The article discusses some moral aspects of the conceptions of A. Maslow, C. Rogers, S. Jourard, R. May, and other representatives of humanistic psychology. The relations between human nature and >good< and >evil<, autonomy of mature morality, personal freedom and responsibility, conscience and guilt, moral determinants of interpersonal relations are the major problems under analysis. The author also presents some basic objections made against the moral formulations stated in humanistic psychology.
Tę pozostałość stanowią zdolność myślenia, wyobraźnia i samoświadomość, które to pomogły człowiekowi przekształcić całą otaczającą go przyrodę i zmienić siebie.
The topic of the present bachelor thesis is Erich Fromm and his specific concept of a human being and psychoanalysis. In his works, this famous psychologist was able to explain the position of a human being in the society, their needs and problems linked to their own existence. The introductory chapter summarizes fundamental facts about Fromm’s life and mentions several important personalities who influenced his thinking. The following chapters focus on the main issues of Fromm’s concept of a human being, especially their place in the environment, their relationship with the surrounding world, life philosophy and the issue of personal freedom. It deals in detail with the issues of love, aggression, freedom and the >To Be and to Have< life philosophy. Another issue this thesis deals with is Fromm’s approach to psychoanalysis and religion. The concluding chapter contains the fact about the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud and a comparison of the individual concepts of a human being as formulated by Freud and Fromm respectively.
The authoress of this article has attempted to read the play by an American playwright Eugene O’Neill in the light of the concept of love as proposed by Erich Fromm in 1956. This German philosopher argued that the only way to escape loneliness, a feeling to which everybody is doomed, is to unite oneself with another person in love. In a popular publication, titled >The Art of Loving<, Fromm describes various forms of love. >Desire Under the Elms< – a play written more than three decades before Fromm’s publication – seems to illustrate these philosophical considerations. Such a view on O’Neill’s work allows to notice its human dimension, and perceive its protagonists as an embodiment of the universal human condition.
[Conclusion] Niniejsza monografi a dowodzi, że inspirowana myślą Ericha Fromma teoria i praktyka edukacji może znaleźć w niej reprezentującą orientację emancypacyjną w krytycznej teorii edukacji spojną i wartościową wykładnię.
The article is an attempt to prove that cinema, becoming a kind of home of a mythical being – a vampire, clearly influences the change in the perception of its importance in culture. It was decided to explore the form and narrative of >The Hunger<, directed by Tony Scott and >Only Lovers Left Alive<, written by Jim Jarmusch, because both of these works are masterpieces of the romance of the vampire myth with the film medium, which are not particularly popular among researchers of the phenomenon. The research works of Roland Barthes, Vladimir Propp, Erich Fromm and Rollo May were used, as well as the concepts of successive processing of a mythical story were demonstrated.
The aim of this article was presentation the Fromm’s concept of person, person, who is involved to dichotomy of human subsistence. Person live, sometime it lived according to nature, there was part, however, in course of evolution, mental authorities have spread out at it. Person gaining consciousness, it has broken attachment of junction it with nature same. Fear has appeared and sense of alienation. Person has become free, but same very solitary. In purpose of killing existential solitude, person resorts to rate interpersonal. Correct, according to Fromm’s conception, rate is love, however the most often chosen rate is authoritarism, destruction and mechanical conformism. Dichotomies of person incline for choice among life or death, existence or property. Correct orientation, inherent restless being, is existence and life, other postures are secondary in accordance with they and if they are in balance, it lives according to nature person.
