This essay proposes to examine a limited number of critical assessments regarding the scientific status of psychoanalysis with reference to intents and purposes, claims and disclaimers, contrasting views of what constitutes a science and the nature of scientific thinking and how these might apply to psychoanalysis epistemologically. It assumes a certain degree of familiarity with criticisms that have been leveled against psychoanalysis from those who insist on absolutist testing for what some call true science, particularly on the part of those who are not practitioners of the art. It wonders about the concern with scientizing by those who actually practice it, or value it in some way or another. It suggests an open minded approach without premature or even warranted closure on the subject of human beings and of ways of getting to know them, let alone understanding them and perhaps being of help to them.
Johan Jakob Bachofen (1815-1887) was a Swiss anthropologist and sociologist whose 1861 book, Mother Right: An Investigation of the Religious and Juridical Character of Matriarchy in the Ancient World is best known for his radical claims that matriarchy preceded patriarchy, and that matriarchy is the source of human society, religion, and morality. Scholars have acknowledged Bachofen’s influence on a long list of writers, including but not limited to: Lewis Henry Morgan, Friedrich Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Friederich Engels, Karl Marx, Erich Fromm, Joseph Campbelll, Emile Durkheim, Carl Gustav Jung, Thorstein Veblen, Ferdinand Tonnies, and Pitirim Sorokin. The focus of my thesis is to bring attention to Bachofen’s influence on the early sociologists (Engels, Durkheim, Tonnies, Sorokin), and more importantly, on the later sociologists and other social scientists whom these early sociologists in turn influenced, including: David Riesman, Talcott Parsons, and Jean Baudrillard.
This thesis attempts to advance the underappreciated thought of Erich Fromm as both a crucial contribution to twentieth century intellectual history and a potentially pivotal point from which to transcend current theoretical impasses. In particular, I argue that Fromm's radical humanism can participate in the rejuvenation of contemporary social theory, which is still largely constrained by the dual reductionism of positivism and poststructuralism, and that a return to it will encourage renewed theorising of, and empirical engagement with, the connections that obtain between the >psychological< and the >social<, the >essential< and the >constructed<, and the >is< and the >ought<. I try to show that Fromm's qualified essentialism and ethical normativism are sensible, viable, and desirable, and that they, coupled with his analytic social psychology, which is based on his underlying humanism and elaborated through a unique fusion of Marx and Freud, provide the basis for the development of practical strategies to realise humanism in the world. Perhaps above all, I try to show that there is a deceptive complexity and sophistication to Fromm's ideas, which are all too often taken as simple and naive.
The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the influence of the social unconscious on human beings in a future context. In psychoanalyst Erich Fromm's view, the social unconscious refers to Individuals who are afraid of being separated from the society they live in, they often adapt and distort their human needs to meet the requirements of our social system. However, with the strengthening of personality and self-awareness in our present society, how will the relationship between the social subconscious and people's self-awareness change in the future? This is the key issue of this thesis. In the first part, by studying the definition of the social unconscious and related works, this thesis tries to understand the root cause of the influence of the social unconscious and how it affects people's behavior and decision-making. In the second part, this thesis makes an in-depth study of Cyberpunk and objective imagery in related works, revealing that Cyberpunk is a projection of the real world, and clues for many problems in the real world can be found in the Cyberpunk world. In the third part, this thesis explores the changes in people's consciousness in the Cyberpunk world. Finally, this thesis concludes people will not be rid of the influence of the social unconscious whether in the real world or the future world. Even as people's self-awareness is constantly enhanced, self-awareness and social unconscious will always exist as contradictory to one another.
The bachelor´s thesis describes the philosophy of three important philosophers Erich Fromm, Victor Emanuel Frankl and Albert Camus. The work is divided into four chapters, in each of them I always deal with one specific problem from the point of view of all these philosophers. At the end of each chapter there is some conclusion and a summary of these thoughts as well as findings of similar characters of their philosophy. The first chapter is devoted to the problem of authentic way of the human existence. There are presented the basic features of Frankl´s, Fromm´s and Camus´ philosophy. The second chapter deals with the topic of freedom, primarily, whether the absolute freedom possible is or is not. The following chapter talks about the issue of human society and its impact on a human. The last chapter describes the problem of death and suicide. Whether these authors accept death as the end of the human life or whether they accept suicide as the solution of the human life. In conclusion, I tried to summarize the similar points of philosophy of these authors.
