The Penman equation, which was developed for saturated surfaces, was modified for unsaturated surfaces and used for prediction of dewfall rates. The levels of surface saturation required for this approach were predicted using the water retention functions and the thicknesses of the BSCs. During a first field campaign (2-3 August 2011), dewfall increased from 0.042 kg m-2 for the initial sandy substrate to 0.058, 0.143 and 0.178 kg m-2 for crusts 1 to 3, respectively. During a second field campaign (17-18 August 2011), where dew formation was recorded in 1.5 to 2.75-h intervals after installation at 21:30 CEST, dewfall increased from 0.011 kg m-2 for the initial sandy substrate to 0.013, 0.028 and 0.055 kg m-2 for crusts 1 to 3, respectively. Dewfall rates remained on low levels for the substrate and for crust 1, and decreased overnight for crusts 2 and 3 (with crust 3 > crust 2 > crust 1 throughout the campaign). Dew formation was well reflected by the model response. The suggested mechanism of dew formation involves a delay in water saturation in near-surface soil pores and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) where the crusts were thicker and where the water capacity was high, resulting in elevated vapor flux towards the surface. The results also indicate that the amount of dewfall was too low to saturate the BSCs and to observe water flow into deeper soil. Analysis of the soil water retention curves revealed that, despite the sandy mineral matrix, moist crusts clogged by swollen EPS pores exhibited a clay-like behavior. It is hypothesized that BSCs gain double benefit from suppressing their competitors by runoff generation and from improving their water supply by dew collection. Despite higher amounts of dew, the water availability to the crust community decreases with crust development, which may be compensated by ecophysiological adaptation of crust organisms, and which may further suppress higher vegetation or mosses.}, language = {en} } @incollection{GerwinHuettl, author = {Gerwin, Werner and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Forschung zur Landschaftsgeschichte}, series = {Technik, Arbeit und Umwelt in der Geschichte : G{\"u}nter Bayerl zum 60. In this respect, the constructed catchment, Chicken Creek (H{\"u}hnerwasser), has been established to promote fundamental and interdisciplinary scientific research. Since 2005, an on-going monitoring program has been established in this catchment to measure hydrological, biological, meteorological, and pedological parameters during the ecological development of the site. This comprehensive and multidisciplinary monitoring program has produced a large and diverse data set. Managing and exploring such a complex data set for research purposes can be a cumbersome task. As a consequence, we developed an online data portal https://www.b-tu.de/chicken-creek/apps/datenportal/ to efficiently handle the data from Chicken Creek catchment. The portal was constructed using R programming language, Shiny package, and the accompanying local Linux server. This platform allows for efficient data discovery, download, visualization, and analysis. Data visualizations are freely available, while data storage is limited to the authorized users. In comparison with the commonly used data base tools, R-Shiny offers several advantages. As an open source package, this platform allows for constructing a web data platform in an interactive way taking into account the complexity and diversity of the data. The flexibility of this routine enables to make an efficient user-demand data portal rather than relying on predetermined outputs. It also offers flexibility in data handling by using many different R packages, rendering versatile and extensive functionalities. R-Shiny is particularly powerful in terms of statistical analyses. Although the Chicken Creek online data portal is complete and available, new features, and extended capabilities are under active development. The Chicken Creek data portal provides a comprehensive and reliable database to give scientists a fast and easy access to all collected data. The knowledge about these interacting processes is mainly derived from mature ecosystems. The initial development of ecosystem complexity may involve state transitions following catastrophic shifts, disturbances, or transgression of thresholds. We propose a conceptual framework of feedback processes in early states of ecosystem development affected by spatiotemporal environmental drivers. To test this concept, we used 10-year time series of hydrological, biological, geomorphological, and soil data from the constructed catchment Chicken Creek." The 6ha site was left to unrestricted development since 2005 and was intensively monitored. The data showed a very rapid development of the site with an increasing complexity and heterogeneity. In the first years, stochastic signals like the initial substrate conditions and external drivers like extreme weather events were the most important factors resulting in abiotic/abiotic feedback mechanisms shaping the morphology of the site and creating site diversity. The 6 ha area with clearly defined horizontal as well as vertical boundary conditions was left for an unrestricted primary succession. The developing ecosystem offers the opportunity to study most processes occurring at the interface