The conception of love in the Erich Fromm´s research tries to explain love from the point of view of his personality and through his work called The Art of Loving. The subject of this bachelor thesis is the Fromm´ s conception of the love compared to psychological and sociobiological explanations. Erich Fromm (1900-1980) received PhD in psychology from the University of Heidelberg in 1922. He worked with the Marx´s social concepts which he linked up with the psychological findings taken from Freud. The acquired knowledge was then applied to Fromm´s research of love. According to Fromm, love has many different images from the mother love, brother love, erotic love, self-love to the love to God. In the following chapters, the same analogical explanations of love are explained but from the sociobiological and psychological point of views. The sociobiology is science that supposes that the man was born to the world because his selfish genes wanted to. The only task the man has in his being is to pass on his genes to the next generation. Thus the categories of love are presented from this point of view. It is totally understandable that many people refuse the idea of just passing on the genes to the next generation as the only goal of their beings. The conception of love from the sociobiological point of view differs a lot from the Fromm´s understanding of love. However, the psychological views are shades into the Fromm´s views as it is influenced by his psychological education. Psychological conception of love describes the love according to the today´s psychologist views. There are three main views of love described in the bachelor thesis. It is not possible to decide if one is better than the other one. Psychology describes love as an emotional relationship which is characterized by the wide emotionality. On the contrary the sociobiology is science that lacks the emotions and its views is influenced by the evolution and biology. Although the impact of psychology is significant in Fromm´s works the sociology can also be identified. Each of the conceptions of love – Fromm´s, sociobiological or psychological prefers its own approach.
The aim of my paper is to introduce individual theories of aggression, which are divided according to the factors having influence on human aggressive behaviour and acting. Basically, the literature is chosen from the works of Erich Fromm, Sigmund Freud and Konrad Lorenz. This choice enabled to divide the issue into three basic areas, that is: biological, psychological and philosophical ones. All three areas are elaborated further by the issue of the child aggression origin, in subchapters. The impact of aggression on society is also emphasized by Hannah Arendt, who is trying to specify roots of social aggression, and is looking for individual and social responsibility for aggression. The theory, derived from those researches plus from subsequent modern psychological concept, attempts to reveal causes of aggression. Easier understanding of aggression causes would enable to influence or eliminate factors causing/strengthening aggression, either caused by society or by ourselves. Such understanding is the aim of all scientists, who sacrificed their lives to research of aggression, a phenomenon so dangerous for human beings.
The author presents the concept of man in the philosophy of Erich Fromm. The article consists of two parts. In the first part, the author presents how Fromm characterised the existential situation of man; in the second part he describes love as the main factor in the action and development of a human being. Man is part of nature, subjected to the rules of its laws, but he also transcends nature by the ability to use mind. A human subject is aware of his/her limitations and weaknesses with regard to nature. He/she feels lost and lonely in relation to other people and the natural world. Therefore, s/he looks for the frame of orientation and references. This search is the most important existential problem. Love is the solution to all problems of human existence. According to Fromm, man is the subject of love.
The article focuses on the analysis of chosen fragments of Erich Fromm concerning his utopia of a healthy society based on a specific cathegory of >be<. The presented problematics is built on widely understood socio-cultural conditions which had a great impact on philosopher’s works towards creation of the Utopian vision of the Better World, free from all sorts of totalitarian ideological extremism and paradoxes used in practice.
Henryka Gaertnera, zaś 2013 rok to czas obchodów setnej rocznicy istnienia szpitala symbolu L’Hôpital du Docteur Albert Schweitzer w gabońskim Lambaréné. Prof. Henryk Gaertner, wieloletni pracownik klinik Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie, członek wielu Towarzystw Naukowych polskich i zagranicznych, działacz społeczny i kulturowy jest jednocześnie jedynym Polakiem, któr y dostąpił zaszczytu zasadania w prezydium Association Internationale Schweitzer Lambaréné (AISL). Niesposób zamknąć w kilku zdaniach obszarów zainteresowań i działalności Profesora Henryka Gaertnera, aktywnego w sferach medycznej, psychosomatycznej, liter ackiej, historyczno medycznej, etyczno filozoficznej, kulturalnej, oświatowej czy społecznej.
Erich Fromm (1900 – 1980)
(2012)
Erich Fromm in his short book >The Art of Loving< presents love as an attitude and feeling that can be learned. Love in Fromm's terms is beyond the scope of interest sexologists, is an attitude combining the ability to learn a second, respect for him and concern for his welfare. Love is not a recipe for a happy sex life but the essence of the attitude in which it is a centre place for the most subtle and for healthy human development kind of relationship. There is no health without mental health and full of expression capabilities inherent in the unit without the feeling of love. It is an expression of the full development of personality.
