Promoting neighbourhood sharing: infrastructures of convenience and community

Against the background of high levels of energy and resource demand in the residential sector, this paper investigates one potential way of making housing more sufficient: sharing at the neighbourhood level. Evidence from French and German case studies of ‘collaborative housing’ and ‘developer-driven neighbourhood sharing’ is used to identify two types of popular sharing practices: community-oriented and convenience-oriented. The first group of sharing practices is underpinned by creating, maintaining and experiencing social ties with neighbours. The second group of practices is guided by getting day-to-day tasks done smoothly and efficiently. To support the establishment of such sharing practices, some social and organisational measures are suggested. Thus, convenience-oriented sharing practices may be promoted by infrastructures and associated services that optimise the availability of sharing facilities and minimise temporal stretches and consumption work involved in practice performances. Community-oriented sharing practices may benefit from infrastructural arrangements that enable chance encounters, privilege community spaces over private areas and create welcoming spatial atmospheres.

Community-oriented sharing practices may benefit from infrastructural arrangements that enable chance encounters, privilege community spaces over private areas and create welcoming spatial atmospheres.
Practice relevance
Together with other alternative housing models such as tiny houses, micro-apartments or modular flats, neighbourhood sharing presents an innovation that has the potential to redefine the understanding of what the home is for. Which daily activities will be located within the home in the future, and which ones might be ‘externalised’, for instance, by making use of shared resources? This study provides valuable insights. By analysing three exemplary neighbourhoods in France and Germany, it identifies two popular kinds of sharing practices: convenience-oriented and community-oriented. New ideas are presented for how housing actors, in particular, housing companies, may support such sharing practices by suitable infrastructures and services.
[[2024,8,22
["Promoting neighbourhood sharing: infrastructures of convenience and community
[[2024,8,22
eng">Reducing single-use plastic in everyday social practices: Insights from a living lab experiment

Plastic is ubiquitous in everyday social practices, and few consumer activities do not involve its direct or indirect use. Single-use plastic (SUP) based on fossil fuels is particularly problematic, as it seems virtually unavoidable, especially in everyday products, from plastic wrapping cucumbers to shampoo bottles. Although reducing SUP is crucial, there is little evidence of achieving this in everyday social practices. This paper examines the practicality of reducing SUP and consumer frustration. We studied the social practices of 20 adults using diary records and workshops over the course of two weeks. Our findings suggest that everyday practices shape SUP use, and
reducing it disrupts daily life, even for eco-conscious consumers. Packaging-free shops are a popular approach to reducing SUP. However, consumers are hindered from using this alternative by limited availability, convenience and product variety. Future research should explore the seamless integration of alternatives to reduce SUP into
everyday social practices.

Sufficiency as a matter of care : practices to provide for needs

Sufficiency can be understood as the endeavors of economic actors to fulfill needs by delivering only what is necessary. This interpretation reveals a relationship between sufficiency and care economics, as both advocate for a need-centered economy. This study demonstrates the influence and support of care on the performance of sufficiency. It is divided into two parts: (1) the development of a care framework that describes the meanings and enablers of care, and (2) the analysis of empirical data from 14 sufficiency-oriented businesses from a care perspective using the care framework. The findings indicate that from a care perspective, the world is a network of vulnerable and interconnected beings who require individuals to engage in care relationships and activities. Time, financial resources, knowledge, collaboration, technologies, and narratives are essential enablers of care and, as the findings demonstrate, contribute to the implementation of sufficiency. This study proposes a novel narrative of sufficiency as a matter of care and encourages future scholars and practitioners to understand sufficiency orientation as part of a care economy—one that fulfils the needs of society over targeting profit maximization.

The article compares the current hopes and demands to fundamentally change waste and resource regimes via a ‘circular economy’ or a ‘circular transformation’ with the 1970s and 1980s recycling programs. The abstract – and problematic! – idea of circularity is connected to the hope of bringing about a rapid and long-term change in the management of waste and resources. Already about 50 years ago, environmental policy intensified recycling as a socio-technical solution to the waste and resource crisis, and referring to the ‘closed loop’ was a means to demand for systemic changes in production and consumption. Nevertheless, the late 20th century became the heyday of controlled landfilling; waste volumes continued to rise meanwhile the claimed ‘u-turn to recycling’ was not consistently implemented. While German citizens separated their recyclable wastes – and sometimes so with great commitment – the growth of recycling did not result in breaking with existing waste structures or in developing new production or consumption patterns. So where are the differences, and where the similarities, between today’s situation today and the past? And what lessons for today’s intentions can be derived from
the historical experience?
