Most ecosystem studies so far have been carried out in mature systems. Only limited knowledge exists on the very initial phase of ecosystem development. Concepts on the development of ecosystems are often based on assumptions and extrapolations with respect to structure-process interactions in the initial stage. To characterize the effect of this initial phase on structure and functioning of ecosystems in later stages, it is necessary to disentangle the close interaction of spatial and temporal patterns of ecosystem structural assemblages with processes of ecosystem development. The study of initial, less complex systems could help to better identify and characterize coupled patterns and processes. This paper gives an overview of concepts for the initial development of different ecosystem compartments and identifies open questions and research gaps. The artificial catchment site "Chicken Creek" is introduced as a new research approach to investigate these patterns and processes of initial ecosystem development under defined boundary conditions. The Penman equation, which was developed for saturated surfaces, was modified for unsaturated surfaces and used for prediction of dewfall rates. The levels of surface saturation required for this approach were predicted using the water retention functions and the thicknesses of the BSCs. During a single event, dewfall increased with crust development from 0.08 kg m-2 for the initial substrate to 0.10, 0.20 and 0.25 kg m-2 for crusts stages 1 to 3, respectively, which was well reflected by the model response. The suggested mechanism of dew formation involves a delay in water saturation in near-surface soil pores and EPS where the crusts were thicker and where the water capacity was high, resulting in elevated vapor flux towards the surface. The results also indicate that the amount of dewfall was too low to observe water flow into deeper soil. Analysis of the soil water retention curves revealed that, despite the sandy mineral matrix, moist crusts with clogged by swollen EPS pores exhibited a clay-like behavior. It is hypothesized that BSCs gain double benefit from suppressing their competitors by runoff generation and from improving their water supply by dew collection. Despite higher amounts of dew, the water availability to the crust community decreases with crust development, which may be compensated by ecophysiological adaptation of crust organisms, and which may further suppress higher vegetation or mosses.}, language = {en} } @misc{GerwinRaabBiemeltetal., author = {Gerwin, Werner and Raab, Thomas and Biemelt, Detlef and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {The artificial water catchment "Chicken Creek" as an observatory for critical zone processes and structures}, series = {Hydrology and Earth System Sciences}, volume = {6}, journal = {Hydrology and Earth System Sciences}, number = {2}, issn = {1812-2116}, doi = {10.5194/hessd-6-1769-2009}, pages = {1769 -- 1795}, language = {en} } @misc{ElmerBachmannGutschetal., author = {Elmer, Michael and Bachmann, Ute and Gutsch, Martin and Schr{\"o}der, Jens and B{\"a}ucker, Ernst and Lange, Mike and Clauder, Lothar and Bens, Oliver and Suckow, Felicitas and K{\"a}tzel, Ralf and Bues, Claus-Thomas and Frommhold, Heinz and Sonntag, Herbert and Fischer, Thomas and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {OakChain: Eichen-Kiefern-Mischbest{\"a}nde im Spannungsfeld von Klimawandel, Waldumbau und internationalem Holzmarkt}, series = {Forst und Holz}, volume = {64}, journal = {Forst und Holz}, number = {7/8}, issn = {0932-9315}, pages = {26 -- 29}, language = {de} } @incollection{HuettlBensSchneider, author = {H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F. and Bens, Oliver and Schneider, Bernd Uwe}, title = {Waldnutzung, Waldsch{\"a}den und Waldumbau}, language = {de} } @incollection{SchaeferBensWahl, author = {Sch{\"a}fer, B. and Bens, Oliver and Wahl, Niels Arne}, title = {Pedo-hydrologische Wirkung des {\"o}kologischen Waldumbaus auf die Wasserretention in B{\"o}den}, language = {de} } @misc{ElmerGutschBachmannetal., author = {Elmer, Michael and Gutsch, Martin and Bachmann, Ute and Bens, Oliver and Suckow, Felicitas and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Der Einfluss des Umbaus von Kiefern-Reinbest{\"a}nden in Traubeneichen-Kiefern-Mischbest{\"a}nden auf Standortqualit{\"a}t und Bestandesklima}, series = {Forst und Holz}, volume = {64}, journal = {Forst und Holz}, issn = {0932-9315}, pages = {12 -- 17}, language = {de} } @article{FischerBensHuettl, author = {Fischer, H. and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Changes in humus form, humus stock and soil organic matter distribution as effected by forest transformation in Northeastern lowlands of Germany.