of bio-, pedo-, geo- and hydrosphere. Particularly interactions and feedbacks between different evolving compartments as well as the establishment of ecosystem functions and services can be investigated during the ongoing ecosystem development. The catchment is extensively instrumented since 2005 in order to detect transition stages of the ecosystem. Comprehensive data recorded with a high spatial and temporal resolution include hydrological, geomorphological, pedological, limnological as well as biological parameters. This site offers the unique situation of an early stage ecosystem with highly dynamic system properties. The first years of development were characterized by a fast formation of geomorphological structures due to massive erosion processes at the initially non-vegetated surface. Hydrological processes led to the establishment of a local groundwater body within 5 years. In the following years the influence of biological structures like vegetation patterns gained an increasing importance. Feedbacks between developing vegetation and e.g. hydrological features became more and more dominant. As a result, different phases of ecosystem development could be distinguished until now. This observatory offers manifold possibilities to identify and disentangle complex interactions between ecosystem compartments in situ under natural conditions. The originally low complexity of the system is growing with time facilitating the identification of influences of newly developing structures on ecosystem functions. Thus, it is possible to study effects of small-scale processes on the whole system at the landscape scale. For more than 15 ye ars we have been doing research in agroforestry which has been carried out on different experimental sites in the field covering about 250 acres of alley cropping, more areas with short rotation coppice, and other tree-based field experiments located close to C ottbus / Germany. The presence of woody species in the alley cropping production system has been shown to contribute significantly to carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, improved water availability for crops, stimulation of higher soil faunal activities, soil erosion control, soil fertility improvement and sustained levels of crop production. Alley cropping systems have also come into focus for reclamation of post-mining areas where the initial content of soil organic matter (SOM) is generally close to zero and soil fertility is very low. The increase of SOM in reclamation areas depends on amount of biomass production and return to soil, and mechanisms of C protection. Production of Robinia pseudoacacia L. under alley cropping system has received considerable interest in these areas as an alternative to agricultural crops and an additional wood source, while acting as a potential C sink to counterbalance greenhouse gases emissions. The woody biomass accumulation of R. pseudoacacia reached 29.8 t drymass ha-1 after 6 years of establishment on reclaimed mine sites in northeastern Germany. Due to its high potential of litterfall production and N2 fixation, R. pseudoacacia contributed to improve soil physical, chemical and biological properties though increasing SOM, converting spoils into productive and sustainable soils. For this reason, in the temperate zone, agroforestry systems attract more and more public attention as they offer a promising and comprising way for adapting agricultural production to climate change and providing comprehensive ecosystem services. A comprehensive assessment of the ecosystem services in agroforestry systems in temperate regions should consider the potential to produce biomass and food, the evaluation of the carbon and nutrient budgets, the assessment of the potential impact of agroforestry on biodiversity at landscape scale and finally the exploration of the sustainability functions and socio-economic cross-cutting issues. Biological soil crust (BSC) patches may have smaller sizes, and ecophysiological, hydrological as well as pedological processes may be heterogeneously distributed within this level of resolution. A ground-based NDVI imaging procedure using low-cost equipment (Olympus Camedia 5000z digital camera equipped with a Hoya R72 infrared filter) was developed in this study to fill this gap at the level of field research, where carrying costly and bulky equipment to remote locations is often the limiting factor for data collection. Method principle and field data are presented, and the field experiment was deepened comparing NDVI measurements and CO2 turnover of soil crust samples in the laboratory, backing the reliability of the approach. A commercially available colour rendition chart with known red (600-700 nm) and NIR (800-900 nm) reflectances was placed into each scene and used for calibration purposes on a per-image basis. Generation of NDVI images involved (i) determination of red and NIR reflectances from the pixel values of the red and NIR channels, respectively, and (ii) calculation and imaging of the NDVI, where NDVI values of -1 to +1 were mapped to grey values of 0 to 255. The correlation between NDVI values retrieved from these images and NDVI values determined using field spectrometry was close (r2 = 0.91), the 95\% confidence interval amounted to 0.10 NDVI units. The pixel resolution was 0.8 mm in the field and 0.2 mm