Temperate agroforestry potentially improves ecosystem functions, although comprehensive analysis is lacking. Here, we measured primary data on 47 indicators of seven ecosystem functions in croplands and 16 indicators of four ecosystem functions in grasslands to assess how alley-cropping agroforestry performs compared to open cropland and grassland. Carbon sequestration, habitat for soil biological activity, and wind erosion resistance improved for cropland agroforestry (P ≤ 0.03) whereas only carbon sequestration improved for grassland agroforestry (P \< 0.01). In cropland agroforestry, soil nutrient cycling, soil greenhouse gas abatement, and water regulation did not improve, due to customary high fertilization rates. Alley-cropping agroforestry increased multifunctionality, compared to open croplands. To ameliorate the environmental benefits of agroforestry, more efficient use of nutrients is required. Financial incentives should focus on conversion of open croplands to alley-cropping agroforestry and incorporate fertilizer management.}, language = {en} } @misc{BimboeseNicolayBryketal., author = {Bimb{\"o}se, Martin and Nicolay, Alexander and Bryk, Alexander and Schmidt, Karl-Heinz and Morche, David}, title = {Investigations on intra- and interannual coarse sediment dynamics in a high-mountain catchment}, series = {Zeitschrift f{\"u}r Geomorphologie : Supplementband}, volume = {55}, journal = {Zeitschrift f{\"u}r Geomorphologie : Supplementband}, number = {2}, doi = {10.1127/0372-8854/2011/0055S2-0046}, pages = {67 -- 81}, language = {en} } @misc{TolksdorfKaiserPetretal., author = {Tolksdorf, Johann Friedrich and Kaiser, Knut and Petr, Libor and Herbig, Christoph and Koč{\´a}r, Petr and Heinrich, Susann and Wilke, Franziska D.H. and Theuerkauf, Martin and F{\"u}lling, Alexander and Schubert, Matthias and Schr{\"o}der, Frank and Křiv{\´a}nek, Roman and Schulz, Lars and Bonhage, Alexander and Hemker, Christiane}, title = {Past human impact in a mountain forest: geoarchaeology of a medieval glass production and charcoal hearth site in the Erzgebirge, Germany}, series = {Regional Environmental Change}, volume = {20}, journal = {Regional Environmental Change}, number = {3}, issn = {1436-378X}, doi = {10.1007/s10113-020-01638-1}, pages = {20}, language = {en} } @misc{PfetschFuegenschuhGeissleretal., author = {Pfetsch, Marc E. and F{\"u}genschuh, Armin and Geißler, Bj{\"o}rn and Geißler, Nina and Gollmer, Ralf and Hiller, Benjamin and Humpola, Jesco and Koch, Thorsten and Lehmann, Thomas and Martin, Alexander and Morsi, Antonio and R{\"o}vekamp, Jessica and Schewe, Lars and Schmidt, Martin and Schultz, R{\"u}diger and Schwarz, Robert and Schweiger, Jonas and Stangl, Claudia and Steinbach, Marc C. and Vigerske, Stefan and Willert, Bernhard M.}, title = {Validation of Nominations in Gas Network Optimization: Models, Methods, and Solutions}, series = {Optimization Methods and Software}, volume = {30}, journal = {Optimization Methods and Software}, number = {1}, issn = {1055-6788}, doi = {10.1080/10556788.2014.888426}, pages = {15 -- 53}, language = {en} } @misc{FuegenschuhGeisslerGollmeretal., author = {F{\"u}genschuh, Armin and Geißler, Bj{\"o}rn and Gollmer, Ralf and Hayn, Christine and Henrion, Ren{\´e} and Hiller, Benjamin and Humpola, Jesco and Koch, Thorsten and Lehmann, Thomas and Martin, Alexander and Mirkov, Radoslava and Morsi, Antonio and R{\"o}vekamp, Jessica and Schewe, Lars and Schmidt, Martin and Schultz, R{\"u}diger and Schwarz, Robert and Schweiger, Jonas and Stangl, Claudia and Steinbach, Marc C. and Willert, Bernhard M.