Two sequences were obtained from the Islinger M{\"u}hlbach Fen, in close proximity to the archaeological excavation site in Burgweinting, which documents an almost continuous settlement history since the Neolithic Period. The analyses of the sequences comprise stratigraphic, geochemical and microscopic charcoal analyses. For chronological information, radiocarbon dating was conducted on a total of 10 samples. Thus, the first long-term fire record was reconstructed for the investigation area, and the results were correlated, based on radiocarbon dating, with the available environmental information and settlement history in the Siedlungskammer Burgweinting. The fire record reveals an almost continuous, but alternating fire history. Furthermore, it shows that fire played an important role in the Siedlungskammer Burgweinting and that most probably as early as the Mesolithic hunterer-gatherers deliberately used fire.}, language = {en} } @misc{BonhageRaabSchneideretal., author = {Bonhage, Alexander and Raab, Thomas and Schneider, Anna and Raab, Alexandra and Ouimet, William and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg and Ramezany, Shaghayegh}, title = {From site to state - Quantifying multi-scale legacy effects of historic landforms from charcoal production on soils in Connecticut, USA}, series = {Catena}, volume = {232}, journal = {Catena}, issn = {0341-8162}, doi = {10.1016/j.catena.2023.107426}, language = {en} } @incollection{VoelkelLeopoldRaab, author = {V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg and Leopold, Matthias and Raab, Thomas}, title = {Ostbayerische Mittelgebirge}, series = {Exkursionsf{\"u}hrer zu ausgew{\"a}hlten Fachthemen Oberfrankens, N{\"u}rnbergs und der N{\"o}rdlichen Oberpfalz}, booktitle = {Exkursionsf{\"u}hrer zu ausgew{\"a}hlten Fachthemen Oberfrankens, N{\"u}rnbergs und der N{\"o}rdlichen Oberpfalz}, editor = {Maier, J{\"o}rg}, publisher = {Fachgruppe Geowissenschaften Universit{\"a}t Bayreuth}, address = {Bayreuth}, isbn = {978-3-9809181-9-0}, pages = {209 -- 224}, language = {de} } @misc{RaabHuerkampVoelkel, author = {Raab, Thomas and H{\"u}rkamp, Kerstin and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg}, title = {Stratigraphy and chronology of late Quaternary floodplain sediments in a historic mining area, Vils River Valley, East Bavaria, Germany}, series = {Physical Geography}, volume = {31}, journal = {Physical Geography}, number = {4}, issn = {1930-0557}, doi = {10.2747/0272-3646.31.4.357}, pages = {357 -- 384}, abstract = {Analysis of 288 percussion drillings from depths of up to seven meters and a 120 m long excavated section provide new and detailed information on the Late Quaternary to Late Holocene floodplain evolution from the most important Central European iron-mining region of the 15th century. The generalized sequence of the Vils River floodplain is built of five units representing facies of different genesis (rock/saprolite, gravel, sand, loam, peat) that are identified by physical, chemical, and mineralogical parameters (grain size, clast shape, and content, TOC, bulk mineralogy). Along the 87 km length of the valley, different units/facies are found at the Upper Vils River (UVR 1-5) and at the Lower Vils River (LVR 1-4b). In both river sections, fine-grained material (flood loam) forms the major part (up to 4 m) of the alluvial sequence. 29 age determinations (24 14C, 4 IRSL, 1 tree-ring analysis) show increasing accumulation of flood loam in the last millennium. The data correlate with the beginning of mining at the Vils River and hence suggest a causal connection with mining activities in the catchment—both on the slopes and in the floodplain—with intense deposition of flood loams.}, language = {en} } @misc{HuerkampRaabVoelkel, author = {H{\"u}rkamp, Kerstin and Raab, Thomas and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg}, title = {Two and three-dimensional quantification of lead contamination in alluvial soils of a historic mining area using field portable X-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) analysis}, series = {Geomorphology}, volume = {110}, journal = {Geomorphology}, number = {1-2}, doi = {10.1016/j.geomorph.2008.12.021}, pages = {28 -- 36}, language = {en} } @misc{HuerkampRaabVoelkel, author = {H{\"u}rkamp, Kerstin and Raab, Thomas and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg}, title = {Lead Pollution of Floodplain Soils in a Historic Mining Area - Age, Distribution and Binding Forms}, series = {Water Air Soil Pollution}, volume = {201}, journal = {Water Air Soil Pollution}, number = {1-4}, issn = {1573-2932}, doi = {10.1007/s11270-008-9948-9}, pages = {331 -- 345}, language = {en} } @misc{LeopoldDethierVoelkeletal., author = {Leopold, Matthias and Dethier, David and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg and Raab, Thomas and Rikert, Tyler Corson and Caine, Nel}, title = {Using Geophysical Methods to Study the Shallow Subsurface of a Sensitive Alpine Environment, Niwat Ridge, Colorado Front Range, U.S.A.}, series = {Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research}, volume = {40}, journal = {Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research}, number = {3}, issn = {1938-4246}, doi = {10.1657/1523-0430(06-124)[LEOPOLD]2.0.CO;2}, pages = {519 -- 530}, language = {en} } @misc{LeopoldDethierVoelkeletal., author = {Leopold, Matthias and Dethier, David and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg and Raab, Thomas}, title = {Combining sediment analysis and seismic refraction to describe the structure, thickness and distribution of periglacial slope deposits at Niwot Ridge, Rocky Mountains Front Range, Colorado, USA}, series = {Zeitschrift f{\"u}r Geomorphologie}, volume = {52}, journal = {Zeitschrift f{\"u}r Geomorphologie}, number = {2}, doi = {10.1127/0372-8854/2008/0052S2-0077}, pages = {77 -- 94}, language = {en} } @misc{RaabLeopoldVoelkel, author = {Raab, Thomas and Leopold, Matthias and V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg}, title = {Character, Age, and ecological significance of pleistocene periglacial slope deposits in Germany}, series = {Physical Geography}, volume = {28}, journal = {Physical Geography}, number = {6}, issn = {1930-0557}, doi = {10.2747/0272-3646.28.6.451}, pages = {451 -- 473}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{VoelkelRaab, author = {V{\"o}lkel, J{\"o}rg and Raab, Thomas}, title = {Effects of uranium mining on the landscape ecology in Eastern Thuringia - Mining dumps and flooplains as sinks and sources of mining related substances}, series = {GeoDarmstadt2010, Geowissenschaften sichern Zukunft, Frankfurt am Main \& Darmstadt, 10.