Przedmowa [Preface]
(2012)
The bachelor´s thesis describes the philosophy of three important philosophers Erich Fromm, Victor Emanuel Frankl and Albert Camus. The work is divided into four chapters, in each of them I always deal with one specific problem from the point of view of all these philosophers. At the end of each chapter there is some conclusion and a summary of these thoughts as well as findings of similar characters of their philosophy. The first chapter is devoted to the problem of authentic way of the human existence. There are presented the basic features of Frankl´s, Fromm´s and Camus´ philosophy. The second chapter deals with the topic of freedom, primarily, whether the absolute freedom possible is or is not. The following chapter talks about the issue of human society and its impact on a human. The last chapter describes the problem of death and suicide. Whether these authors accept death as the end of the human life or whether they accept suicide as the solution of the human life. In conclusion, I tried to summarize the similar points of philosophy of these authors.
Filozofia Fromma pozwala dostrzec ograniczenia filozofii Foucaulta i odwrotnie.
Poslední kapitola představuje problém smrti a sebevraždy.
Fromm's approach to mental health is based on the neurophysiology principle that the brain has an innate tendency to preserve life. This principle implies a basic condition of psychic health: the concomitant of the process of life itself respect for life, that of others as one's own. According to Fromm, this universal criterion of mental health, inextricably linked to ethical issues, gives a satisfactory solution to the problem of human existence.
The article attempts to show relations between technology, economy, social life and education. In the first part author shows H. Marcuse’s conception of dependencies between technology, consumption, human needs and social consciousness. In the second part shows E. Fromm’s point of view on two ontological categories >to be< and >to have<. Special attention is paid to the possibility of using Marcuse’s and Fromm’s theories to analyze situation of man, his social consciousness and in this context – the role of the education in contemporary world.
Koncepcja religii w pismach Ericha Fromma [The Concept of Religion in the Writings of Erich Fromm]
(1994)
The main theme of my Bachelor thesis is the individualization process in the work of Erich Fromm. I focus on the individualization process as a growth of human freedom and individual identity. The aim of this work is to show how the social, economic and religious changes of human society reflect the progress of the individualization process. I try to explain the connections between the progress of the individualization and human relationship to the nature, authority, means of production, religion social and economic structures. I especially focus on the connection between the individualization process and the origin of the capitalist market and Protestantism and its social, economic, political and religious effects on the society structure. I compare the theories of Erich Fromm and Max Weber to show that they share differences and similarities in their viewpoint on the origin and effects and efforts of the capitalist marketplace society and the protestant ethic. I also mention Fromm’s critical viewpoint which says that capitalist society causes conformity, which is contradiction to individuality.
By pokazac te procesy, przywoluje myślicieli i myślicielki takie jak Michel Foucault, Erich Fromm, Theodor Adorno, Wilhelm Reich i Karen Horney. Analizuje kondycje edukacji seksualnej i ruchow antydyskryminacyjnych w Polsce w czasie teraźniejszym.
The aim of these deliberations is primarily to show the relations between creativity and peace. In my opinion, these pedagogic issues are very important, especially because they challenge the commonly held views that an ordinary man in the street cannot have any influence on the issues of war and peace. In accordance with the concepts presented in the text (Montessori, Rowid), each person should be aware of their individual causative power in the creation of peaceful order in the surrounding world. The development of proper attitudes and instilling in a human the sense of responsibility in this regard are among the most significant educational tasks.

The main reason which cause the Doctor of Lambaréné to take this activity, was to draw the attention of world public opinion on the negative effects of nuclear test-explosions. However, during the exploration of issues (in which he was supported by eminent specialists in the field of nuclear physics, with Albert Einstein headed), Schweitzer discovered a much more serious danger threatening all of humanity. The aim of this paper is to portray the influences of cultural processes on the professional and family life of the modern, Western societies. The text contains the review of the literature on the subject depicting the symptoms of reconciling career with family life. With reference to the analyses conducted by Erich Fromm and Theodore Brameld, a diagnosis of social conditions contributing to disorders of the work – family life balance is put forward. The summary embraces number of conclusions that should be addressed to the overall sphere of education. Consequently, the purpose of the teachers’ work should not exclusively concern relaying specialist knowledge to pupils whom which they teach, nor preparing young people to the work, as the key task is rather to >teach human beings how to be a man, how to reach the level of a complete, coherent personality at peace with others<. Thus, in order to support a well-balanced functioning of the society, education must have an effective influence on the process of establishing standards of the >art of being< in world of the daily life.