}, title = {Mathematical Optimization for Challenging Network Planning Problems in Un- bundled Liberalized Gas Markets}, series = {Energy Systems}, volume = {5}, journal = {Energy Systems}, number = {3}, issn = {1868-3975}, doi = {10.1007/s12667-013-0099-8}, pages = {449 -- 473}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{BaierErlebachHalletal., author = {Baier, Georg and Erlebach, Thomas and Hall, Alexander and K{\"o}hler, Ekkehard and Schilling, Heiko and Skutella, Martin}, title = {Length-bounded cuts and flows}, language = {en} } @misc{BaierErlebachHalletal., author = {Baier, Georg and Erlebach, Thomas and Hall, Alexander and K{\"o}hler, Ekkehard and Schilling, Heiko and Skutella, Martin}, title = {Length-bounded cuts and flows}, language = {en} } @misc{PeterKarichUllrichetal., author = {Peter, Sebastian and Karich, Alexander and Ullrich, Ren{\´e} and Gr{\"o}be, Glenn and Scheibner, Katrin and Hofrichter, Martin}, title = {Enzymatic one-pot conversion of cyclohexane into cyclohexanone: Comparison of four fungal peroxygenases}, series = {Journal of Molecular Catalysis : B, Enzymatic}, journal = {Journal of Molecular Catalysis : B, Enzymatic}, number = {103}, doi = {10.1016/j.molcatb.2013.09.016}, pages = {47 -- 51}, abstract = {Unspecific peroxygenases (UPO; EC 1.11.2.1) represent a group of secreted heme-thiolate proteins that are capable of catalyzing the mono-oxygenation of diverse organic compounds, using only H2O2 as a co-substrate. Here we show that the four peroxygenases AaeUPO, MroUPO, rCciUPO and rNOVO catalyze the stepwise hydroxylation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone. The catalytic efficiencies (kcat/Km) for the initial hydroxylation were in the same order of magnitude for all four peroxygenases (∼104 M-1 s-1), whereas they differed in the second step. The conversion of cyclohexanol by AaeUPO and rCciUPO was 1-2 orders of magnitude less efficient (∼102 M-1 s-1) than by MroUPO and rNOVO (∼104 M-1 s-1). The highest conversion rate in terms of H2O2 utilization was accomplished by MroUPO under repeated addition of the peroxide (87\% in relation to the total products formed). Using the latter UPO, we successfully established a micro-mixing reaction device (SIMM-V2) for the oxidation of cyclohexane. As cyclohexanone is a chemical of high relevance, for example, as starting material for polymer syntheses or as organic solvent, new enzymatic production pathways for this compound are of interest to complement existing chemical and biotechnological approaches. Apparent kinetic parameters (Km, kcat) for the catalase activity of UPOs were determined. Inactivation of UPOs by H₂O₂ is discussed with regard to O₂ production and remaining UPO activity. Furthermore formation of biliverdin as heme destruction product was demonstrated along with the formation of UPO compound III as a possible intermediate that forces the destruction process. Radical trapping experiments with methyl benzoate gave indication for the formation of hydroxyl radicals in the presence of excess H₂O₂. The previously known bismuth telluride iodides, BiTeI and Bi₂TeI, offer physical properties relevant for spintronics. Herewith a new cousin, Bi₃TeI (sp.gr. R3m, a = 440.12(2) pm, c = 3223.1(2) pm), joins the ranks and expands this structural family. Bi₃TeI = [Bi₂][BiTeI] represents a stack with strictly alternating building blocks. Conditions for reproducible synthesis and crystal-growth of Bi₂TeI and Bi₃TeI are ascertained, thus yielding platelet-like crystals on the millimeter size scale and enabling direct measurements. The crystal structures of Bi₂TeI and Bi₃TeI are examined by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. DFT calculations predict metallic properties of Bi₃TeI and an unconventional surface state residing on various surface terminations. This state emerges as a result of complex hybridization of atomic states due to their strong intermixing. Our study does not support the existence of new stacking variants BiₓTeI with x > 3; instead, it indicates a possible homogeneity range of Bi₃TeI.