The aim of my paper is to introduce individual theories of aggression, which are divided according to the factors having influence on human aggressive behaviour and acting. Basically, the literature is chosen from the works of Erich Fromm, Sigmund Freud and Konrad Lorenz. This choice enabled to divide the issue into three basic areas, that is: biological, psychological and philosophical ones. All three areas are elaborated further by the issue of the child aggression origin, in subchapters. The impact of aggression on society is also emphasized by Hannah Arendt, who is trying to specify roots of social aggression, and is looking for individual and social responsibility for aggression. The theory, derived from those researches plus from subsequent modern psychological concept, attempts to reveal causes of aggression. Easier understanding of aggression causes would enable to influence or eliminate factors causing/strengthening aggression, either caused by society or by ourselves. Such understanding is the aim of all scientists, who sacrificed their lives to research of aggression, a phenomenon so dangerous for human beings.
Though suicide in American literature seems to belong to the twentieth century, core patterns of suicide had already emerged in the nineteenth-century novel. Five suicide themes are analyzed in selected novels from 1798 to 1909, with chapter paradigms drawing on an array of historical, cultural, and social-scientific sources and medical theories from 1792 to the present. Chapter one argues that Charles Brockden Brown's dramatization of the murder-suicide sequence in Wieland (1798), filtered through semi-fictional experimentation on suicide and scientific readings in Erasmus Darwin, maps the new nation's violence, and prefigures contemporary theory about suicidal pathology. Chapter two identifies Nathaniel Hawthorne's Blithedale Romance (1852) as a >suicide-survivor novel< or >Uberlebendenroman.< Erich FROMM's insights about self-destruction and characterological necrophilia, and contemporary theory about suicide survivorship, structure my analysis of how suicide unsettles mode as the arhythmical journey of the survivor's healing and philosophical investigations are traced. Chapter three explores >symbolic-age crisis,< the modern term underscoring what Dr. Henry Morselli perceived in the 1890s: suicides often occur during failed developmental transitions. Such struggles in Rebecca Harding Davis's >Life in the Iron Mills< (1861), Stephen Crane's Maggie (1893), and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie (1900) parallel the post-Civil War growing pains of our country as social observers such as Jacob Riis and Henry and William James voiced fears about the >epidemic< of suicide. Chapter four probes the choice of a suicide method vis-a-vis its lethality in Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth (1905), which follows the author's excursion into problems of self-determination in the bedrugged upper echelons of society. Modern suicidologist Edwin S. Shneidman's rubrics of classification explain Lily Bart's gradual and ambivalent self-poisoning as a >subintentioned< suicide; nineteenth-century pharmacology on chloral hydrate (in the work of Drs. David H. Tuke and George Miller Beard, among others) provides historical context. Chapter five is also grounded in nineteenth-century cultural perspectives about suicide, evaluating gender-specific features in the suicide deaths of male and female artists in Henry James's Princess Casamassima (1886), Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899), and Jack London's Martin Eden (1909).
At the beginning of the 20th century, social sciences were institutionalized for the first time. While initially being a part of philosophical thinking, the promise of a scientific, objective interpretation of social phenomena granted social scientists a distinguished place within universities in Germany as well as in the USA. A larger focus on empirical research should guarantee that social science was indeed an independent endeavor, instead of a new form of social philosophy under another name. However, when analyzing the research of social scientists in the early 20th century, it is clear that ideological biases still prevailed and heavily influenced the interpretation of the collected empirical data. In this thesis, the problem of objectivity in social science and its relation to both theory and empirical research is addressed. As a case study, I have used the development of the social research of the members of the Frankfurt School in the period 1923-1950. Starting with a clear call for objectivity, over years it became clear that ideological bias was not easily removed from social science, especially at the background of the emergence and fall of the Weimar Republic and the establishment of the Nazi Regime. In my thesis, I argue that ideologically biased social science is not less empirically or more theoretically orientated than attempts to conduct objective social research, but have different interpretations of what it means to be empirical.
Poslední kapitola představuje problém smrti a sebevraždy.
