The list was intended to raise awareness of the different smells in the rural and urban landscape that contribute to the enjoyment of nature, the appreciation of traditional arts and crafts, and food preparation. The research is based on a case study of Jimbocho, a book town in Tokyo known for its numerous shops for different book genres. This paper investigates the impact of the odours present at Jimbocho in contributing to place attachment. Interviews were conducted with bookstore owners to determine the social value of Jimbocho by investigating this heritage site's role and its smells in shaping identity.}, language = {en} } @incollection{NorbooOeterSkedzuhnSafir, author = {Norboo, Gawa and Oeter, Martina and Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra}, title = {Back to earth: negotiating tradition and change in Ladakh's building tradition}, series = {Building craft traditions in Tibetan and Himalayan architecture}, booktitle = {Building craft traditions in Tibetan and Himalayan architecture}, editor = {Feiglstorfer, Hubert and Blaikie, Calum}, publisher = {Austrian Academy of Sciences Press}, address = {Wien}, isbn = {978-3-7001-9538-2}, doi = {10.1553/978OEAW95382}, pages = {171 -- 190}, abstract = {Just two generations ago, earthen construction was the most common, if not the only, form of construction in Ladakh, an area of the north-western Indian Himalayas bordering both Pakistan and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. Ladakh is rich in diverse deposits of clay, earth, and sand, but lacks forested areas or other sources of timber. The particular combination of available resources and an arid, high mountain climate made earthen buildings the only viable architectural basis for this region. More recently, earth has started to become a popular construction material again in many parts of the world, including India and notably Ladakh. This chapter examines this "new tradition" that returns to earth as an appreciated building material.}, language = {en} } @misc{SkedzuhnSafir, author = {Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra}, title = {Scents of place : the significance of odours in the experience of heritage}, editor = {Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra}, publisher = {BTU Cottbus IKMZ-Universit{\"a}tsbibliothek}, address = {Cottbus ; Senftenberg}, isbn = {978-3-940471-79-6}, doi = {10.26127/BTUOPEN-6815}, pages = {1 -- 239}, abstract = {Odours play an essential role in our everyday lives. The sense of smell is vital for self-preservation, particularly in detecting potential threats. In the discourse of cultural heritage, the significance of odours is a research topic that is increasingly coming into focus. Odours determine the character of people, spaces, and places, but due to their ephemeral nature, they are more elusive and transitory than any cues or information resulting from vision or touch. Therefore, particular assessment methods, such as so-called smellscapes, will be required to analyse and assess them. Even if the cultural significance of odours is subjective and culturally determined and cannot be inherently charged with significance, their meaning is connected to individual or collective memory and identity. The meaning of odours is explored in places that vary in scale, from private homes to schools, subway stations, and urban quarters, and that can be found in different cities in and outside of Europe.}, language = {en} } @incollection{SkedzuhnSafir, author = {Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra}, title = {Making sense of scents}, series = {Scents of place : the significance of odours in the experience of heritage}, booktitle = {Scents of place : the significance of odours in the experience of heritage}, editor = {Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra}, publisher = {BTU Cottbus IKMZ-Universit{\"a}tsbibliothek}, address = {Cottbus ; Senftenberg}, isbn = {978-3-940471-79-6}, doi = {10.26127/BTUOpen-6815}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:co1-opus4-68154}, pages = {11 -- 28}, language = {en} } @incollection{SkedzuhnSafir, author = {Skedzuhn-Safir, Alexandra}, title = {Introduction}, series = {Visualising significance : mapping as common denominator : proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Heritage Conservation and Site Management}, booktitle = {Visualising significance : mapping as common denominator : proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Heritage Conservation and Site Management}, publisher = {Brandenburgische Technische Universit{\"a}t Cottbus-Senftenberg}, address = {Cottbus-Senftenberg}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.26127/BTUOpen-6163}, pages = {13 -- 16}, language = {en} }
