For these reasons such alloys have a relatively good workability and can be closed-die forged without preceding ingot breakdown even if the alloys contain no large fractions of the b phase at the working temperature. The present work was devoted to a combined study of the constitution and microstructural morphologies that develop in various two-step heat treatments of a single-step forged b solidifying alloy. The study included high-energy X-ray diffraction for in situ investigations of the constitution at the heat treatment temperature. It was observed that the phase ransformations are quite sluggish in the material which results in fine microstructures and some conditions that significantly deviate from thermodynamic equilibrium. Further, tensile and creep testing was carried out on the different material conditions in order to identify the range in which the properties can be varied. It is found that this easily forgeable material exhibits comparable strength, ductility and creep strength as more conventional peritectically solidifying alloys.}, language = {en} } @misc{LiangPaulStarketal., author = {Liang, Zhida and Paul, Jonathan and Stark, Andreas and Bezold, Andreas and Neumeier, Steffen and G{\"o}ken, Mathias and Pyczak, Florian}, title = {High-Temperature CoNi-Based Superalloys Strengthened by γ′-(Ni,Co)3(Cr,Al,Ti,X): The Effect of Refractory Elements}, series = {Metallurgical and materials transactions. Therefore, new high temperature superalloys based on the Co-Ni-Al-Ti-system with high content Cr and strengthened by γ′-(Ni,Co)3(Cr,Al,Ti) precipitates, have been developed, and the effect of different refractory element additions was investigated. STEM-EDS and HEXRD were employed to determine the elemental partitioning behavior and the lattice misfit between the γ and γ′ phases. Ta and Nb strongly concentrate within the γ′ phase, whereas Mo weakly partitions to the γ phase. W distributes equally between the γ and γ′ phases. These new superalloys have an unexpectedly high positive misfit compared with some conventional Ni-based superalloys and Co-based superalloys. Nb and Ta additions increase the lattice misfit further, while Mo and W decrease the lattice misfit. The effect of refractory elements alloying on the yield stress at room temperature was evaluated by analyzing the contributions of different strengthening mechanisms. Alloying with Nb or Ta significantly improves precipitation strengthening by increasing the antiphase boundary energy. Mo has the highest solid solution strengthening effect in the γ phase, followed by W. GaO is predicted to outperform the leading technologies based on SiC and GaN due to a three times higher calculated critical field strength. It has been identified that alloying with Al results in an almost linear increase in the bandgap between Ga2O3 (4.85eV) and Al2O3 (7eV). A critical issue in the bandgap engineering of GaO is maintaining reasonable electron mobility, which is low for the pure material (150cm2/V/S). This project aims to explore GaO by Al alloying, which allows tunable wide bandgaps for engineering material properties and at the same time maintains excellent crystal quality. PXRD and their Rietveld refinement on several AlGaO crystals indicate a preferential ordering of Al and Ga over octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Rainout-shelters which intercept part of the natural precipitation provide an effective tool to investigate effects of different precipitation levels on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In this study, we evaluate and describe in detail a fixed-location rainout-shelter (2.5 × 2.5 m) with partial interception of natural rainfall. We provide a complete parts list, a construction manual and detailed CAD drawings allowing to rebuild and use these shelters for rainfall manipulation studies. In addition, we describe a rainout-shelter control treatment giving the possibility to quantify and account for potential shelter artifacts. To test the rainout-shelters, we established the following three treatments each in eight winter wheat plots of the agricultural long-term farming system comparison trial DOK in Therwil (Switzerland): (1) A rainout-shelter with 65\% interception of rainfall, (2) a rainout-shelter control without interception of rainfall, and (3) an ambient control. The rainout-shelter effectively excluded 64.9\% of the ambient rainfall, which is very close to the a priori calculated exclusion of 65.1\%. In comparison to the ambient control plots, gravimetric soil moisture decreased under the rainout-shelter by a maximum of 11.1 percentage points. Air temperature under the rainout-shelter differed little from the ambient control (-0.55°C in 1.2 m height and +0.19°C in 0.1 m height), whereas soil temperatures were slightly higher in periods of high ambient temperature (+1.02°C), but remained basically unaffected in periods of low ambient temperature (+0.14°C). A maximum edge effect of 0.75 m defined a sampling area of 1 × 1 m under the rainout-shelter. The rainout-shelters presented here, proved to sustain under heavy weather and they were well-suited to be used in agricultural fields where management operations require the removal of the rainout-shelters for management operations. We simulated drought periods in organic (biodynamic) and conventional wheat fields and monitoredeffects on soil water content, microorganisms and crops. Above the wilting point, water content and microbial respirationwere higher under biodynamic than conventional farming. Highest bacterial and fungal abundances were found inbiodynamically managed soils, and distinct microbial