}, language = {en} } @incollection{BensBuczkoWahletal., author = {Bens, Oliver and Buczko, Uwe and Wahl, Niels Arne and W{\"o}llecke, Britta and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Wasserretentionspotential in forstlich und landwirtschaftlich genutzten B{\"o}den}, language = {de} } @inproceedings{KapplerKaiserGanzenmuelleretal., author = {Kappler, Christoph and Kaiser, Knut and Ganzenm{\"u}ller, Raphael and K{\"u}ster, Mathias and Nicolay, Alexander and F{\"u}lling, Alexander and Bens, Oliver and Raab, Thomas}, title = {A review of geochronological data from northeastern Germany: evaluating late Quaternary soil formation and land surface dynamics}, series = {3rd Annual ICLEA Workshop 2014, Dynamics of Climate and Landscape Evolution of Cultural Landscapes in the Northern Central European Lowlands since the Last Ice Age}, booktitle = {3rd Annual ICLEA Workshop 2014, Dynamics of Climate and Landscape Evolution of Cultural Landscapes in the Northern Central European Lowlands since the Last Ice Age}, editor = {Schwab, Markus J. and Theuerkauf, Martin and Brauer, Achim and Wilmking, Martin and Lampe, Reinhard}, publisher = {GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences}, address = {Potsdam}, doi = {10.2312/GFZ.b103-14028}, pages = {43}, language = {en} } @misc{RodionovNiiAnnangFischeretal., author = {Rodionov, Andrei and Nii-Annang, Seth and Fischer, Thomas and Gattinger, Andreas and Bens, Oliver and Raab, Thomas and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Cross-linked polyacrylates in post-mining substrates: persistence and effects on plant growth}, series = {Soil Use and Management}, volume = {30}, journal = {Soil Use and Management}, number = {1}, issn = {1475-2743}, doi = {10.1111/sum.12103}, pages = {78 -- 87}, abstract = {Application of hydrophilic polymers composed of cross-linked polyacrylate can improve soil water-holding capacity and accelerate the restoration of post-mining substrates. In contrast to autumn application, the incorporation of the polymer enhanced the sequestration of plant-derived carbon in the soil, which was reflected by a significant increase in the concentration of a lignin marker. Attenuated total reflexion-Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR) and total elemental contents in the applied polymer suggested an intensive cation exchange between the polymer framework and the soil-forming substrate. In this region the largest brown coal (lignite) mining area of Germany is located. Lignite mining activities lead to major disturbances of the landscape. Recultivation efforts attempt to regenerate mining areas for agricultural land use options. The geological "parent" material is of saaleian origin, has a sandy texture and was excavated from several meters depths before mining and is now used for recultivating the excavated area. Consequently, it is free of recent soil organic carbon. The substrate itself is unstructured. The partly wet or dry substrate is subjected to strong mechanical stresses during the excavation, deposition, refilling and levelling processes throughout the year. This practice leads to more or less compacted soils/substrates which may result in small yields of agricultural crops. In this context we investigate the effect of different organic soil additives in combination with different recultivation crop rotations on the development of soil structure for improved agricultural land use. Our experimental site has been heaped up and levelled off in 2006 and 2007. On each of the 24 experimental sub areas undisturbed soil samples have been taken to characterise the substrates according to their mechanical and hydraulic parameters and to determine the scattering of these parameters on a site that is assumed to be recultivated as homogenously as possible. First results of our ongoing experimental study indicate that the soil physical properties such as texture, bulk density, precompression stress, air permeability and saturated hydraulic conductivity are not identical on each of the 24 subplots. The soil physical properties behave differently in relation to each other. Both shear forces and shear strength under a given inclination of the terrain surface strongly depend on the interaction between mechanical and hydraulic stresses. These internal conditions as well as the interactions between these various components are fundamentals in all nonplanar regions under arable, forest or grassland management and they dominate also under various geoscientific aims. Generally, soil creep is a slow soil movement downslope under gravity. It can occur even on gentle slopes when the shear forces exceed the shear strength of the soil. Deposited material on slopes is more sensitive to such movements than well-developed soils due to the absence of a pronounced soil structure, site and management dependent hydraulic properties and functions, which results in low soil strength. We applied the described measurements and the modelling approaches to investigate and to analyse the stability of an artificially constructed water catchment (Chicken Creek) in the mining district of Cottbus/Germany, where glacial sand was deposited above a clay layer with an inclination of about 3.5\%. At the lower part of the catchment, an impermeable barrier (claywall)was positioned transversally to the main slope. Mechanical and hydraulic parameters of the soil layers were determined on soil samples taken from the field site. The measured values were inserted as input parameters for the finite element model (Plaxis 2D) to simulate soil movements and their effect on the stability of the catchment. The obtained results showed that the kind of construction negatively affected the physical low soil strength (low precompression stress) although the bulk density was very high (1.7-1.9 g/cm3 for the sandy material). Hydraulic conductivity revealed a significant anisotropy with higher hydraulic conductivity values in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, finite element results showed that the design of the newly formed landscape remains weak concerning mass movements too. The high water table in the sandy material in conjunction with low soil strength enhances the downslope movement and increases the shear stress near the clay wall at the lower end of the slope, which finally results in soil creep processes. These results also proof that such geotechnical and modelling approach is also suitable to validate or to predict mass movements and the internal processes responsible for these internal mass erosion.