in the laboratory, but can still be improved significantly with closer distance to the crust or with higher camera resolution. NDVI values obtained using the new method were related to the net CO2 uptake of BSCs, where both slope and correlation coefficient of the respective regression function conformed with literature data. Geostatistical analysis revealed that both spatial variability of net CO2 uptake as well as size of individual hot spots of this parameter increased with crust development. We studied the organic acid quantity and composition of three commonly occurring pioneer plant species, the legumes Lotus corniculatus L. and Trifolium arvense L. and the grass Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth, to determine if plant growth and exudation differed with (nonsterile soil) and without (sterile soil) an indigenous soil microbial community. We investigated whether organic acids were found in the rhizosphere and surrounding soil and whether this influenced nutrient mobilization. This study consists of linked field investigations and a greenhouse experiment. Plants were grown in the greenhouse in either steriled or non-steriled sandy soil from a reclamation site in the Lusatian mining landscape (Welzow S¨ud, East Germany). After seven months, the plant biomass, root morphology, organic acids, and water-soluble nutrients and root colonization with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) were analyzed. Roots of all three plants in the field and greenhouse experiments were highly colonized with AMF. Calamagrostis epigeios and T. arvense had a significantly higher colonization frequency with DSE than L. corniculatus. The quantity and composition of organic acids strongly differed among plant species, with the highest number of organic acids found for L. corniculatus and lowest for C. epigeios. The quantity of organic acids was greatly reduced in all plants under steriled soil conditions. However, the composition of organic acids and plant growth in steriled soil were reduced for both legumes, but not for C. epigeios, which had a higher biomass under steriled conditions. Changes in nutrient concentrations in the field rhizosphere soil relative to those in the control were measurable after seven months. While the spectrum of organic acids and the growth of legumes seemed to be dependent on a highly diverse soil microbial community and a symbiotic partner, the grass C. epigeios appeared capable of mobilizing enough nutrients without an indigenous microbial community, and might be more competitive on sites where soil microbial diversity and activity are low.}, language = {en} } @misc{HuettlGerwin, author = {H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F. and Gerwin, Werner}, title = {Landscape Development From Point Zero}, series = {Pacific Science}, volume = {77}, journal = {Pacific Science}, number = {2-3}, issn = {1534-6188}, doi = {10.2984/77.2.11}, pages = {309 -- 325}, abstract = {Severe disturbances of landscapes entail an ecosystem development with the formation of structures and functions which may reach either a new equilibrium state or a state similar to the original ecosystem. Natural disturbances can result from major events such as volcanoes, glaciers, or denudations from landslides. Major disturbance may also evolve from anthropogenic influences such as from mining operations. They all can be considered starting points for the development of ecosystems from 'point zero', which was one central research interest of Dieter Mueller-Dombois. In this paper results from research in the Lusatian post-mining landscapes (Eastern Germany) are presented. Different methodological approaches are discussed. The well-defined 'point zero' of the ecosystem development allows for research on chronosequence designs as well as real time series studies. Chronosequences have been investigated to gain insight into the medium to long-term direction of the development. Real time series are recorded to obtain a more detailed understanding. The paper is structured into three main parts: First, effects of ecosystem disturbances by mining in Lusatia and the initial conditions for restoration are presented. In the following part practical rehabilitation measures and land use options are discussed. Finally, the third part summarizes results of long-term monitoring in an artificial watershed. In conclusion, post-mining landscapes allow for relevant case studies of ecosystem development after severe disturbances. The performance of biochar depends on the parent material, the pyrolysis conditions and the nutrient enrichment process, accounting for the variability of the final products. Recently lignite granulates came into focus offering an alternative characterised by homogeneity, vast availability of the raw material and a standardised production process including nitrogen enrichment through oxidative ammonolysis. In a greenhouse experiment the effects of N-modified lignite granulates (NLG) and composted biochar (BC) on the growth of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) in a sandy, carbon-free substrate were compared. Additionally, the effect of different NLG application rates (5, 7.5, 11, 15, 28 t ha-1) was investigated. Yields as well as nitrogen and water use efficiency of the soil-plant system were determined at the end of the experiment. Both