The growth of single crystals of Zr2+δPTe2 succeeded by chemical vapour transport using iodine as transport agent from 830 °C in direction of higher temperatures up to 900 °C. Zr2+δPTe2 crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R-3m (no. 166) with lattice parameters a = 383(1)…386(1) pm and c = 2935(4)…2970(4) pm for δ = 0…1, respectively. The electronic structure and chemical bonding in Zr2+δPTe2 was investigated by the linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) method. Both Zr2PTe2 and Zr3PTe2 show non-vanishing DOS values at the Fermi level (EF) indicating metallic character. According to COHP bonding analyses, mainly the heteroatomic Zr-P and Zr-Te bonds are responsible for the structural stability of Zr3PTe2. Primary breakup can be regarded as one of the least developed model components for simulating and predicting liquid jet breakup. How- ever, it is of paramount importance in many technical applications, e.g. fuel injection in engines and spray painting. This paper presents a numerical investigation of primary breakup of a turbulent liquid jet in still air at standard conditions using the one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) modeling framework. ODT is a stochastic model that simulates turbulent flow evolution along a notional 1D line of sight by applying instantaneous maps to represent the effect of individual turbulent eddies on property profiles. An important feature of ODT is the resolution of all relevant scales, both temporal and spatial. The restriction to one spatial dimension in ODT permits affordable high resolution of interfacial and single-phase property gradients, which is key to capturing the local behavior of the breakup process and allows simulations at high Reynolds and Weber numbers that are currently not accessible to direct numerical simulations (DNS). This paper summarizes our extensions of the ODT model to simulate geometrically simple jet breakup problems, including representations of Rayleigh wave breakup, turbulent breakup, and shear-driven breakup. Each jet breakup simulation consists of a short temporal channel section to initialize a turbulent velocity profile at the nozzle exit followed by an adjacent jet section. The simulations are carried out for jet exit Reynolds number of 11,500, 23,000, 46,000 and 92,000 while the Weber number is varied within the range 102-107. ODT has been applied to a wide range of complex multi-scale flows, such as turbulent combustion. Previous ODT comparisons to experimental data have focused mainly on planar flows. Applications to cylindrical flows, such as round jets, have been based on rough analogies, e.g., by exploiting the fortuitous consistency of the similarity scalings of temporally developing planar jets and spatially developing round jets. To obtain a more systematic treatment, a new formulation of the ODT model in cylindrical and spherical coordinates is presented here. The model is written in terms of a geometric factor so that planar, cylindrical, and spherical configurations are represented in the same way. Temporal and spatial versions of the model are presented. A Lagrangian finite-volume implementation is used with a dynamically adaptive mesh. The adaptive mesh facilitates the implementation of cylindrical and spherical versions of the triplet map, which is used to model turbulent advection (eddy events) in the one-dimensional flow coordinate. In cylindrical and spherical coordinates, geometric stretching of the three triplet map images occurs due to the radial dependence of volume, with the stretching being strongest near the centerline. Two triplet map variants, TMA and TMB, are presented. In TMA, the three map images have the same volume, but different radial segment lengths. In TMB, the three map images have the same radial segment lengths, but different segment volumes. Cylindrical results are presented for temporal pipe flow, a spatial nonreacting jet, and a spatial nonreacting jet flame. These results compare very well to direct numerical simulation for the pipe flow, and to experimental data for the jets. The nonreacting jet treatment overpredicts velocity fluctuations near the centerline, due to the geometric stretching of the triplet maps and its effect on the eddy event rate distribution. TMB performs better than TMA. A hybrid planar-TMB (PTMB) approach is also presented, which further improves the results. TMA, TMB, and PTMB are nearly identical in the pipe flow where the key dynamics occur near the wall away from the centerline. A stepwise solid-solid reaction of zirconium and tellurium according to Ostwald's rule of stages and the shrinking core model is revealed while phosphorus sublimes and subsequently condenses to react to the ternary compound. We have investigated the growth and redox properties of ceria nanoislands grown on Au(111) between 700 and 890 °C, which yields the CeO2-Au(111) model catalyst system. We have observed a distinct correlation between deposition temperature, structural order, and oxide composition through low-energy electron microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, intensity-voltage curves, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Improved structural order and thermal stability of the oxide have been achieved by increasing the oxygen chemical potential at the substrate surface using reactive oxygen (O/O2) instead of molecular O2 during growth. In situ characterization under reducing (H2) and oxidizing atmospheres (O2, CO2) indicates an irreversible loss of structural order and redox activity at high reduction temperatures, while moderate temperatures result in partial decomposition of the ceria nanoislands (Ce3+/Ce4+) to metallic cerium (Ce0). The weak interaction between Au(111) and CeOx would facilitate its reduction to the Ce0 metallic state, especially considering the comparatively strong interaction between Ce0 and Au0. Besides, the higher reactivity of atomic oxygen promotes a stronger interaction between the gold and oxide islands during the nucleation process, explaining the improved stability. Here, we measured primary data on 47 indicators of seven ecosystem functions in croplands and 16 indicators of four ecosystem functions in grasslands to assess how alley-cropping agroforestry performs compared to open cropland and grassland. Carbon sequestration, habitat for soil biological activity, and wind erosion resistance improved for cropland agroforestry (P ≤ 0.03) whereas only carbon sequestration improved for grassland agroforestry (P \< 0.01). In cropland agroforestry, soil nutrient cycling, soil greenhouse gas abatement, and water regulation did not improve, due to customary high fertilization rates. For this purpose, a library of in total 54 undoped, S-doped and N + S-co-doped porous carbons was obtained via a template-based synthesis procedure using mesoporous silica gel as the template. To understand the influence of S on the properties of the doped carbons three different S-containing precursors, namely dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), p-toluene sulfonic acid and thiophene, were used. In order to investigate possible synergistic effects of S- and N-co-doping, urea was employed as the sole N-containing precursor. The obtained carbon catalysts were characterized by selected methods such as N2-physisorption at 77 K, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Each carbon catalyst was tested in the oxidation of sulfurous acid (OSA) to sulfuric acid, the electrochemical oxygen reduction (ORR) and the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethylbenzene. Owing to the similar textural and structural properties achieved through template-based synthesis of the carbon catalyst library, the results of the catalytic redox-reactions could directly be related to the respective heteroatom dopant. The observed trends indicate that in these redox-reactions S-species behave somewhat similar to O-species bound on the carbon surface. Furthermore, it can be shown that N + S co-doping rather combines the positive and negative effects of the individual dopants on the activity, than creating a synergistic effect that surpasses the individual contribution.}, language = {en} }