This dissertation tries to prove that the so-called philosopher on the throne can be a better ruler not only than dictator but also than contemporary liberal democratic politician. Since the sixth century BC, when the human undertook a systematic and critical contemplation upon surrounding reality, she/he has begun to dream about political rulers to be guided in their doings by the imperative of reason. In principal, the higher level of spiritual culture characterized the rulers, the more likely their subjects were to live to a great age in relative peace. That is why for centuries it has been dreamed of a political system that is something like a kind of a sophocracy. The most complete picture of such a sovereign, which fulfilled dreams about a sage in the crown, was outlined by Plato in his State. In his point of view, as long as the lovers of wisdom will not have royal power in the states, or the rulers will not begin to love wisdom honestly, there is no help for states and for the human race. Nevertheless, over the centuries, authority was enforced mainly by physical strength and not by reason. It was not until the twentieth century that democracy brought freedom and equality of rights, thanks to which political power became more rational. Unfortunately, also contemporary liberal democracy is not free from fundamental contradictions that can bring about its collapse. The main contradiction is the increasingly smaller influence of citizens – who in the theory of democracy are the only legal sovereign – on political decision-making. This is accompanied by the enhancing influence of entities with no democratic legitimacy, e.g. global corporations that do not care about the common (public) good, but only about their own. These entities use the growing intellectual and ethical weakness of democratic politicians whose purpose is their own particular interest and not the happiness (good) of their citizens. This may indicate a slow system disintegration. For this reason liberal democracy needs politicians who are wise enough to realize this threat. Of all the people in the history of the world who led political communities, to the Platonic ideal in the highest degree (among others, like T. G. Masaryk and Á. Göncz) got closer the man who, paradoxically, never wanted to be a ruler. Václav Havel's thought is a critique of both Soviet post-totalitarianism and Western democracy. In his opinion both systems, though to a different degree, alienate a human trying to reduce her/him to the role of a machine's cog. Havel proposes that every citizen take individual and global responsibility for herself/himself and the whole world, because only in this way she/he can consciously exert real influence over political decisions. What is more, this is the only way to build a politics that aims – if possible – the happiness of every person. Havel realizes that in today's world this attitude is extremely impractical and very difficult to apply in everyday life. Nevertheless, he knows no better possibility.

The objective of this scientific research work is to develop the theme >Self - esteem and Development of Human Potential< in a psychoanalytical perspective. Within this proposal we intend to show the importance of this attribute in the life of the people mentioning the advantages of a healthy self-esteem as well as the losses of a deficit self-esteem. We will be discussing and evaluating the social influences in the formation and conservation of self-esteem, revealing that it is not born with the subject, but is formed through the first bonds and strengthened as the child finds favorable environments for its healthy development. We will look at the fact that every impression or internalized belief about inferiority comes from the interpretation of reality or the fantasy of rejection and abandonment, and that excesses or frustrations in excess in early childhood leave narcissistic wounds that can result in the existential void with reflection in the self esteem. We must prove that people with healthy self-esteem will be more courageous, bold, and confident, increasing the likelihood of being more assertive in their choices. We will look at the fact that there is enormous potential within each human being ready to be unveiled and utilized and the fertile ground by which the potential can manifest and develop is self-esteem. Finally, we must conclude that, in addition to being a daily achievement, self-esteem can be rescued at any moment, provided that one has a conscience, desire, attitude of change, courage and discipline.

The aim of this thesis is to present the Erich Fromm's psychoanalytic concept and determine the influence of his ideas in the contemporary society. Erich Pinchas Fromm was dealing with the psychology all his life. He was trying to use psychology as a tool of the development of the human mind and not only its scientific description. In his works, Fromm emphasizes a destructive and almost pathological influence of a modern company on human individuality, necessity of self-awareness and self-intrinsic value. The centre of his psychoanalytic analysis is a human being. Fromm tries, through detailed analysis, to show the negative side of the current civilization and also attempts to outline new opportunities of change. He criticizes the prevailing orientation on modus of ownership when a man blindly chases the power, wealth and popularity. The man pays a big toll for his egoistic avarice in the form of anxiety, fear and feeling of helplessness. Fromm in detail focuses on the aspects of human personality, such as love, freedom and human naturalness in his works. The essence of Fromm's psychoanalysis is the need to arouse people to change the current state of society, which Fromm considers essentially tragic. All the Erich Fromm's work is focused on a resurgence of human society and creation of ideal of a new man. Fromm was persuaded that the revival of society is possible and necessary. The key of this revival is primarily the change of individual mind. Fromm sees hope particularly in the self-reflection of the individual, who is able to free himself from illusions of his being and in the development unrepeatable uniqueness of real human being. The main contribution of Fromm's humanistic social psychology is to help a >sick< human being to restore inner moral values, which leads to an active and meaningful life.