organic amendments increased yields relative to control plants. An increase in yield, nitrogen and water use efficiency for NLG even at low application rates and a better growth performance compared to BC were observed. On the other hand, human impact on landscapes in Central Europe may date back to the earliest farmers from the Neolithic Period (c. 5500 a cal BC). At least since the Middle Ages intense land-use produced wide deforested areas. In the sand-rich North German Lowland these human-induced deforestation often resulted in the remobilisation of Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene sand dunes. Especially in the vicinity of former mining sites or glassworks the dune landscapes possess quite young stratigraphic disturbances (fossilized horizons, weak developed top soils). Within the scope of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre (SFB/TRR) 38, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), inland dunes in South Brandenburg were used as comparison sites to study structures and processes of the initial ecosystem development phase in an artificial water catchment. Here, we present first results of the pedostratigraphy and the age of two dune systems near Glashuette which is about 50 km south of Berlin. Based on twelve Optical Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and six radiocarbon (14C) datings a chronology of the landscape development for the last c. 10000 years is derived. Data prove that both dune systems - even though they are just c. 1 km apart and have similar morphological features such as height, width, and orientation - have a completely different history in aeolian sand deposition and pedogenesis. At dune 'Glashuette 1' a well established podsol forms the topsoil. At dune 'Glashuette 2' soil development is clearly in a more initial state showing only some humus accumulation and weaker podsolization processes. OSL and 14C ages of sand from 'Glashuette 1' range between about 11.4 ka cal. BC (3.9 m below surface) and 9.4 ka cal. BC (0.7 m below surface). Against that, the sands in 'Glashuette 2' are mainly dated to about 0.8 ka cal BC (3.4 to 0.7 m below surface). During its first 15 years, Chicken Creek showed a very dynamic development (Elmer et al 2013). Whereas the abiotic geosystem of the first 2-3 years was characterized by heavy erosion and sediment transport, primary succession by invading vegetation and the unexpected formation of soil crusts within few years resulted in more biotic-abiotic feedbacks that controlled catchment hydrology. Our observations over a period of 15 years indicate that even minor variations in initial substrate characteristics (e.g. texture) can have lasting impacts on geomorphical, hydrological and biological development like erosion intensity, groundwater levels or establishment of vegetation patterns. The time-series of monitoring data combined with a structure model of the catchment (Gerke et al. 2013) allowed the closure of the water balance by relatively simple calculations of water storage volumes and the estimation of evapotranspiration (Schaaf et al. 2017). Soil, including roots, was sampled from field monoliths covered with the aforementioned plant species. Root systems of both legumes were mainly restricted to the upper 20 cm of soil, whereas roots of C. epigeios also developed strongly at greater depths. On very young landforms physical and chemical properties of soils play a major role for the further evolution of the developing ecosystem as well as the landforms itself. Less is known about the very first alterations of physical parameters in accordance to different land uses and recultivation practices. Our study deals with the agricultural recultivation of post lignite mining areas in Lusatia, East Germany. The sandy substrate used for recultivation stems from depths of several meters and is therefore free of recent soil organic matter. The substrate itself is unstructured. After it has been excavated and transported on conveyor belts to the recultivation site, it is piled up to dams of a height of 1-4 m and levelled off with heavy crawlers. During these processes the substrate is subjected to strong mechanical stresses. This practice induces compaction which causes decreasing yields of agricultural crops to a certain extent. In this context we are investigating the effect of different organic soil additives in combination with different recultivation crop rotations on the development of soil structure for improved agricultural land use. Our experimental site has recently been heaped up and levelled off. On the 25 experimental sub areas 2175 undisturbed soil samples were taken out of three soil depths to characterize initial physical properties before any recultivation measures have been applied,. We present laboratory results of this status-quo sampling. The results indicate that the site is very heterogeneous in terms of mechanical stability, bulk density, total pore volume, saturated hydraulic conductivity and air permeability. Moreover, our results show that bulk density is not an appropriate parameter to derive soil functions, e.g. permeability or stability. Additionally we found that even in areas of bulk densities > 1.8 g/cm3 and with an inclination < 2 \% impressive run-off and gully erosion developed during heavy rainfall events. We conclude that initial