In this work, we studied the persistence of a polyacrylate polymer incorporated into a soil and its impact on plant nutrients at a reclamation site of former lignite mining in Lusatia (Germany). In contrast to autumn application, the incorporation of the polymer enhanced the sequestration of plant-derived carbon in the soil, which was reflected by a significant increase in the concentration of a lignin marker. Attenuated total reflexion-Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR) and total elemental contents in the applied polymer suggested an intensive cation exchange between the polymer framework and the soil-forming substrate. In addition, there was an enrichment of carbonaceous material, which seems to reduce the swelling and thus the water-holding capacity of the cross-linked polyacrylate. In this region the largest brown coal (lignite) mining area of Germany is located. Lignite mining activities lead to major disturbances of the landscape. Recultivation efforts attempt to regenerate mining areas for agricultural land use options. The geological "parent" material is of saaleian origin, has a sandy texture and was excavated from several meters depths before mining and is now used for recultivating the excavated area. Consequently, it is free of recent soil organic carbon. The substrate itself is unstructured. The partly wet or dry substrate is subjected to strong mechanical stresses during the excavation, deposition, refilling and levelling processes throughout the year. This practice leads to more or less compacted soils/substrates which may result in small yields of agricultural crops. In this context we investigate the effect of different organic soil additives in combination with different recultivation crop rotations on the development of soil structure for improved agricultural land use. Our experimental site has been heaped up and levelled off in 2006 and 2007. On each of the 24 experimental sub areas undisturbed soil samples have been taken to characterise the substrates according to their mechanical and hydraulic parameters and to determine the scattering of these parameters on a site that is assumed to be recultivated as homogenously as possible. First results of our ongoing experimental study indicate that the soil physical properties such as texture, bulk density, precompression stress, air permeability and saturated hydraulic conductivity are not identical on each of the 24 subplots. The soil physical properties behave differently in relation to each other. E.g. we found a negative correlation between bulk density (∼1.35-∼1.90 g/cm3) and precompression stress (∼30-70 kPa) and no decisive interrelation between bulk density and air permeability or saturated hydraulic conductivity.}, language = {en} } @incollection{BensFelixHenningsen, author = {Bens, Oliver and Felix-Henningsen, Peter}, title = {Variability of litter decomposition and nitrogen turnover in different Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) ecosystems in Northwest Germany under the influence of groundwater lowering}, language = {en} } @misc{OuldBabaPethHornetal., author = {Ould Baba, Hamoudy and Peth, Stephan and Horn, Rainer and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Quantification of mechanical strength and sliding stability of an artificial water catchment (Chicken Creek)}, series = {Soil \& Tillage Research}, volume = {146}, journal = {Soil \& Tillage Research}, issn = {0167-1987}, doi = {10.1016/j.still.2014.05.013}, pages = {66 -- 78}, abstract = {Natural shear forces due to gravity along inclined terrain surfaces are controlled by the inclination of the terrain, material composition and its mechanical properties, stratification and hydraulic stress states. Both shear forces and shear strength under a given inclination of the terrain surface strongly depend on the interaction between mechanical and hydraulic stresses. These internal conditions as well as the interactions between these various components are fundamentals in all nonplanar regions under arable, forest or grassland management and they dominate also under various geoscientific aims. Generally, soil creep is a slow soil movement downslope under gravity. It can occur even on gentle slopes when the shear forces exceed the shear strength of the soil. Deposited material on slopes is more sensitive to such movements than well-developed soils due to the absence of a pronounced soil structure, site and management dependent hydraulic properties and functions, which results in low soil strength. We applied the described measurements and the modelling approaches to investigate and to analyse the stability of an artificially constructed water catchment (Chicken Creek) in the mining district of Cottbus/Germany, where glacial sand was deposited above a clay layer with an inclination of about 3.5\%. At the lower part of the catchment, an impermeable barrier (claywall)was positioned transversally to the main slope. Mechanical and hydraulic parameters of the soil layers were determined on soil samples taken from the field site. The measured values were inserted as input parameters for the finite element model (Plaxis 2D) to simulate soil movements and their effect on the stability of the catchment. The obtained results showed that the kind of construction negatively affected the physical low soil strength (low precompression stress) although the bulk density was very high (1.7-1.9 g/cm3 for the sandy material). Hydraulic conductivity revealed a significant anisotropy with higher hydraulic conductivity values in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, finite element results showed that the design of the newly formed landscape remains weak concerning mass movements too. The high water table in the sandy material in conjunction with low soil strength enhances the downslope movement and increases the shear stress near the clay wall at the lower end of the slope, which finally results in soil creep processes. These results also proof that such geotechnical and modelling approach is also suitable to validate or to predict mass movements and the internal processes responsible for these internal mass erosion.