Ethical Choice and Personality Development in Joyce Carol Oates’s >My Sister, My Love< [欧茨《我的妹妹,我的爱》的伦理选择与人格成长] [application of Fromm's theories to art]

  • [Chinese abstract not available] This essay analyzes Oates’s novel >My Sister, My Love< from the perspective of Erich Fromm’s humanistic ethics, with the hope to demonstrate the protagonist Skyler’s ethical choice and its significance to his personality development. The alienation of the relationship among family members, the family tragedy which leads to Skyler’s psychiatric disorders and inhibits his life potentials and personality, and the sudden revelation of the truth ten years later, drive Skyler into the depth of despair and loneliness, while at same time offers him an opportunity of personality re-development. The final choice he makes under the guidance of his conscience and rationality symbolizes the development of his productive personality. His love and faith in humanity leads to his spiritual salvation and positive free existence.