processes altering soil physical parameters play a major role for the landform evolution within the first 12 months after dumping. As pioneer organisms, they play a key role during the first phases of habitat colonization. A characteristic crust was sampled 3 years after installation of the artificial water catchment "Chicken creek", thus representing an early successional stage of ecosystem development. Mean annual rainfall and temperature were 559 mm and 9.3°C, respectively. We combined scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and infrared (FTIR) microscopy to study the contact zone of algal and cyanobacterial mucilage with soil minerals in an undisturbed biological soil crust and in the subjacent sandy substrate. The crust was characterized by an approximately 50 μm thick surface layer, where microorganisms resided and where mineral deposition was trapped, and by an approximately 2.5 mm thick lower crust where mineral particles were stabilized by organo-mineral structures. SEM/EDX microscopy was used to determine the spatial distribution of elements, organic compounds and minerals were identified using FTIR microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The concentration of organic carbon in the crust was about twice as much as in the parent material. Depletion of Fe, Al and Mn in the lower crust and in the subjacent 5 mm compared to the geological substrate was observed. This could be interpreted as the initial phase of podzolization. Existence of bridging structures between mineral particles of the lower crust, containing phyllosilicates, Fe compounds and organic matter (OM), may indicate the formation of organo-mineral associations. pH decreased from 8.1 in the original substrate to 5.1 on the crust surface 3 years after construction, pointing to rapid weathering of carbonates. The levels of surface saturation required for this approach were predicted using the water retention functions and the thicknesses of the BSCs. During a single event, dewfall increased with crust development from 0.08 kg m-2 for the initial substrate to 0.10, 0.20 and 0.25 kg m-2 for crusts stages 1 to 3, respectively, which was well reflected by the model response. The suggested mechanism of dew formation involves a delay in water saturation in near-surface soil pores and EPS where the crusts were thicker and where the water capacity was high, resulting in elevated vapor flux towards the surface. The results also indicate that the amount of dewfall was too low to observe water flow into deeper soil. Analysis of the soil water retention curves revealed that, despite the sandy mineral matrix, moist crusts with clogged by swollen EPS pores exhibited a clay-like behavior. It is hypothesized that BSCs gain double benefit from suppressing their competitors by runoff generation and from improving their water supply by dew collection. Despite higher amounts of dew, the water availability to the crust community decreases with crust development, which may be compensated by ecophysiological adaptation of crust organisms, and which may further suppress higher vegetation or mosses.}, language = {en} } @misc{ElmerGerwinSchaafetal., author = {Elmer, Michael and Gerwin, Werner and Schaaf, Wolfgang and Zaplata, Markus Klemens and Hohberg, Karin and Nenov, Rossen and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Dynamics of initial ecosystem development at the artificial catchment Chicken Creek, Lusatia, Germany}, series = {Environmental Earth Sciences}, volume = {69}, journal = {Environmental Earth Sciences}, number = {2}, issn = {1866-6299}, pages = {491 -- 505}, language = {en} } @misc{BoldtBurischGerkeNiiAnnangetal., author = {Boldt-Burisch, Katja and Gerke, Horst H. and Nii-Annang, Seth and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Root system development of Lotus corniculatus L. in calcareous sands with embedded finer-textured fragments in an initial soil}, series = {Plant and Soil}, volume = {368}, journal = {Plant and Soil}, number = {1-2}, doi = {10.1007/s11104-012-1505-z}, pages = {281 -- 296}, language = {en} } @misc{FeldererBoldtBurischSchneideretal., author = {Felderer, Bernd and Boldt-Burisch, Katja and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F. and Schulin, Rainer}, title = {Root growth of Lotus corniculatus interacts with P distribution in young sandy soil}, series = {Biogeosciences}, volume = {10}, journal = {Biogeosciences}, number = {3}, issn = {1726-4189}, pages = {1737 -- 1749}, language = {en} } @misc{LuckeSchmidtAlSaadetal., author = {Lucke, Bernhard and Schmidt, Michael and Al-Saad, Ziad and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F. and Bens, Oliver}, title = {The abandonment of the Decapolis region in Northern Jordan - forced by environmental change?