Here we provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on these deposits. The Central European cover beds are divided into (1) the upper layer that is ubiquitously distributed and displays a relatively constant thickness; (2) the intermediate layer the distribution of which is mainly restricted to flat relief, to slope depressions, and to lee-ward facing slopes; and (3) the basal layer, which is rather widespread again. Both the upper and intermediate layer contain intermixed loess, whereas the basal layer is free of loess and typically has a high bulk density. Aside from the loess content, the composition of the layers differs, reflecting varying portions of crushed and chemically weathered rock allocated from up-slope. This causes notable diversity depending on bedrock and, thus, induces remarkable regional differences. Cover beds were mainly formed by periglacial gelifluction. The upper layer formed in the Late Glacial possibly during several short episodes of activity. In contrast, the underlying layers may be diachronous; nevertheless, they display recurring vertical sequences. This is probably due to the fact that loess-free layers usually could not deposit as long as there was loess in the environs, which may have been inherited from older deposits. Thus, the last phase of surface wash, during which older loess was removed, determines the age of the lower layers.}, language = {en} } @misc{GrzelaCapelliniKoczorowskietal., author = {Grzela, Tomasz and Capellini, Giovanni and Koczorowski, Wojciech and Schubert, Markus Andreas and Czajka, Ryszard and Curson, Neil J. and Heidmann, Inga and Schmidt, Thomas and Falta, Jens and Schr{\"o}der, Thomas}, title = {Growth and evolution of nickel - germanide nanonstructures on Ge(001)}, series = {Nanotechnology}, volume = {26}, journal = {Nanotechnology}, number = {38}, issn = {1361-6528}, pages = {385701}, language = {en} } @misc{DabrowskiLippertAvilaetal., author = {Dabrowski, Jarek Marek and Lippert, Gunther and Avila, J. and Baringhaus, Jens and Colambo, I. and Dedkov, Yu. Tonal noise measurements taken in an aeroacoustic wind tunnel are presented for airfoils with aspect ratio of 2, NACAxx12 profile and camber between 0 and 6\% at 40\% chord. The results show camber is an important parameter that determines the operating conditions for which acoustic tone generation occurs and the number and intensity of the tones produced. Airfoils with 0\%-2\% camber have an acoustic signature that is dominated by a high amplitude primary tone, whereas the spectra of airfoils with higher camber of 4\%-6\% feature a more pronounced side tone structure. Tonal noise production does not collapse with lift coefficient, demonstrating that the local flow conditions influence the noise source. Tonal noise production is explained in terms of changes to mean flow topology, namely the location of flow separation, which is linked to tonal noise generation. Scaling of airfoil tonal noise is found to vary with angle of attack and pressure gradient. Empirical scaling laws for the primary tone frequency dependence on velocity are also derived for the cambered airfoils.}, language = {en} } @misc{GeyerMoreauGiesleretal., author = {Geyer, Thomas and Moreau, Danielle J. and Giesler, Jens and Hall, Philipp and Sarradj, Ennes and Doolan, Con}, title = {Measurement of the noise generated by wall-mounted airfoils of different thickness}, series = {24th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference 2018, Atlanta, USA, 25 June - 29 June 2018, (AIAA 2018-3796)}, journal = {24th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference 2018, Atlanta, USA, 25 June - 29 June 2018, (AIAA 2018-3796)}, publisher = {AIAA}, address = {Reston, Va}, isbn = {978-1-62410-560-9}, language = {en} } @misc{BonhageHirschSchneideretal., author = {Bonhage, Alexander and Hirsch, Florian and Schneider, Anna and Raab, Thomas and Raab, Alexandra and Ouimet, William and Drohan, Patrick J.