The reconstruction of early nonverbal relatedness in the treatment of difficult patients a special form of empathy

  • This essay elaborates the notion of chemistry between people and how we understand it psychoanalytically. The author puts forth the idea that certain experiences are lost or diluted when put into words, yet seem to come to life through aesthetic media that do not rely on words (art, music, poetry). Although psychoanalysts are often tied to interpretation in the belief that signifying experience helps to process it, patients not only seek understanding but also have a need to be known and appreciated experientially. Perhaps that is why they often privilege some experiences as magical or chemical and are reluctant to deconstruct them in treatment.
