Solid residues from anaerobic digestion of municipal organic waste (MOW) are rich in nutrients and organic matter and have a promising potential to be used as soil amendment. However, no study has related amendment properties of MOW digestate of one origin to different treatment procedures. We therefore investigated the impact of drying, composting and sieving on final digestate properties and specifically nutrient availability and heavy metal and carbon elution. Samples were provided by a semi-industrial two-stage biogas plant with dry fermentation of MOW. Results confirm that in comparison to drying, composting of MOW digestates leads to a significant increase of K, P, Mg, Ca, Cd and Cr in the digestates. Sieving of composted digestates showed that heavy metals are not evenly distributed and that heavy metal concentration in the digestate increases with decreasing mesh sizes (highest concentrations in the fractions <1 mm). Although the element concentration is higher in composted batches, the water-extractability of nutrients, heavy metals and carbon is significantly lower from composted over dried digestates. A significant correlation was found between the dissolution of Zn, Ni, Ca and Mg and pH of eluate as well as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release (R > 0.7, p < 0.05). Results confirm that the extent of carbon elution depends on the degradation rate of digestates. Results of this study have shown that about 40\% of nutrients contained in the MOW inflow are mineralized during anaerobic and subsequent aerobic treatment. This process has been proposed as one option that facilitates the reincorporation of materials into the production cycle. However, composting also generates environmental impacts. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the most common approach to evaluate the environmental impacts of a process at different system stages. Nevertheless, applying LCA in composting facilities is challenging due to the extensive information required, the lack of standardization on the initial assumptions, the definition of system boundaries, and the high diversity of existing composting technologies. This paper systematically reviews LCA studies in biowaste and/or green waste composting. The study highlights the challenges that should be met in order to improving the application of LCA to evaluate the environmental impacts of this type or waste treatment strategy. The review protocol used identified 456 papers published between 2010 and 2022. After the screening, 56 papers were selected, read, and thoroughly analyzed. The results show that: i) about 68\% of the studies aimed to compare composting with other solid waste management options; ii) there was a wide diversity among the impact categories considered, which predominantly included climate change and ozone depletion; iii) there was no consensus on the functional unit or the system boundaries; iv) the main gaseous emissions studied were ammonia, methane, and nitrogen oxide, which were generally determined by emission factors; v) the avoided environmental impacts associated with the end-product quality and its application as an organic amendment or soil improver were ignored. Results were obtained using four different MOW digestate amendments of one origin (loose, pelletized and agglomerated) during a 24-hours shaker-experiment and a bag-experiment on grassland, which was subsequently sampled over 21 months. Results show that short-term element leaching is higher from loose amendment and small agglomerates, probably caused by higher surface area und lower stability of these amendments. Biggest degradation effects can be seen 7 months after application to soil. However, all four amendments are still present after 21 months. W{\"a}hrend der Aufbereitung ist jedoch eine Teiltrocknung der G{\"a}rr{\"u}ckst{\"a}nde unumg{\"a}nglich, was zun{\"a}chst zum Stickstoffverlust f{\"u}hrt. Der St{\"o}rstoffgehalt im G{\"a}rr{\"u}ckstand ist dadurch vergleichsweise h{\"o}her als bei anderen Verfahren, was einen gr{\"o}ßeren Aufbereitungsaufwand nach sich zieht.}, language = {de} } @article{DornackBilitewski, author = {Dornack, Christina and Bilitewski, Bernd}, title = {On the ball - Germany excels on the recycling league table}, series = {Waste management world}, journal = {Waste management world}, number = {May - June}, issn = {1476-1394}, pages = {32 -- 38}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Dornack, author = {Dornack, Christina}, title = {Digestion of residual milk and dairy products}, series = {Venice 2010, Third International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, Cini Foundation, Venice, Italy, 8 - 11 November 2010}, booktitle = {Venice 2010, Third International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, Cini Foundation, Venice, Italy, 8 - 11 November 2010}, publisher = {Cisa Publ.}, isbn = {978-88-626-5008-3}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Dornack, author = {Dornack, Christina}, title = {Biogas from waste, agricultural residues and renewables - contribution of future energy supply}, series = {Waste-to-energy in the city of tommorrow, International workshop proceedings, Hanoi, October 25th - 27th 2010}, booktitle = {Waste-to-energy in the city of tommorrow, International workshop proceedings, Hanoi, October 25th - 27th 2010}, address = {Dresden [u.a.]}, isbn = {978-604-911-001-6}, pages = {124 -- 130}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Dornack, author = {Dornack, Christina}, title = {Material flow analysis of biogas systems - an example of nitrogen and sulphur}, series = {Venice 2010, Third International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, Cini Foundation, Venice, Italy, 8 - 11 November 2010}, booktitle = {Venice 2010, Third International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, Cini Foundation, Venice, Italy, 8 - 11 November 2010}, publisher = {Cisa Publ.}, isbn = {978-88-626-5008-3}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Dornack, author = {Dornack, Christina}, title = {Digestion of residual milk}, series = {From research to industry and markets, proceedings, 19th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, ICC Berlin, International Congress Center Berlin, Germany, conference 6 - 10 June 2011, exhibition 6 - 9 June 2011}, booktitle = {From research to industry and markets, proceedings, 19th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, ICC Berlin, International Congress Center Berlin, Germany, conference 6 - 10 June 2011, exhibition 6 - 9 June 2011}, publisher = {ETA-Florence Renewable Energies}, address = {Florence}, isbn = {978-88-89407-55-7}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Dornack, author = {Dornack, Christina}, title = {Gr{\"u}ngutverwertung in regionalen Stoffkreisl{\"a}ufen}, series = {4.