}, series = {Quaternary International}, volume = {135}, journal = {Quaternary International}, number = {1}, issn = {1040-6182}, pages = {65 -- 81}, language = {en} } @misc{BadorreckGerkeHuettl, author = {Badorreck, Annika and Gerke, Horst H. and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Morphology of physical soil crusts and infiltration patterns in an artificial catchment}, series = {Soil \& Tillage Research}, volume = {129}, journal = {Soil \& Tillage Research}, issn = {0167-1987}, pages = {1 -- 8}, language = {en} } @misc{RodionovNiiAnnangBensetal., author = {Rodionov, Andrei and Nii-Annang, Seth and Bens, Oliver and Trimborn, Manfred and Schillem, Steffi and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and Raab, Thomas and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Impacts of Soil Additives on Crop Yield and C-Sequestration in Post Mine Substrates of Lusatia, Germany}, series = {Pedosphere}, volume = {22}, journal = {Pedosphere}, number = {3}, issn = {1002-0160}, pages = {343 -- 350}, language = {en} } @misc{QuinkensteinPapeFreeseetal., author = {Quinkenstein, Ansgar and Pape, Dirk and Freese, Dirk and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Biomass, Carbon and Nitrogen Distribution in Living Woody Plant Parts of Robinia pseudoacacia L. In this region the largest brown coal (lignite) mining area of Germany is located. Lignite mining activities lead to major disturbances of the landscape. Recultivation efforts attempt to regenerate mining areas for agricultural land use options. The geological "parent" material is of saaleian origin, has a sandy texture and was excavated from several meters depths before mining and is now used for recultivating the excavated area. Consequently, it is free of recent soil organic carbon. The substrate itself is unstructured. The partly wet or dry substrate is subjected to strong mechanical stresses during the excavation, deposition, refilling and levelling processes throughout the year. This practice leads to more or less compacted soils/substrates which may result in small yields of agricultural crops. In this context we investigate the effect of different organic soil additives in combination with different recultivation crop rotations on the development of soil structure for improved agricultural land use. Our experimental site has been heaped up and levelled off in 2006 and 2007. On each of the 24 experimental sub areas undisturbed soil samples have been taken to characterise the substrates according to their mechanical and hydraulic parameters and to determine the scattering of these parameters on a site that is assumed to be recultivated as homogenously as possible. First results of our ongoing experimental study indicate that the soil physical properties such as texture, bulk density, precompression stress, air permeability and saturated hydraulic conductivity are not identical on each of the 24 subplots. The soil physical properties behave differently in relation to each other. E.g. we found a negative correlation between bulk density (∼1.35-∼1.90 g/cm3) and precompression stress (∼30-70 kPa) and no decisive interrelation between bulk density and air permeability or saturated hydraulic conductivity.}, language = {en} } @misc{SproeteFischerVesteetal., author = {Spr{\"o}te, Roland and Fischer, Thomas and Veste, Maik and Raab, Thomas and Wiehe, Wolfgang and Lange, Philipp and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Biological topsoil crusts at early successional stages on Quaternary substrates dumped by mining in Brandenburg, NE Germany}, series = {Geomorphologie: relief, processus, environnement}, volume = {16}, journal = {Geomorphologie: relief, processus, environnement}, number = {4}, issn = {1957-777X}, doi = {10.4000/geomorphologie.8083}, pages = {359 -- 370}, abstract = {The influence of biological soil crusts in natural ecosystems on structures and processes is well investigated. However, in South-Brandenburg (Germany), it is possible to study the development of biological soil crusts (BSC) during initial ecosystem genesis on two artificial water catchments with well-known ages and under differing starting conditions. The two experimental sites are located in the recultivation area of the lignite open-cast mining district of southern Brandenburg with a distance of approximately 1 km between them. Two different topographies were constructed at the experimental sites: the experimental plot at the catchment Neuer Lugteich was shaped like a dune, whereas the artificial water catchment H{\"u}hnerwasser was modelled as an inclined slope. The catchment Neuer Lugteich is four years older than H{\"u}hnerwasser. The original substrate at Neuer Lugteich is more sandy and carbonate-free compared to the original substrate dumped at H{\"u}hnerwasser. At both sites geomorphological differentiation and crust development were compared and the importance of substrate-dependent water availability and crust type clarified. Once settled, the crusts influenced the water regime of the soils by delaying infiltration through enhanced water repellency, and by limiting water infiltration. Chlorophyll analysis revealed that all crusts were at early stages of development. At Neuer Lugteich, the establishment of the biological soil crusts was closely associated with the vegetation succession, whereas no clear succession of the crusts could be observed at H{\"u}hnerwasser. The mosaic-like pattern of the biological soils crusts is associated with the distribution of fine-grained material here.zeige weniger}, language = {en} } @misc{MatosFreeseSlazaketal., author = Nevertheless, most of the reports compare soil properties under long-term sites. Thus, there exists little information on the effect of the conversion of silvopasture to arable or grassland use on soil P pools. The objective of the study was to determine the impact of converting silvopasture system (SP) into arable cropping and grassland system