Dr. Pankiewicz’s paper focuses on the depiction of Erich Fromm’s character and views. The subject of the author's analysis is the work of Fromm entitled >War in Man< (the author is the initiator of the Polish edition of this book). The paper raises both the issues of the presented book, as well as Fromm's views, which can be found in reading the paper. Dr. Pankiewicz points out that >War in Man< is a very important voice of warning against nuclear threat, while pointing to the paradoxical fact that the main source of danger to humanity is currently man himself - that the element of self-destruction lies within us. The author introduces to the reader the universal issues of life and death, so characteristic for Fromm's thought, citing pessimistic thoughts about the dimensions of human destructiveness. And although (as stated by the author himself) the take on the paper's issues is not optimistic, the guide and popularization of Fromm's reflections on the global nuclear threat is nowadays one of the most current issues. The text help us to better understand what was happening and is still happening before our eyes: It approximates the structure of modern man’s nature and the problems of interdependence of social and psychological factors, explains the essence of human aggressive behaviour, indicating the sources of these behav-iours.
The aim of this work is to interpret – by means of the postcolonial strategy of reading – a short story titled Mimesis, published in Paweł Huelle’s collection: Opowieści chłodnego morza. This kind of interpretation reveals a choice of new perspectives, aiming at the healing of trauma by explaining the symptoms and revealing hidden facts. In Mimesis by Huelle, this happens due to the character’s narration. The author of the article presents a process of the characters identity creation during their encounters with different cultures (Huelle exemplifies a multicultural mosaic in his short story). All the way through the imagery of the characters, the author of the article enhances the main axiological features and describes the process of identity creation, thus an act of liberating oneself from restrictions of one’s own culture.
The article raises the subject of female motive in Stanisław Grochowiak’s poetry. Female element in the work of the representative of 56 generation is marked positively – in contrast to masculine one. The poet’s high evaluating of woman is closely connected with the war escalation in 20th century. According to Grochowiak, it proclaims that civilization based on patriarchal system suffered its defeat. The only hope for humanity resurgence is just related to a woman. The author says that she is the host of such values as love and wisdom – and her fertility and protectiveness are opposite to the death. The crisis of European civilization caused by two world wars has its overtone in philosophic idea of Erich Fromm. He abstracted two tendencies in human’s behavior: biophilic – directed at life and necrophilic – aimed at death. Fromm similarly to Grochowiak found the reason for the twentieth-century hecatomb in human nature, in this what is typical of man and patriarchal society. Both Grochowiak’s and Fromm’s diagnoses are parallel but at the same time independent, that is why we can say that they are complementary to each other in seeking the explanation for traumatic war events and the hope for human’s future.
The work is a critical analysis of writings of theoreticians dealing with alienation theory from the late eighteenth to the twentieth century. While in Karl Marx’s theory the focus is on alienation of a man from the product of his work and work itself, other forms of the concept play an important role in fields like history, sociology, philosophy and psychology. Before Marx, the idea appeared in the writings of Rousseau, where it was understood as a result of human distance from nature. Hegel interpreted it as a sort of alienated reality that only man can assimilate. Feuerbach, on the other hand, believed that man alienates from a part of himself by creating the idea of God. Fromm and the Frankfurt School drew from Marx’s writings, but for them the alienation was more about the mental sphere and it meant the alienation of the man from himself.
The aim of the article is the comparison of the conception of relation between the attitude to self and sense of happiness in humanistic ethics of Erich Fromm and Mieczyslaw Gogacz. The text indicates differences occurring between them, as well as similarities, however the latter ones seem to be particularly interesting, as the conceptions of mentioned philosophers derive from totally different philosophical traditions. Analyses of Fromm and Gogacz show that attitude of human being to themselves signify cantly influences not only their sense of happiness, but also their way of life and relation with other people.
