The Writer as Migrant: Reading Ha Jin’s Novels as Metahistorical Fiction [我以我心荐轩辕:解读哈金小说的元历史性] English Language and Literature, Shantou University, Shantou, Guangdong, China 2010 [application of Fromm's theories to art].

第三章意在运用R.D Laing的《The Divided Self: An Existential Study of Sanity and Madness》和Erich Fromm的《The Sane Society》分析小说《疯狂》中借>癫狂者<之口叙述历史。
  • This thesis aims to explore the historical complex of writer Ha Jin and the historical narrative about contemporary China in his more than ten works. The theme of my thesis is: Interpretation of Ha Jin's works as Metahistorical Fiction; the difference between historicographic metafiction and Linda Hutcheon's interpretation of postmodern novels. Due to space limitations, the author mainly selected Ha Jin's three novels, >War of Waste,< and >Waiting< and >Crazy< for three chapters. The reason is that the three novels are representative works of the author, and the historical background of the narratives of the three novels can basically constitute the change of the history of the entire contemporary China. The identity of the >spokesperson<endowed by Ha Jin and the persistent controversy caused by this identity is the starting point for me to think about the legitimacy of his historical narrative and the entry point of thesis writing. Ha Jin's interpretation of the English writing tradition of immigrant writers opened by Conrad and Nabokov and Hayden White's Metahistory theory is the theoretical reference for the paper. Each chapter has its own relative independence in analyzing the narrative features and specific theoretical applications of each novel.– The first chapter uses E.L. Doctorow's theory on the authenticity of fiction and history to explain the >False Document< to analyze the historical memory of Chinese prisoners of war during the War of Resistance against US Aggression and Aid in the novel >War of Waste<.– The second chapter mainly analyzes the intertextual juxtaposition of love stories and historical narratives in the novel >Waiting< to explore the relationship between personal pursuit and historical background.– The third chapter intends to use R.D Laing's >The Divided Self: An Existential Study of Sanity and Madness< and Erich Fromm's >The Sane Society< analysis novel >Crazy< to recite history through the mouth of >mad person<. In the process of the transformation of his writing theme, Ha Jin denies his pre->spokesperson< identity.– In the postscript, the author also discussed the contradiction of this theme and the political identity (The Politics of Identity) that Harkin began to explore. He believed that he expected to break away from his controversial >spokesperson< role and become a Chinese American writer. As White's analysis summarizes the various historical cognitions and writing styles of Western Historiography and Philosophy of History, the significance of the paper is that by analyzing Ha Jin's Chinese experience as a material. The novel explores its objective intention of describing history and proposes the possibility of writing another history in an objective, inclusive and pluralistic manner. [Automatic translation]