}, language = {en} } @misc{PlieningerBensHuettl, author = {Plieninger, Tobias and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Perspective of bioenergy for agriculture and rural areas}, series = {Outlook on Agriculture}, volume = {35}, journal = {Outlook on Agriculture}, number = {2}, issn = {0030-7270}, doi = {10.5367/000000006777641624}, pages = {123 -- 127}, language = {en} } @misc{BensBuczkoSieberetal., author = {Bens, Oliver and Buczko, Uwe and Sieber, Sonja and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Spatial variability of O layer thickness and humus forms under different pine beech-forest transformation stages in NE Germany}, series = {Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science}, volume = {169}, journal = {Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science}, number = {1}, issn = {1522-2624}, doi = {10.1002/jpln.200521734}, pages = {5 -- 15}, language = {en} } @misc{BuczkoBensHuettl, author = {Buczko, Uwe and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Water infiltration and hydrophobicity in forest soils of a pine-beech transformation chronosequence}, series = {Journal of Hydrology}, volume = {331}, journal = {Journal of Hydrology}, number = {3-4}, doi = {10.1016/j.jhydrol.2006.05.023}, pages = {383 -- 395}, language = {en} } @misc{BuczkoBens, author = {Buczko, Uwe and Bens, Oliver}, title = {Assessing soil hydrophobicity and its variability through the soil profile using two different methods}, series = {Soil Science Society of America Journal}, volume = {70}, journal = {Soil Science Society of America Journal}, number = {3}, issn = {1435-0661}, doi = {10.2136/sssaj2005.0183}, pages = {718 -- 727}, language = {en} } @misc{GruenewaldBrandtSchneideretal., author = {Gr{\"u}newald, Holger and Brandt, Barbara K. Biological soil crust (BSC) patches may have smaller sizes, and ecophysiological, hydrological as well as pedological processes may be heterogeneously distributed within this level of resolution. A ground-based NDVI imaging procedure using low-cost equipment (Olympus Camedia 5000z digital camera equipped with a Hoya R72 infrared filter) was developed in this study to fill this gap at the level of field research, where carrying costly and bulky equipment to remote locations is often the limiting factor for data collection. Method principle and field data are presented, and the field experiment was deepened comparing NDVI measurements and CO2 turnover of soil crust samples in the laboratory, backing the reliability of the approach. A commercially available colour rendition chart with known red (600-700 nm) and NIR (800-900 nm) reflectances was placed into each scene and used for calibration purposes on a per-image basis. Generation of NDVI images involved (i) determination of red and NIR reflectances from the pixel values of the red and NIR channels, respectively, and (ii) calculation and imaging of the NDVI, where NDVI values of -1 to +1 were mapped to grey values of 0 to 255. The correlation between NDVI values retrieved from these images and NDVI values determined using field spectrometry was close (r2 = 0.91), the 95\% confidence interval amounted to 0.10 NDVI units. The pixel resolution was 0.8 mm in the field and 0.2 mm in the laboratory, but can still be improved significantly with closer distance to the crust or with higher camera resolution. NDVI values obtained using the new method were related to the net CO2 uptake of BSCs, where both slope and correlation coefficient of the respective regression function conformed with literature data. Geostatistical analysis revealed that both spatial variability of net CO2 uptake as well as size of individual hot spots of this parameter increased with crust development. The latter never exceeded 4 mm in the investigated crusts, which points to the necessity of high resolution imaging for linking remote sensing with ecophysiology. As pioneer organisms, they play a key role during the first phases of habitat colonization. A characteristic crust was sampled 3 years after installation of the artificial water catchment "Chicken creek", thus representing an early successional stage of ecosystem development. Mean annual rainfall and temperature were 559 mm and 9.3°C, respectively. We combined scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and infrared (FTIR) microscopy to study the contact zone of algal and cyanobacterial mucilage with soil minerals in an undisturbed biological soil crust and in the subjacent sandy substrate. The crust was characterized by an approximately 50 μm thick surface