Goethe wrote: >Mankind walks steadily forward, but the person remains the same<. Customs as a normative tradition ways of behavior are the important social community and have the power to unwritten laws. Are primarily transmitted orally or by imitation, once established are very slow to change. The article discusses the problem of looking at the reality of the two opposite poles.
The aim of this thesis is to present the Erich Fromm's psychoanalytic concept and determine the influence of his ideas in the contemporary society. Erich Pinchas Fromm was dealing with the psychology all his life. He was trying to use psychology as a tool of the development of the human mind and not only its scientific description. In his works, Fromm emphasizes a destructive and almost pathological influence of a modern company on human individuality, necessity of self-awareness and self-intrinsic value. The centre of his psychoanalytic analysis is a human being. Fromm tries, through detailed analysis, to show the negative side of the current civilization and also attempts to outline new opportunities of change. He criticizes the prevailing orientation on modus of ownership when a man blindly chases the power, wealth and popularity. The man pays a big toll for his egoistic avarice in the form of anxiety, fear and feeling of helplessness. Fromm in detail focuses on the aspects of human personality, such as love, freedom and human naturalness in his works. The essence of Fromm's psychoanalysis is the need to arouse people to change the current state of society, which Fromm considers essentially tragic. All the Erich Fromm's work is focused on a resurgence of human society and creation of ideal of a new man. Fromm was persuaded that the revival of society is possible and necessary. The key of this revival is primarily the change of individual mind. Fromm sees hope particularly in the self-reflection of the individual, who is able to free himself from illusions of his being and in the development unrepeatable uniqueness of real human being. The main contribution of Fromm's humanistic social psychology is to help a >sick< human being to restore inner moral values, which leads to an active and meaningful life.
The collapse of authorities in society has been accompanied by the disappearance of the >master-student< relation, so significant for the development of young scientists. This paper presents the reasons behind this situation as well as its consequences. The discussion of the causes is based on Erich. Fromm’s theory of authority. The result of the conducted analysis is as follows: excessive institutionalization of how scientific research is carried out does not allow real scientific authorities to function effectively at universities – they are replaced with impersonal authority which scientific institution is.
The article aims to demonstrate the naturalistic tendencies of Erich Fromm’s research that are apparent in his interpretations of the fragments of the Old Testament relating to the Sabbath and describing the fall of Adam and Eve. Erich Fromm finds a natural ally for his naturalistic tendencies in Zen Buddhism. In Fromm’s thought both naturalism and Zen Buddhism interpreted naturalistically join with Jacob Bachofen’s theory of matriarchate.
This dissertation tries to prove that the so-called philosopher on the throne can be a better ruler not only than dictator but also than contemporary liberal democratic politician. Since the sixth century BC, when the human undertook a systematic and critical contemplation upon surrounding reality, she/he has begun to dream about political rulers to be guided in their doings by the imperative of reason. In principal, the higher level of spiritual culture characterized the rulers, the more likely their subjects were to live to a great age in relative peace. That is why for centuries it has been dreamed of a political system that is something like a kind of a sophocracy. The most complete picture of such a sovereign, which fulfilled dreams about a sage in the crown, was outlined by Plato in his State. In his point of view, as long as the lovers of wisdom will not have royal power in the states, or the rulers will not begin to love wisdom honestly, there is no help for states and for the human race. Nevertheless, over the centuries, authority was enforced mainly by physical strength and not by reason. It was not until the twentieth century that democracy brought freedom and equality of rights, thanks to which political power became more rational. Unfortunately, also contemporary liberal democracy is not free from fundamental contradictions that can bring about its collapse. The main contradiction is the increasingly smaller influence of citizens – who in the theory of democracy are the only legal sovereign – on political decision-making. This is accompanied by the enhancing influence of entities with no democratic legitimacy, e.g. global corporations that do not care about the common (public) good, but only about their own. These entities use the growing intellectual and ethical weakness of democratic politicians whose purpose is their own particular interest and not the happiness (good) of their citizens. This may indicate a slow system disintegration. For this reason liberal democracy needs politicians who are wise enough to realize this threat. Of all the people in the history of the world who led political communities, to the Platonic ideal in the highest degree (among others, like T. G. Masaryk and Á. Göncz) got closer the man who, paradoxically, never wanted to be a ruler. Václav Havel's thought is a critique of both Soviet post-totalitarianism and Western democracy. In his opinion both systems, though to a different degree, alienate a human trying to reduce her/him to the role of a machine's cog. Havel proposes that every citizen take individual and global responsibility for herself/himself and the whole world, because only in this way she/he can consciously exert real influence over political decisions. What is more, this is the only way to build a politics that aims – if possible – the happiness of every person. Havel realizes that in today's world this attitude is extremely impractical and very difficult to apply in everyday life. Nevertheless, he knows no better possibility.
