Alienation is characterized by a sense of distrust, a lack of intimacy with others, and an aversion to self-knowledge. This condition results in overconformity, apathy, and depressed aspirations. Positive mental health involves a positive sense of identity, social ties with others and with values, and a sense of an ability to successfully act on wants and beliefs. Psychological reactions to social structures as a cause of alienation are investigated through an examina-tion of the work of E. Erikson, E. FROMM, M. Seeman, and others. Included are examinations of neurosis, manic depression, schizophrenia, and character disorders. The relationship between social structure and personality change is explored as it relates to working-class groups.
