Why does Mary hold her prominent place in Catholic theology to the extent that five specific dogmas have developed around her? psychoanalytic theory suggests dogma arises out of the psychic needs of people and psychic needs of people are expressed in dogma. The early views of Erich FROMM, a disciple of Freud, are presented to demonstrate that Marian dogma arose from the psychic needs of the people. The views of both Catholic and Protestant thinkers are presented, as well as theological and psychiatric views.
Erich FROMM's scientific method developed from an attempt to integrate Marxism and psychoanalysis. This approach evolved from the postulate that the human being, defined by the complex interaction of its biological, psychological, anthropological, and philosophical essences, is the center of society and scientific endeavor. Thus, the crisis of being could be resolved by social science with the help of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis deals with the constant parameters of human nature, while science formulates the best characteristics of the optimal human community. In formulating them, it is guided by anthropocentric, humanistic ethics, where man is the measure of all things. FROMM believes that, with some modifications, Sigmund Freud's theories could be of help in discovering the essence of human beings. With his theory of social transformation, on the other hand, Karl Marx offered a way to integrate human essence with existence. FROMM's specific contribution was to supply a credible theory of human nature, which Marx and social science have neglected.

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), characterized by disguises, secrecy, bigotry, and terror, came into power in the South after the Civil War. In some parts of the country the KKK, an extreme example of pathological group process, appears as strong and violent today as ever. FROMM (1941) noted that the basis of group psychology is the individual personality and defined social character as that part of the individual character structure that is common to most members of a group. The dynamics of the KKK may be better understood in terms of the individual psychodynamics of the group members. In the process of maturation, individuals need to progressively transfer to some matrix the feelings of support that they originally felt with their mothers. Because society as a whole is too vast and remote to meet this need, individuals seek additional support through group membership. The split-mother concept of Klein's (1975) Object Relations Theory can be projected into group life. Some individuals experience the maternal presence of society as split and have special requirements for group support. Under certain circumstances, pathological groups like the KKK may meet those requirements. In addition, the eruption of group violence of the KKK type may be explained by analyzing the psychodynamics of group regression to an infantile level and the accompanying arousal of the >unmanageable mother.<

Discusses the social aspects of psychotherapy and the history of humanistic psychotherapy based on the works of S. Freud, C. H. Cooley, E. FROMM, and T. Szasz. Psychotherapy cannot exist in a social vacuum, although its central function is to help the individual with personality problems. Social anthropology deals with the problems of different social classes, i.e., those social activities that are part of psychotherapy itself. This anthropological orientation needs to be integrated into the practice of psychotherapy.
