- The main purpose of this paper is to describe Sigmund Freud's theory of the social group communication which embodies in his psychological view. According to the psychological perspective of Freud, especially the group psychological view, this paper discusses the viewpoint of Communication Studies. The article mainly studies Freud's group communication thoughts, analyzes the scholars of communication study who are influenced by the thoughts and consequently affirmed the importance of Freud's thoughts in the history of communication studies. Main thesis of the paper is performed below. Freud proposes that communication activities are man's instinctive behavior, as well as the process of group identity and mutual imitation of group individuals. This statement is also the major standpoint of Freud's group communication thoughts. The whole paper is composed of preface and body text. Freud's major theoretical system is introduced in the preface. As a psychological doctor who ever made great contributions to communication studies, he has been paid more attention and studied in academic circle. But there exists vacancy in the research on his group communication thoughts compared to great recognition degree of Freud's other theory. In addition, this part indicates that group communication defined by Freud is actually a generalized definition, which is different from the narrow definition in communication studies. Main text is divided into three parts. The first part describes Freud's communication thoughts which extracted from his psychological view and clearly stated that the formation source of Freud's group communication thoughts by the study of group psychology. The thoughts is in compliance with the psychoanalytic system which is the foundation of Freudian Psychology. On the basis of >Liebe> instinct, Freud emphasizes the mutual influence of group individuals. The definition of psychological conceptions such as group individuals connection, group libido, instinct of gregariousness and authority of group leader provides theoretical basis of group communication. The viewpoints of Freudian Psychology collect Gustav Le Bon's group psychology and Gabriel Tarde's Imitation theory. By discussing the view of Freud's group psychology, the core theory of group communication can be induced that – group communication is man's instinctive behavior.– In the second chapter, further investigation of Freud's group communication view is carried out. Firstly, group communication basing on self-analysis. Self communication is a transmission process between ego and ego ideal, as well as a course of seeking proper balance between ideal, ego and ego ideal for human's instinct libido. Secondly, group communication originated in hint is affected and controlled by unconsciousness. Mutual suggestion and influence is just a kind of communication behavior between group individuals, and imitation between them is a channel of group communication. Finally, group leader is considered as a group ideal as well as a concrete manifestation of group individuals' ego ideal. Group communication is described as the process of seeking dependence for ego ideal by group individuals. In other words, identification and shift of love with group leader by group individuals can be seen as the communication activities between group individuals and leaders.– Influence of Freud's group communication thoughts is analyzed in chapter three. Freud is not a communication scholar, but his communication thoughts have a great impact on later generations, especially on the formation of Erich Fromm, George Herbert Mead, Charles Horton Cooley and Herbert Marcuse's communication views, who more or less inherited and developed Freud's group communication thoughts. Among them, Erich Fromm is the scholar who is the most greatly affected by Freud's thoughts. His communication thoughts system combines the theory of Freud and Marx, of which emphatically inherited Freud's thoughts on individuals in group communication activities, which consider that individual communication activities in groups are group behavior of living alone. Moreover, through further research on Freud's theory, Fromm sublimes his theory that he emphasizes the significant influence of function of social culture on group communication. Mead and Cooley, as representative figures of >Chicago School<, their views of communication are also affected by Freud's group communication thoughts. The concept of >the generalized other<, which proposed by Mead is actually the objectification and embodiment of identifications between group individuals in Freud's group communication theory. Similarly, Cooley's concept of >the looking-glass self< shows ego ideal which molded by individuals in course of group communication.– Marcuse is a Neo-Freudianism scholar as well as the key man in >Frankfurt School<. He inherited the viewpoint that group communication is man's instinctive behavior which states in Freud's group communication theory. On this basis, he reconstructs Freud's theory and makes it reach a new level. Marcuse's theory points out the direction for the theoretical construction of the whole >Frankfurt School<. Judging from this aspect, Freud's communication thoughts have played a very important role in Frankfurt School. According to further discussion of Freud's group communication thoughts in this paper, we summarize Freud's social communication thoughts and indicate his significant contribution to the communication scholars who are affected by him, and even to the whole communication academic circle.