on the distribution of P pools and potential P bioavailability. We compared the following systems: SP system, SP converted to arable cropland (SP-AL), SP converted to grassland (SP-GL), and for comparative purposes, a long-term arable cropland (AL). The P fractionation was performed by a sequential extraction scheme, using acid and alkaline extractants on samples collected from the 0-10 and 10-20 cm soil layers. It was assumed that the large variations in soil-P fractionations are caused by the different management practices associated with land conversion. The results of P fractionation showed a dominance of calcium-bound P, HCl-extractable Pi constituted up to 36\% of the soil total P (TP). However, the type of land use did not affect this P fraction. On the other hand, the reduction in labile-Pi and NaOH-Pi fractions observed at the SP-AL site may have led to the decline in readily available P. The soil total organic P (TPo) content was 8\% and 17\% lower at SP-AL compared to SP and SP-GL site, respectively. Labile organic-P (labile-Po) content was markedly higher at SP site compared to arable soils, and was ≈ 10\% of TPo. The NaOH-Po constituted the highest fraction of the organic-P pool (55\%-79\% of TPo) across all the study systems, and was positively correlated with TPo (p < 0.01). The study indicates that conversion of SP system in temperate regions to arable cropping with conventional tillage seems to result in the reduction of P availability compared to SP, indicating SP as an important land-use practice.}, language = {en} } @misc{DillyRepmannFrankeetal., author = {Dilly, Oliver and Repmann, Frank and Franke, Gabriele and Gr{\"u}newald, Holger and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Microbial Characteristics of Young Soils on Disposal Sites of Coal Combustion Waste in Bosnia and Herzegovina}, series = {Geomicrobiology Journal}, volume = {28}, journal = {Geomicrobiology Journal}, number = {7}, issn = {1521-0529}, doi = {10.1080/01490451.2010.512032}, pages = {574 -- 581}, abstract = {Microbial communities are essential for a range of soil functions and adjust to soil development, environmental conditions and pollution level by community structure, abundance and activity. At desolated landfills of coal combustion waste (CCW) that were un-covered and covered with shallow soil material layers, soil microbial indicators were estimated for both the ecological and eco-toxicological evaluation. The young CCW sites with pH values of 9.5 and substantial coal-derived organic carbon showed significant microbial biomass content and nitrogen mineralization rates. At the 0 to 15 year old landfills, the microbial biomass content and activities increased significantly with age. However, large spatial variations occurred due to the variation of the cover material thickness, the degree of ash-aging and the tillage practices. Carbon dioxide was even sequestered at young CCW sites as indicated during laboratory incubation with an open apparatus purging continuously ambient air. In accordance, the respiratory quotient went down to 0.03 mol CO2 evolution rate per mol O2 uptake rate, indicating that the CO2 evolution rate is limited as an overall quality indicator. Within 15 years, these 'Technosols' showed pH values of 7.7 and decalcified while changes in microbial biomass content and activity rates were mainly related to N availability. We concluded that the available As, B, Cr and Ni pollution at CCW sites seemed largely immobilised by organic matter and alkalinity and therefore did not to inhibit the microbial colonisation and development of high microbial activity within 15 years. In this work, we studied the persistence of a polyacrylate polymer incorporated into a soil and its impact on plant nutrients at a reclamation site of former lignite mining in Lusatia (Germany). In contrast to autumn application, the incorporation of the polymer enhanced the sequestration of plant-derived carbon in the soil, which was reflected by a significant increase in the concentration of a lignin marker. Attenuated total reflexion-Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR) and total elemental contents in the applied polymer suggested an intensive cation exchange between the polymer framework and the soil-forming substrate. Both shear forces and shear strength under a given inclination of the terrain surface strongly depend on the interaction between mechanical and hydraulic stresses. These internal conditions as well as the interactions between these various components are fundamentals in all nonplanar regions under arable, forest or grassland management and they dominate also under various geoscientific aims. Generally, soil creep is a slow soil movement downslope under gravity. It can occur even on gentle slopes when the shear forces exceed the shear strength of the soil. Deposited material on slopes is more sensitive to such movements than well-developed soils due to the absence of a pronounced soil structure, site and management dependent hydraulic properties and functions, which results in low soil strength. We applied the described measurements and the modelling approaches to investigate and to analyse the stability of an artificially constructed water catchment (Chicken Creek) in the mining district of Cottbus/Germany, where glacial sand was deposited above a clay layer