layer, where microorganisms resided and where mineral deposition was trapped, and by an approximately 2.5 mm thick lower crust where mineral particles were stabilized by organo-mineral structures. SEM/EDX microscopy was used to determine the spatial distribution of elements, organic compounds and minerals were identified using FTIR microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The concentration of organic carbon in the crust was about twice as much as in the parent material. Depletion of Fe, Al and Mn in the lower crust and in the subjacent 5 mm compared to the geological substrate was observed. This could be interpreted as the initial phase of podzolization. Existence of bridging structures between mineral particles of the lower crust, containing phyllosilicates, Fe compounds and organic matter (OM), may indicate the formation of organo-mineral associations. pH decreased from 8.1 in the original substrate to 5.1 on the crust surface 3 years after construction, pointing to rapid weathering of carbonates. On very young landforms physical and chemical properties of soils play a major role for the further evolution of the developing ecosystem as well as the landforms itself. Less is known about the very first alterations of physical parameters in accordance to different land uses and recultivation practices. Our study deals with the agricultural recultivation of post lignite mining areas in Lusatia, East Germany. The sandy substrate used for recultivation stems from depths of several meters and is therefore free of recent soil organic matter. The substrate itself is unstructured. After it has been excavated and transported on conveyor belts to the recultivation site, it is piled up to dams of a height of 1-4 m and levelled off with heavy crawlers. During these processes the substrate is subjected to strong mechanical stresses. This practice induces compaction which causes decreasing yields of agricultural crops to a certain extent. In this context we are investigating the effect of different organic soil additives in combination with different recultivation crop rotations on the development of soil structure for improved agricultural land use. Our experimental site has recently been heaped up and levelled off. On the 25 experimental sub areas 2175 undisturbed soil samples were taken out of three soil depths to characterize initial physical properties before any recultivation measures have been applied,. We present laboratory results of this status-quo sampling. The results indicate that the site is very heterogeneous in terms of mechanical stability, bulk density, total pore volume, saturated hydraulic conductivity and air permeability. Moreover, our results show that bulk density is not an appropriate parameter to derive soil functions, e.g. permeability or stability. Additionally we found that even in areas of bulk densities > 1.8 g/cm3 and with an inclination < 2 \% impressive run-off and gully erosion developed during heavy rainfall events. We conclude that initial processes altering soil physical parameters play a major role for the landform evolution within the first 12 months after dumping. Further studies should reveal the mid-term impact of organic additives on the soils after 7 yrs.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{RodionovBensTrimbornetal., author = {Rodionov, Andrei and Bens, Oliver and Trimborn, Manfred and Wagner, S. and Schneider, Bernd Uwe and Raab, Thomas and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Use of commercial soil amendments in initial soils (I) - Impact on yield and basic soil characteristics}, series = {EGU General Assembly 2009, Vienna, Austria, 19 - 24 April 2009}, booktitle = {EGU General Assembly 2009, Vienna, Austria, 19 - 24 April 2009}, publisher = {European Geophysical Society}, address = {Katlenburg-Lindau}, language = {en} } @article{SchaeferBuczkoBensetal., author = {Sch{\"a}fer, B. and Buczko, Uwe and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {Einfluss differenzierter forstlicher Bewirtschaftungsweisen auf die Wasserspeicherf{\"a}higkeit sandiger B{\"o}den NO-Brandenburgs}, language = {de} } @article{BensBuczkoSchaefer, author = {Bens, Oliver and Buczko, Uwe and Sch{\"a}fer, B.}, title = {Markoporosit{\"a}t und Infiltrationseigenschaften von Ackerb{\"o}den unter differenzierten Bewirtschaftungsweisen}, language = {de} } @inproceedings{FischerVesteEiseleetal., author = {Fischer, Thomas and Veste, Maik and Eisele, Andreas and Bens, Oliver and Spyra, Wolfgang and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {High resolution mapping of Normalized Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) of biological soil crusts}, series = {EGU General Assembly 2012, held 22-27 April, 2012 in Vienna}, booktitle = {EGU General Assembly 2012, held 22-27 April, 2012 in Vienna}, publisher = {European Geophysical Society}, address = {Katlenburg-Lindau}, language = {en} } @article{MorgenrothKretschmerScharfetal., author = {Morgenroth, Gerhard and Kretschmer, Wolfgang and Scharf, Andreas and Uhl, Thomas and Fettweis, Ulrich and Bens, Oliver and H{\"u}ttl, Reinhard F.}, title = {14C measurement of soil in post-mining landscapes.}, doi = {10.1016/j.nimb.2004.04.105}, language = {en} } @article{RumbergerMuenzenbergerBens, author = {Rumberger, M.
