    <title language="eng">World Heritage: Alternative Futures</title>
The World Heritage Convention has been described as at a crossroads, a juncture at which a decisive path towards its future sustainability, credibility and long-term-viability is needed. The Convention’s popularity continues to rise as does the pressure for new listings; but the original intent of international cooperation seems to have shifted out of focus. Will strategies for the Convention’s future be characterized by a conservative return to the rigorous and professional approaches applied at earlier stages that many call for but which have also been judged as elitist or Eurocentric? Or will it succeed in developing innovative 21st century strategic approaches and heritage conceptions which ensure long-term credibility and sustainability? Is the Convention likely to be a successful tool in future decades? Could there be different systems which may be better suited to respond to the Convention’s contemporary challenges?
