Erich Fromm
(1976)

(1976)
Alienation is characterized by a sense of distrust, a lack of intimacy with others, and an aversion to self-knowledge. This condition results in overconformity, apathy, and depressed aspirations. Positive mental health involves a positive sense of identity, social ties with others and with values, and a sense of an ability to successfully act on wants and beliefs. Psychological reactions to social structures as a cause of alienation are investigated through an examina-tion of the work of E. Erikson, E. FROMM, M. Seeman, and others. Included are examinations of neurosis, manic depression, schizophrenia, and character disorders. The relationship between social structure and personality change is explored as it relates to working-class groups.
Darwin y Copérnico

Empirically tested Jung's hypothesis that dreams have a compensatory function. Three dream reports for each of 62 male college juniors and seniors were rated by 5 judges on 15 personality dimensions and compared with scores on the same dimensions as measured by the EPPS and the Adjective Check List (ACL). Six EPPS scales and 10 ACL scales correlated significantly with their appropriate dream rating scales. Contrary to Jung's assumptions, all significant correlations were positive, and thus consistent with the theories of A. Adler, E. FROMM, and C. Hall, who do not consider dream content to be substantially different from conscious functioning.

Sigmund Freud was a self-proclaimed atheist and most religious ideologies were hostile toward him. Currently, however, many thinkers see a common spiritual purpose between Christianity and psychotherapy. The association between religion and Freudianism is particularly intense in the United States. Homo psychologicus is discussed versus homo spiritualis. Contemporary followers of Freud, eg, Erich FROMM and Carl Jung, have largely abandoned Freud's atheistic stance. Jung criticized the orthodox Catholic Church, claiming that striving toward a transcendental God does not orient man toward development of a fully mature personality. FROMM distinguished between authoritarian, destructive religion, and humanistic religion-with its main goal of man's self-realization. Christian theologians are beginning to view Christian morality, as it existed in the Anglo-Saxon countries, as essentially negative in character. Also discussed are Jesus as the first psychologist and changing conceptions of sin.
