A Study on Translation of the Words in Sanqu of the Yuan Dynasty from the Perspective of Philosophy [哲学视野下的元散曲词汇英译研究], Master thesis, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China 2013.

  • The words in sanqu kept a good record of the unique social life in the Yuan Dynasty , and also reflected the spirit of the time. The words have humorous and refined attributes, and the combination of the two elements formed a peculiar and popular style of sanqu. As cross-cultural communication, the translation of sanqu should be implemented on the basis of the style. This paper regards the >300 Yuan Songs< translated by Xu Yuanzhong as the chief source, and compares it with other sanqu translation achieve-ments by eight translators domestic and overseas. 38 Yuan sanqu words are selected in the thesis, on the basis of the difficulty in translation, the thesis divides the words into systematic classifications and analyzes them one by one, lastly, the preliminary translation strategy is put forward in each section. In the process of solving difficult points in sanqu translation, the author is inspired by the three philosophical traditions, and accordingly, the thesis is divided into three chapters. - G252This thesis holds that translation is the process of the rendition of the meaning, which is influenced by many factors. Combining Gadamer’s concept about >fusion of horizons<, the first chapter discusses the translation of the common nouns, literary image and popular slangs, and then points out that, for the kind of words which have corresponding words in bilingual systems, the translator should try to make his horizon close to the author’s initial horizon, so as to realize the ideal fusion of horizons.– Inspired by the theory of the deconstruction, the author talks about the translation of fuzzy and different words in the second chapter. Fuzzy and different words are here reduplicated words, metaphor rhetoric, and ancient and modern homonyms. In general, the instructive role that deconstruction played in translation practice is suspected, but this thesis argues that, for the translation of the above three highly fuzzy and different words, the theory of deconstruction can help the translator render the words, the translator is encouraged to develop his full subjectivity and creativity, the voice different from the author’s voice should also be allowed in the translation, so as to realize the >symbiosis< between the translated text and the original text.– Developing from Fromm’s concept of >social filter<, the third chapter traces the translation of proper nouns, gap words in the target language and the nonequivalent words. It pointed out that, for the translation of the words which have some conflicts in bilingual systems, the translator should break through the >social filter< set by his native language, so as to finish the original translation. And only with this kind of translation, can the readers remove the >social filter< in the text, and then understand the racy sanqu. - The author hopes that, according to the three major traditions of the philosophy, the characteristics and differences of sanqu’s language can be reflected, and thus, make the experts and scholars aware of the construction of the translation of the words from sanqu in the Yuan dynasty from the perspective of philosophy.