This bachelor thesis deals with conception of various human aspects according to Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse. These aspects are freedom, society and human. In introduction is shortly introduced the Frankfurt school, both authors were its members and this school form them. There is mentioned freedom and her economic, religious and anthropological development in culture. Below is here shown directly evolution of human. Fromm and Marcuse go from Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx. In one chapter Fromm shows us an evolution of human character and Marcuse analyses evolution of Ego, which has to fight with Id and Superego. Chapter about society more deal with capitalism and there authors go from aforementioned Karl Marx. Fromm presents his conception of mood to have and mood to be. Marcuse shows us a technical progress in industrial society. In conclusion will be compared theory of both philosophers and it will be examined their usability at the present time.
Starting with Erich Fromm’s thesis on love from his seminal work >The Art of Loving< (1956), the paper tries to show the way in which Fromm’s psycho-biological concept of love is represented differently in different historical formations in Andrić’s historical novel >Na Drini ćuprija< [>The Bridge on the Drina<] (1945). A brief analysis of the three love relations from Andrić's novel reveals the process of the appearance of the concept of modern love, the moment in which love ceases to be a social instance and becomes an individual act.
The article constitutes a short analysis of the contemporary man who has to deal with widely understood changes, which is often the cause of adaptation difficulties and at the same time is the chance of personality development and gaining many personal benefits. A suggestion reinforcing mental hardness and increasing the chances to satisfactorily deal with different difficult situations is creativity regarded as the process of self‑creation. The text presents a short story of creation, as well as a description of the construct of hardness. Also, mutual permeation of a humanist approach to creativity and the concept of hardness which, seen as a certain part, create a model of personality and suggestion of the way to function in a globalized world for the contemporary man who, being >on the way< and still >becoming<, makes a constant transgression and at the same time, positively answers the requirements of its environment.
The paper is an attempt to look at the issues of respect for law from the standpoint of Erich Fromm’s philosophical anthropology. In the text I claim that Fromm’s philosophy provides plausible frameworks for interpretation of the results of empirical research on the prestige of law, conducted once by the most famous Polish legal sociologist – Adam Podgórecki. In particular Podgórecki’s thesis about relations between the mode of obeying the law and the personality of a man, as well as his thesis about the existence of two fundamental ways of respecting the law perfectly match the philosophy of the author of Escape from Freedom.
The aim of this work is to examine and explain the concept of humanistic ethics defined by Erich Fromm. Special focus is given to biological premises about human beings and Fromm's inquiry about the existence of nature of men. The important role of human conscience and its function is shown in contrast to the problem of free will. The core that holds Fromm's ethics together is his characterology. In this regard, this thesis covers the difference between individual and social character, which are introduced together with a conditions that enable the growth of biophilia, contrary to the necrophilia and destructivity. Necrophilia and destructivity have the same core, from where they arise. The process of individualization is explained by Fromm's regular standard way of explanation. Individualization is originating on an individual level, which means, that every human as a child goes through this process. Therefore, by the same token, the process is taken to a social scale from it's individual appearance and Fromm draws common ground between these two levels of development. Escape mechanisms derive from the anxious and uncertain humans, who, searching for some assurance develop the tendencies to escape their feelings through the authoritarianism, which can either take form of sadism, masochism or conformism. In the last chapter the Fromm position on free will is discussed and explained with the understanding, that the standpoint which constitutes Erich Fromm's alternativism is hope, not only for a new order but for a complete state of harmony. The compact picture of Erich Fromm's humanistic ethics will be achieved through the interpretation of some of the most important concepts in his main writings.
