The Publication of Fromm's Book >Escape from Freedom< and Its Significance [

  • In 1941, Fromm's first book-length work, >Escape from Freedom<, was published. In this book, which was about the fear of freedom, Fromm, who was the founder of social psychology and a psychoanalyst, presented his social psychoanalytic approach to the public for the first time. In its terms, the book can be seen as a landmark in Fromm's efforts to realize his personal freedom after breaking away from Freud's theory of Libido and breaking with the Frankfurt School. In today's perspective, the issue of individual autonomy and the theory of the self raised by Fromm are still important for how we view the development of individuality in the postmodern context where the boundaries of the self are gradually dissolving.