}, language = {en} } @misc{PlieningerBensHuettl, author = {Plieninger, Tobias and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Perspective of bioenergy for agriculture and rural areas}, series = {Outlook on Agriculture}, volume = {35}, journal = {Outlook on Agriculture}, number = {2}, issn = {0030-7270}, doi = {10.5367/000000006777641624}, pages = {123 -- 127}, language = {en} } @misc{BensBuczkoSieberetal., author = {Bens, Oliver and Buczko, Uwe and Sieber, Sonja and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Spatial variability of O layer thickness and humus forms under different pine beech-forest transformation stages in NE Germany}, series = {Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science}, volume = {169}, journal = {Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science}, number = {1}, issn = {1522-2624}, doi = {10.1002/jpln.200521734}, pages = {5 -- 15}, language = {en} } @misc{BuczkoBensHuettl, author = {Buczko, Uwe and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Water infiltration and hydrophobicity in forest soils of a pine-beech transformation chronosequence}, series = {Journal of Hydrology}, volume = {331}, journal = {Journal of Hydrology}, number = {3-4}, doi = {10.1016/j.jhydrol.2006.05.023}, pages = {383 -- 395}, language = {en} } @misc{BuczkoBens, author = {Buczko, Uwe and Bens, Oliver}, title = {Assessing soil hydrophobicity and its variability through the soil profile using two different methods}, series = {Soil Science Society of America Journal}, volume = {70}, journal = {Soil Science Society of America Journal}, number = {3}, issn = {1435-0661}, doi = {10.2136/sssaj2005.0183}, pages = {718 -- 727}, language = {en} } @misc{GruenewaldBrandtSchneideretal., author = {Gr{\"u}newald, Holger and Brandt, Barbara K. Biological soil crust (BSC) patches may have smaller sizes, and ecophysiological, hydrological as well as pedological processes may be heterogeneously distributed within this level of resolution. A ground-based NDVI imaging procedure using low-cost equipment (Olympus Camedia 5000z digital camera equipped with a Hoya R72 infrared filter) was developed in this study to fill this gap at the level of field research, where carrying costly and bulky equipment to remote locations is often the limiting factor for data collection. Method principle and field data are presented, and the field experiment was deepened comparing NDVI measurements and CO2 turnover of soil crust samples in the laboratory, backing the reliability of the approach. A commercially available colour rendition chart with known red (600-700 nm) and NIR (800-900 nm) reflectances was placed into each scene and used for calibration purposes on a per-image basis. Generation of NDVI images involved (i) determination of red and NIR reflectances from the pixel values of the red and NIR channels, respectively, and (ii) calculation and imaging of the NDVI, where NDVI values of -1 to +1 were mapped to grey values of 0 to 255. The correlation between NDVI values retrieved from these images and NDVI values determined using field spectrometry was close (r2 = 0.91), the 95\% confidence interval amounted to 0.10 NDVI units. The pixel resolution was 0.8 mm in the field and 0.2 mm in the laboratory, but can still be improved significantly with closer distance to the crust or with higher camera resolution. NDVI values obtained using the new method were related to the net CO2 uptake of BSCs, where both slope and correlation coefficient of the respective regression function conformed with literature data. Geostatistical analysis revealed that both spatial variability of net CO2 uptake as well as size of individual hot spots of this parameter increased with crust development. The latter never exceeded 4 mm in the investigated crusts, which points to the necessity of high resolution imaging for linking remote sensing with ecophysiology. Perspectively, the new method could be used for field monitoring of both biological soil crusts and vascular vegetation.}, language = {en} } @misc{FischerVesteSchaafetal., author = {Fischer, Thomas and Veste, Maik and Schaaf, Wolfgang and D{\"u}mig, Alexander and K{\"o}gel-Knabner, Ingrid and Wiehe, Wolfgang and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Initial pedogenesis in a topsoil crust 3 years after construction of an artificial water catchment in Brandenburg, NE Germany}, series = {Biogeochemistry}, volume = {101}, journal = {Biogeochemistry}, number = {1-3}, issn = {1573-515X}, doi = {10.1007/s10533-010-9464-z}, pages = {165 -- 176}, abstract = {Cyanobacteria and green algae present in biological soil crusts are able to colonize mineral substrates even under extreme environmental conditions. As pioneer organisms, they play a key role during the first phases of habitat colonization. A characteristic crust was sampled 3 years after installation of the artificial water catchment "Chicken creek", thus representing an early successional stage of ecosystem development. Mean annual rainfall and temperature were 559 mm and 9.3°C, respectively. We combined scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and infrared (FTIR) microscopy to study the contact zone of algal and cyanobacterial mucilage with soil minerals in an undisturbed biological soil crust and in the subjacent sandy substrate. The crust was characterized by an approximately 50 μm thick surface layer, where microorganisms resided and where mineral deposition was trapped, and by an approximately 2.5 mm thick lower crust where mineral particles were stabilized by organo-mineral structures. SEM/EDX microscopy was used to determine the spatial distribution of elements, organic compounds and minerals were identified using FTIR microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The concentration of organic carbon in the crust was about twice as much as in the parent material. Depletion of Fe, Al and Mn in the lower crust and in the subjacent 5 mm compared to the geological substrate was observed. This could be interpreted as the initial phase of podzolization. Existence of bridging structures between mineral particles of the lower crust, containing phyllosilicates, Fe compounds and organic matter (OM), may indicate the formation of organo-mineral associations. pH decreased from 8.1 in the original substrate to 5.1 on the crust surface 3 years after construction, pointing to rapid weathering of carbonates.
