Individual or group key actors accessing resources foster these developments through networks. In light of regional clustering and agglomeration effects on the one hand and increased virtual mobility on the other hand, assumptions about the spatiality of such networks are highly controversial. Our paper takes this as a point of departure, asking how spatiality is constructed in the networks of so-called 'digital pioneers' (DPs). The sampling process took place in two German rural regions with different preconditions for digital technology adoption, where we conducted egocentric network analysis and qualitative interviews. Employing the assemblage perspective, we analysed networks of 30 individuals in terms of the analytical categories of territoriality, stability and connectivity. Our findings distinguish between three important roles of network contacts: (1) multipliers in social networking, (2) users of the DP's products and services, as well as (3) close family members that are important in professional contexts. Although DPs are often deeply embedded in and feel attached to their region, networks vary significantly in their territorial radius, also including highly functional problem-solving contacts to distant places. Consequently, our evidence challenges static territorial models of innovation processes, advocating for processual and multidimensional perspectives that consider social networks and individual agency. Likewise, our study complements current research on rural governance by shifting the focus from key institutions and formal networks to less formally integrated actors and problem-solving networks.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Binder, author = {Binder, Julia}, title = {Von Aktanten und Netzwerken - ANT und Heritage Studies}, series = {Denkmal - Erbe - Heritage, Begriffshorizonte am Beispiel der Industriekultur, Gemeinsame Jahrestagung 2017 des Arbeitskreises Theorie und Lehre der Denkmalpflege und des DFG-Graduiertenkollegs 2227 "Identit{\"a}t und Erbe" in Berlin, 2017}, booktitle = {Denkmal - Erbe - Heritage, Begriffshorizonte am Beispiel der Industriekultur, Gemeinsame Jahrestagung 2017 des Arbeitskreises Theorie und Lehre der Denkmalpflege und des DFG-Graduiertenkollegs 2227 "Identit{\"a}t und Erbe" in Berlin, 2017}, editor = {Bogner, Simone and Franz, Birgit and Meier, Hans-Rudolf and Steiner, Marion}, publisher = {Verlag J{\"o}rg Mitzka}, address = {Holzminden}, isbn = {978-3-95954-061-2}, doi = {10.11588/arthistoricum.374.531}, pages = {178 -- 185}, abstract = {Hodder (2000), Law (2004) und Latour (1988,2005) proklamieren mit der Kritik an einem Materialit{\"a}tsbegriff als Container, Kontext oder Hintergrund f{\"u}r soziale Interaktionen einen Paradigmenwechsel. However, demographic and structural changes challenge public transport networks in peripheral regions and lead to economic shrinkage. This, in turn, undermines the principle of creating or maintaining equal living conditions across Germany and leads to spatial polarization. Limited mobility is closely connected to social exclusion and warrants an in-depth analysis. Our paper examines the commuting patterns of apprentices in rural Brandenburg, Germany. It is based on a survey of apprentices in tourism and the food industry. The study finds that apprentices in rural areas are confronted with public transport deficits but also apply strategies for dealing with these problems. The paper also shows how this relates to social exclusion and to current planning debates regarding co-production and digitalization in the context of public service provision.}, language = {en} } @misc{MaternBinderNoack, author = {Matern, Antje and Binder, Julia and Noack, Anika}, title = {Smart regions: insights from hybridization and peripheralization research}, series = {European Planning Studies}, volume = {28(2020)}, journal = {European Planning Studies}, number = {10}, issn = {0965-4313}, doi = {10.1080/09654313.2019.1703910}, pages = {2060 -- 2077}, language = {en} } @incollection{Binder, author = {Binder, Julia}, title = {Smart city strategies}, series = {Brosch{\"u}re}, booktitle = {Brosch{\"u}re}, editor = {Terletsky, Maksym and Weidner, Silke and Viderman, Tihomir}, publisher = {City Institute Lviv}, address = {Lviv}, pages = {66 -- 71}, language = {en} } @misc{BinderSept, author = {Binder, Julia and Sept, Ariane}, title = {Smart villagers and digital pioneers? An important strand of research into digitalisation in rural areas can be described as agency perspectives. Current studies point to the driving, transformative force of key figures, for example social entrepreneurs, smart villagers or spatial pioneers. At heart, these studies propose that paths for collective action can be developed via key figures, thus generating ways to change established rules and norms. This paper represents a methodological contribution to this strand of research by subjecting the debate on leadership through key figures to a quantitative, bibliometric analysis, on the basis of which a heuristic is proposed in order to develop relevant research questions. Based on different strands of discourse, our results show that unequal spatial development ismanifested in an urban bias, but also demonstrate the potential of the growing research field in rural regional development.}, language = {en} }