The main theme of my Bachelor thesis is the individualization process in the work of Erich Fromm. I focus on the individualization process as a growth of human freedom and individual identity. The aim of this work is to show how the social, economic and religious changes of human society reflect the progress of the individualization process. I try to explain the connections between the progress of the individualization and human relationship to the nature, authority, means of production, religion social and economic structures. I especially focus on the connection between the individualization process and the origin of the capitalist market and Protestantism and its social, economic, political and religious effects on the society structure. I compare the theories of Erich Fromm and Max Weber to show that they share differences and similarities in their viewpoint on the origin and effects and efforts of the capitalist marketplace society and the protestant ethic. I also mention Fromm’s critical viewpoint which says that capitalist society causes conformity, which is contradiction to individuality.
Bachelor thesis interprets Erich Fromm’s view of man. A human being is determined by his nature. He has obtained and also inherited attributes. Everybody has his own character which is continuously formed by society which a human being lives in. Love is very important for a human. But it is hard to learn it, as we can see in present-day society and also in Fromm’s society at that time. This thesis also deals with Fromm’s differentiation of two modes of human being – mode to have, mode to be. Next chapter deals with destructiveness, as the opposite of love. Human is a creature who likes killing and enjoys his aggression. The freedom is also the main conception of Fromm’s thoughts. It causes a man´s powerlessness and fear. When a human being doesn’t have freedom then he feels relief and inner order. The last chapter deals with the suggestion of new society and new man by Erich Fromm. All is based on the mode to be which means a productive life.
This bachelor thesis deals with conception of various human aspects according to Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse. These aspects are freedom, society and human. In introduction is shortly introduced the Frankfurt school, both authors were its members and this school form them. There is mentioned freedom and her economic, religious and anthropological development in culture. Below is here shown directly evolution of human. Fromm and Marcuse go from Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx. In one chapter Fromm shows us an evolution of human character and Marcuse analyses evolution of Ego, which has to fight with Id and Superego. Chapter about society more deal with capitalism and there authors go from aforementioned Karl Marx. Fromm presents his conception of mood to have and mood to be. Marcuse shows us a technical progress in industrial society. In conclusion will be compared theory of both philosophers and it will be examined their usability at the present time.
The main topic of this thesis is to compare the concept of freedom of three major thinkers of the twentieth century – Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm and Zygmunt Bauman. The work consists in an attempt to find differences in approach of mentioned thinkers and in approach in individual fields to which they are classified i.e. psychology, sociology, and philosophy. The work is gradually focused on several aspects of freedom, while the majority of interpretation focuses on the modern form of freedom and finds its credibility for the modern man. The thesis also highlights the main features of freedom and its current ambivalent character. Freedom is interpreted here as a phenomenon which is an essential part of society. The modern age is characterized by a completely different freedom from the previous period and as part of a new society must be explained from a different perspective. Freedom in Freud relates to its interpretation from the perspective of human inborn instincts and biologically conditioned man who is forced to live in a civilized society that restrains him. Freud considers culture to be despotic on one side, full of cultural norms and regulations, which do not allow people to act based on their will. On the other hand he is aware that without certain limits total anarchy would prevail in the world. Fromm to certain extent distances himself from Freud's theory of instinct-driven man, whose naturalness makes him to meet the needs associated with libido saturation, and embeds freedom in the broader social standards and historical coherence. Fromm proceeds from the time since the man was not a single individual to a modern industrial society in which individualism is the main theme and freedom seems to be an ambiguous phenomenon. With the rise of capitalism the man gained freedom to decide but on the other hand he began to feel helpless and alone. According to Fromm man is determined by culture and social motivation drives him. Freedom is possible in a society where every individual and his growth and happiness is primary objective and purpose.
