as massless Dirac particles. The fabrication approach opens up the possibility of integrating the structures into device fabrication processes, and avenues toward near-infrared sensing and communication applications are predicted.