Bachelor thesis interprets Erich Fromm’s view of man. A human being is determined by his nature. He has obtained and also inherited attributes. Everybody has his own character which is continuously formed by society which a human being lives in. Love is very important for a human. But it is hard to learn it, as we can see in present-day society and also in Fromm’s society at that time. This thesis also deals with Fromm’s differentiation of two modes of human being – mode to have, mode to be. Next chapter deals with destructiveness, as the opposite of love. Human is a creature who likes killing and enjoys his aggression. The freedom is also the main conception of Fromm’s thoughts. It causes a man´s powerlessness and fear. When a human being doesn’t have freedom then he feels relief and inner order. The last chapter deals with the suggestion of new society and new man by Erich Fromm. All is based on the mode to be which means a productive life.
Freedom, responsibility and safety are categories which penetrate each other. However, in the specialist literature they are more often examined separately. Freedom and security are fundamental values, which are followed by specific needs and aspirations of individuals and groups. They should be treated as specific desiderata of human existence. Complementarity of the analyzed concepts is indisputable, however, responsibility and safety are >secondary< to freedom. On the threshold of the era of hyper globalization only drawing the line clearly – which I will try to propose – at individual freedom and public safety gives a chance to ensure multidimensional welfare of societies. Fromm is of the opinion that contemporary humans marginalize themselves in relation to nature or in confrontation with their surroundings. Human beings have become reified and their potential has been changed into resources, which should be treated as assets and aimed at gaining the highest profits. International relations are brought to the role of alienated beings, and each one of them reaches the feeling of safety only by integrating with the community. As I have proven, maintaining social ties guarantees the sense of safety and, thereby gives the possibility to use one’s potential freely.
The paper present the method of measurement of the attitudes of >to be< and >to have<. They are interpreted in philosophical (in existentialism and personalism), psychological and sociological literature either as contradistinctive attitudes or as different hierarchies of values. In the paper >o be< and >to have< are taken to mean attitudes. The attitude >o be< is such a relation to the world which is characterized by a total openness. It has been assumed that the attitudes >to be< and >to have< make the extreme ends of one continuum. On the basis of the theoretical definitions of the attitudes >to be< and >to have< the Scale of >to be< and >to have< Attitudes (SPBiM) has been construed. It is a scale of Likert type made up of 29 statements (one buffer statement, four experimental statements). Additionally, for the sake of a deeper psychological characteristics, Semantic Differential, Value Understanding Test and Value Preference Test have been construed. The array of the above methods has been used in research concerning the sample of 262 persons (131 women, 131 men) who live in large cities. On the basis of the findings obtained in SPBiM (with regard to quartile deviation) a group of 50 persons has been distinguished with the highest intensity of the attitude >to be< (group B), persons with >mediate< (group M-B) and a 50-person group >to have< (group M). Thus distinguished groups B and M differ as to their connotative meanings assigned to 6 aspects of the overall reality understood here as the object of the attitudes >to be< and >to have< (the Universe, nature, temporality, suffering, other people, one's own person). The persons which adopted the >to have< attitude perceive reality as being more >negative<, whereas persons oriented towards >to be< see it in a more >positive< manner. The persons with the >to be< and >to have< attitudes differ as to their understanding of values and their preference. >Perfecting oneself< takes a particular place in the preference of values. The attitudes of >to be< and >to have< are psychologically significant and their measurement is plausible. In the light of the above findings it seems that it is necessary to conduct further empirical research of the >to be< and >to have< attitudes, as well as of ties with other psychological variables.
Fromm nazywa je syndromem >wzrostu< i syndromem >rozpadu< przypisujac im zasadnicze znaczenie w rozwoju człowieka.