Fromm´s theory is followed by contemporary sociologist Zygmunt Bauman who understands freedom as ambivalently as his predecessor. In a capitalist society almost everyone of us is free, we have a choice of many options, which brings Fromm´s theory is followed by contemporary sociologist Zygmunt Bauman who understands freedom as ambivalently as his predecessor. In a capitalist society almost everyone of us is free, we have a choice of many options, which brings discomfort associated with the act of decision-making. In this sense he has in mind a society that has been in the last few decades radically transformed. When he talks about consumer freedom he thinks of present form of capitalism that was transformed from production stage to consumption stage. So consumer freedom, which depends on market, dominates today´s entire society.
The conception of love in the Erich Fromm´s research tries to explain love from the point of view of his personality and through his work called The Art of Loving. The subject of this bachelor thesis is the Fromm´ s conception of the love compared to psychological and sociobiological explanations. Erich Fromm (1900-1980) received PhD in psychology from the University of Heidelberg in 1922. He worked with the Marx´s social concepts which he linked up with the psychological findings taken from Freud. The acquired knowledge was then applied to Fromm´s research of love. According to Fromm, love has many different images from the mother love, brother love, erotic love, self-love to the love to God. In the following chapters, the same analogical explanations of love are explained but from the sociobiological and psychological point of views. The sociobiology is science that supposes that the man was born to the world because his selfish genes wanted to. The only task the man has in his being is to pass on his genes to the next generation. Thus the categories of love are presented from this point of view. It is totally understandable that many people refuse the idea of just passing on the genes to the next generation as the only goal of their beings. The conception of love from the sociobiological point of view differs a lot from the Fromm´s understanding of love. However, the psychological views are shades into the Fromm´s views as it is influenced by his psychological education. Psychological conception of love describes the love according to the today´s psychologist views. There are three main views of love described in the bachelor thesis. It is not possible to decide if one is better than the other one. Psychology describes love as an emotional relationship which is characterized by the wide emotionality. On the contrary the sociobiology is science that lacks the emotions and its views is influenced by the evolution and biology. Although the impact of psychology is significant in Fromm´s works the sociology can also be identified. Each of the conceptions of love – Fromm´s, sociobiological or psychological prefers its own approach.
The book deals with one of the main leitmotivs of contemporary humanities – the criticism of Cartesian duality of subject and object. To define the ideas expressing this criticism the author uses the philosophical metaphor of >non-Cartesian coordinates<. By the application of this metaphor the author aims at showing how two configurations of these ideas, neostructuralism of A. J. Greimas and neopsychoanalysis of E. FROMM, can become the coordinates for characterizing other non-Cartesian orientations (deconstructionism, Lacan theory, and neo-gnoses).
Nachhaltigkeit dann miteinander vereinbar?
This is the case of a young woman suffering from a narcissistic personality disturbance with Oedipal aspects. The development of the analytic treatment is stressed through the analysis of her dreams. The analytic setting provided an appropriate mirroring Self-object. Thereby the patient has had the opportunity to express her own defective female grandiose Self, which was at the base of her disturbances.
This thesis is an intellectual history of dialecticism and its use in the works of the Frankfurt School members, Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse. Famously, these two men had a ferocious and polemical debate in the pages of Dissent Magazine in 1955-56. The Fromm-Marcuse Debate has since become almost the sole lens in which the intellectual differences and similarities between these men are analyzed. Through a comparative and historical analysis of their individual work, largely removed from the Dissent Debate, I offer a new interpretation of their conflict, their personal relationship, and a new perspective on critical theory and its relationship to political action. I argue that Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse's intellectual ideas are better juxtaposed through their interpretation of dialectics, rather than psychoanalysis, and that through this, they present us with starkly different prescriptions for individual and collective political engagement. Thus, both Fromm and Marcuse are outliers within the field of critical theory, and certainly within the Frankfurt School, even as their ideas remain in firm conflict with one another.
The concept of this qualification work is to look at the question of human nature. This subject is narrowed down to an assumption that the human nature is not a solid or given substance but rather a question that needs to be answered. This interpretation is then discussed from a point of view of three thinkers. Those are: Erich Fromm, Mircea Eliade and Carl Gustav Jung, chronologically in this order. Except the original presumption ideas of these men differ quite noticeably, or at least between the two main ones, who are Jung and Fromm. These differences are then presented throughout this work. Ideas of Mircea Eliade are used as a thematic bridge to fill the gap between the two at first seemingly incompatible islands Carl Gustav Jung and Erich Fromm. At the end, an attempt to find certain similarities between the main characters is submitted.
