This paper examines the assumptions and recommendations of Irwin Hoffman on self-disclosure and Jay Greenberg on the danger – safety balance in the therapeutic relationship. On the basis of this examination, alternatives to the ideas of Hoffman and Greenberg are offered for consideration.