}, title = {Effects of Historical Charcoal Burning on Soil Landscapes in West Connecticut, USA}, series = {Soil Science Society of America, International Soils Meeting, Soils Across Latitudes, San Diego 2019}, journal = {Soil Science Society of America, International Soils Meeting, Soils Across Latitudes, San Diego 2019}, language = {en} } @misc{ZouScottBordenetal., author = {Zou, Zhihui and Scott, Michael A. and Borden, Michael J. and Thomas, Derek C. and Dornisch, Wolfgang and Brivadis, Ericka}, title = {Isogeometric B{\´e}zier dual mortaring: Refineable higher-order spline dual bases and weakly continuous geometry}, series = {Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering}, volume = {333}, journal = {Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering}, issn = {0045-7825}, doi = {10.1016/j.cma.2018.01.023}, pages = {497 -- 534}, abstract = {In this paper we develop the isogeometric B{\´e}zier dual mortar method. It is based on B{\´e}zier extraction and projection and is applicable to any spline space which can be represented in B{\´e}zier form (i.e., NURBS, T-splines, LR-splines, etc.). The approach weakly enforces the continuity of the solution at patch interfaces and the error can be adaptively controlled by leveraging the refineability of the underlying slave dual spline basis without introducing any additional degrees of freedom. As a consequence, optimal higher-order convergence rates can be achieved without the need for an expensive shared master/slave segmentation step. We also develop weakly continuous geometry as a particular application of isogeometric B{\´e}zier dual mortaring. Weakly continuous geometry is a geometry description where the weak continuity constraints are built into properly modified B{\´e}zier extraction operators. As a result, multi-patch models can be processed in a solver directly without having to employ a mortaring solution strategy. We demonstrate the utility of the approach on several challenging benchmark problems.}, language = {en} } @incollection{MoreauGeyerDoolanetal., author = {Moreau, Danielle J. and Geyer, Thomas and Doolan, Con and Sarradj, Ennes}, title = {Influence of Camber on Wall-Mounted Finite Airfoil Tonal Noise Generation}, series = {Fluid-Structure-Sound Interactions and Control Proceedings of the 4th Symposium on Fluid-Structure-Sound Interactions and Control}, booktitle = {Fluid-Structure-Sound Interactions and Control Proceedings of the 4th Symposium on Fluid-Structure-Sound Interactions and Control}, editor = {Zhou, Yu and Kimura, Motoaki and Peng, Guoyi and Lucey, A. Global environmentalchange, including land transformation and contamination, is causing concerning insect diversity loss, articulatedin the companion reviewScientists'warning to humanity on insect extinctions. Yet, despite a sound philosophical foundation, recognized ethical values, and scientific evidence, globally we are performing poorly at instigatingeffective insect conservation. As insects are a major component of the tapestry of life, insect conservation woulddo well to integrate better with overall biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. This also in-volves popularizing insects, especially through use of iconic species, through more media coverage, and moreinclusive education. Insect conservationists need to liaise better with decision makers, stakeholders, and landmanagers, especially at the conceptually familiar scale of the landscape. Enough evidence is now available, andsynthesized here, which illustrates that multiple strategies work at local levels towards saving insects. We nowneed to expand these locally-crafted strategies globally. Tangible actions include ensuring maintenance of bioticcomplexity, especially through improving temporal and spatial heterogeneity, functional connectivity, andmetapopulation dynamics, while maintaining unique habitats, across landscape mosaics, as well as instigatingbetter communication. Key is to have more expansive sustainable agriculture and forestry, improved regulationand prevention of environmental risks, and greater recognition of protected areas alongside agro-ecology innovel landscapes. Here, the surface morphology of VO2/TiO2(001) films was analyzed by low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction as well as scanning probe microscopy. The formation of large terraces could be achieved under temperature-induced annealing, but also the occurrence of facets was observed and characterized. The state-of-the-art joint, a single lap, results in a variation of wall thickness with local redirection of fibre orientation. In this paper, the influence of alternative joints of embroidered fabrics is analysed regarding the resulting mechanical properties of the part. The built test specimen contains different preform joints with different process-relevant parameters. Such as gaps between the sub-preforms, to analyse the influence on the mechanical performance. To reveal the various defects like voids, air pockets and to validate the fibre orientation, computer tomography (CT) investigation was performed on the built plates.