communities characterised the farming systems. Most biological soilquality parameters and crop yields were only marginally affected by the experimental drought, except for arbuscularmycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which increased in abundance under the experimental drought in both farming systems. AMFwere further strongly promoted by biodynamic farming resulting in almost three times higher AMF abundance underexperimental drought in the biodynamic compared with the conventional farming system. Our data suggest an improvedwater storage capacity under biodynamic farming and confirms positive effects of biodynamic farming on biological soilquality. The interactive effects of the farming system and drought may further be investigated under more substantialdroughts. Given the importance of AMF for the plant's water supply, more in-depth studies on AMF may help to clarify theirrole for yields under conditions predicted by future climate scenarios.}, language = {en} } @misc{LiPyczakStarketal., author = {Li, Yuzhi and Pyczak, Florian and Stark, Andreas and Wang, Li and Oehring, Michael and Paul, Jonathan and Lorenz, Uwe}, title = {Temperature dependence of misfit in different Co-Al-W ternary alloys measured by synchrotron X-ray diffraction}, series = {Journal of Alloys and Compounds}, volume = {819}, journal = {Journal of Alloys and Compounds}, issn = {0925-8388}, pages = {9}, language = {en} } @misc{LazurenkoLaptevGolkovskyetal., author = {Lazurenko, Daria V. and Laptev, Ilia S. and Golkovsky, Mikhail G. and Stark, Andreas and Paul, Jonathan and Bataev, Ivan A. and Ruktuev, Alexey A. and Song, Lin and Gollwitzer, Christian and Pyczak, Florian}, title = {Influence of the Ti/Al/Nb ratio on the structure and properties on intermetallic layers obtained on titanium by non-vacuum electron beam cladding}, series = {Materials Characterization}, volume = {163}, journal = {Materials Characterization}, issn = {1044-5803}, pages = {13}, language = {en} } @misc{FroebelStarkPauletal., author = {Fr{\"o}bel, Ulrich and Stark, Andreas and Paul, Jonathan and Pyczak, Florian}, title = {Assessment of the capability of Zr, Y, La, Gd, Dy, C, and Si to enhance the creep strength of gamma titanium aluminide alloys based on their effect on flow stress and thermal activation parameters}, series = {Intermetallics}, volume = {Vol. 162}, journal = {Intermetallics}, issn = {1879-0216}, doi = {10.1016/j.intermet.2023.108018}, language = {en} } @misc{FuenningPaulManganellietal., author = {F{\"u}nning, Tabea and Paul, Martin and Manganelli, Costanza Lucia and Wenger, Christian and Mai, Andreas and Steglich, Patrick}, title = {Comparative simulation analysis of photonic ultrasound sensors based on silicon waveguides}, series = {Scientific reports}, volume = {15}, journal = {Scientific reports}, number = {1}, publisher = {Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, address = {[London]}, issn = {2045-2322}, doi = {10.1038/s41598-025-01953-9}, pages = {1 -- 13}, abstract = {Pressure sensors based on photonic integrated circuits (PIC) offer the prospect of outstanding sensitivities, extreme miniaturization and have the potential for highly scalable production using CMOS compatible processing. PIC-based pressure sensors detect the change in optical properties, i.e. the intensity or phase of the optical carrier wave inside miniaturized waveguide structures. The detection of ultrasound is achieved by engineering the waveguide architecture such that a pressure causes a high change in the effective refractive index of the waveguide. A range of PIC-based pressure sensors have been reported, but a comparison of the sensitivity of the different approaches is not straightforward, since different pressure sensitive waveguide architectures as well as photonic layouts and measurement setups impact the performance. Additionally, the used sensitivity unit is not uniform throughout the different studies, further complicating a comparison. In this work, a detailed simulation study is carried out by finite element modeling of different pressure sensitive waveguide architectures for a consistent comparison. We analyze three different sensor architectures: (A) a free standing membrane located within a tiny air gap above the waveguide, (B) a waveguide located on top of a deflectable membrane as well as (C) a waveguide embedded inside a pressure-sensitive polymer cladding. The mechanical response of the structures and the resulting changes in mode propagation, i.e. the change of the effective refractive index, are analyzed. The waveguide sensitivities in RIU/MPa for different waveguide types (strip, slot) and polarization states (TE, TM) are compared. The results reveal inherent limitations of the different waveguide designs and create a basis for the selection of suitable designs for further ultrasound sensor development. Possibilities for enhancing waveguide sensitivity are identified and discussed. Structural, compositional, and morphological properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Gas sensing measurements showed effective hydrogen detection at room temperature, with the sensitivity strongly influenced by Sn content and oxygen vacancy concentration. Higher Sn concentration enhanced the sensing response, which was correlated with microstructural features obtained from AFM and EDX, as well as with the presence of Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states identified by XPS. This study highlights the potential of CeOx/SnOx thin films for possible back-end-of-line integration and provides proof-of-principle for room-temperature hydrogen sensing.}, language = {en} }