with an inclination of about 3.5\%. At the lower part of the catchment, an impermeable barrier (claywall)was positioned transversally to the main slope. Mechanical and hydraulic parameters of the soil layers were determined on soil samples taken from the field site. The measured values were inserted as input parameters for the finite element model (Plaxis 2D) to simulate soil movements and their effect on the stability of the catchment. The obtained results showed that the kind of construction negatively affected the physical low soil strength (low precompression stress) although the bulk density was very high (1.7-1.9 g/cm3 for the sandy material). Hydraulic conductivity revealed a significant anisotropy with higher hydraulic conductivity values in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, finite element results showed that the design of the newly formed landscape remains weak concerning mass movements too. The high water table in the sandy material in conjunction with low soil strength enhances the downslope movement and increases the shear stress near the clay wall at the lower end of the slope, which finally results in soil creep processes. These results also proof that such geotechnical and modelling approach is also suitable to validate or to predict mass movements and the internal processes responsible for these internal mass erosion.}, language = {en} } @misc{BoldtBurischNaethSchneideretal., author = {Boldt-Burisch, Katja and Naeth, M. Therefore, important parts of the system often remain 'black boxes'. In addition, natural systems are characterized by huge complexity and heterogeneity. To overcome these disadvantages artificially created watersheds may play an important role in ecosystem research. They offer the chance to investigate systems with well defined boundary conditions and inner structures. Furthermore, artificial watersheds might be an important link between lysimeter research and investigations at the landscape scale. The artificial catchment "Chicken Creek" ('Huehnerwasser') is one of the world's largest man-made catchments for scientific purposes. It was established in 2005 with an area of 6 ha (450 m x 150 m) including a small lake. The site is located in the Eastern German lignite mining district near Cottbus, about 150 km southeast of Berlin. The watershed was constructed by Vattenfall Europe Mining AG as the operator of the still active lignite open-cast mine Welzow-South. Construction work was done by means of large mining machines in co-operation with the Brandenburg University of Technology at Cottbus. The inner structure of this new landscape element is relatively simple: A clay layer was dumped as a barrier for seepage water overlaid by a 3 m sandy layer consisting of Quaternary substrate from Pleistocene sediments. The surface of the site has been flattened and the area was fenced to prevent disturbances. Neither amelioration nor any reclamation measures were carried out afterwards. The site has been left for an unrestricted natural succession. In 2007 the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre (SFB/TRR 38) as a joint project between 3 Universities (BTU Cottbus, TU Munich and ETH Zurich) was launched and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project group investigates the initial genesis of ecosystems with the Chicken Creek catchment as its main research site. A comprehensive monitoring programme is investigating the development of hydrological, pedological, geomorphologic and biological patterns and processes. It is planned to establish a structure and process model for this catchment to describe the initial development phase of an ecosystem in detail. Furthermore, the site will be the basis for (hydrological) model validation}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{DillyNiiAnnangBoehmetal., author = {Dilly, Oliver and Nii-Annang, Seth and B{\"o}hm, Christian and Gr{\"u}newald, Holger and Freese, Dirk and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Agroforestry as an environmental technology for multiple purposes and for atmospheric carbon dioxide and nitrogen fixation in the sensitive region Lusatia}, series = {Impact Assessment of Land Use Changes, International Conference, 6-9 April 2008 in Berlin}, booktitle = {Impact Assessment of Land Use Changes, International Conference, 6-9 April 2008 in Berlin}, pages = {S. 220}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{HuettlKoegelKnabnerZeyeretal., author = {H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F. and K{\"o}gel-Knabner, Ingrid and Zeyer, Josef and Munch, Jean Charles and Gr{\"u}newald, Uwe and Pretzsch, Hans and Schaaf, Wolfgang and Gerwin, Werner and Veste, Maik}, title = {Structures and processes of the initial ecosystem development phase in an artificial water catchment}, series = {Plant Life in an Extreme and Changing Environment, Book of Abstracts}, booktitle = {Plant Life in an Extreme and Changing Environment, Book of Abstracts}, pages = {89 -- 90}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{KruemmelbeinRaabBensetal., author = {Kr{\"u}mmelbein, Julia and Raab, Thomas and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Soil mechanical and soil hydraulic parameters on a recently established agricultural recultivation site in Eastern Germany}, series = {EUROSOIL 2008, book of abstracts, 25.-29.
